I love Coldplay's sonics, Mike - but I find their lyrics embarrassingly bad for the most part. The first time I heard "Til Kingdom Come" I knew exactly what they were going to say before they said it, always a sign of cliche-filled mediocrity. And then there's my "worst lyric of the year award" for their line in "Swallowed By The Sea": "I could write a song...a hundred miles long" - WTF? That's just plain stupid. Like I say, the only reason I'm familiar with their lyrics is that I listened to X&Y - a lot. I haven't seen them live but have only read great things about their performances. And while it's great 'roll down your window and cruise' music it's not anything that causes me any lyrical introspection. Then again, Joni will spoil you for that, no? As for America, I was a big fan - their first three records are quite the Hat Trick (including the one by that title) but they jumped the shark after that and I haven't heard anything to change my mind. I'm writing to you from my FEMA trailer on my brother's property in Abita Springs, LA (about an hour north of N.O.) I applied for about mid October. I'm one of the fortunate ones and I count my blessings everyday. So many others are still waiting for a trailer while the city officials argue about where to put them. I'm quite settled into mine. My brother just got me connected to his high speed internet and cable TV service. So I no longer have to take my laptop into his house to check email, and can once again see EWTN (which I had not seen since before Katrina.) We hope 2006 will be a kinder year, but the road to recovery is a long and difficult one. If you're wondering if things are getting back to normal here in N.O., the answer in a word is: no. Things are coming along nicely in the French Quarter and uptown (neither of which flooded,) but the 80% of the city that did flood looks basically the same way it looked 4 months ago right after Katrina. Some homes have been gutted, but many others stand as is, some even still stand in the middle of streets! I go St. Bernard civil parish where I used to live every Sunday for Mass, so I cross the city weekly and see the lack of progress. Volunteers removed the pews and pressure washed the interior of our church. We had Mass in the school yard from mid-October until we moved inside the first Sunday of Advent. It was an emotional day for all. It's a long drive, but that church has been my spiritual home my entire life, and I've been part of the music ministry since 1972! I'm doing well financially now since I've been working full-time with Buy Owner, but still waiting for the flood insurance payoff for my destroyed home. They say the checks in the works, but I haven't seen it yet. I need that money for a down payment on a new home, but my trailer is comfortable. I go treasure hunting at my house each Sunday after Mass, but have just about gone through everything now. There's not much left to salvage, although I have taken a good bit, even some clothing, believe it or not. It's starting to hit now that it is almost over and will soon be demolished. I've been working so much and so hard, and spending what little free time I have cleaning my treasures, that I am so tired all the time. I fall asleep when I try to read anything. Life for the past 4 months has been so crazy. I was such a disciplined person before Katrina and everything has been so jumbled since. I've got to start pulling things back together and try to get things back to as normal as possible. I having a hard time just getting used to temps 5 to 10 degrees lower on the north side of the lake than I'm accustomed to on the south side in New Orelans. If you want to know what you can do for us, pray for us, we need it, and come visit New Orleans. This is a tourist city and we need the visitors to come and spend money in our hotels and restaurants. Many of the tourist attractions are fine as they are mostly in areas that were not flooded, nor significantly damaged. What he did know was that Fuzzy was resentful to the end of his life that Joni had come to his home with Allan Ginsberg (someone will have to explain to me why that would bother him) and that she'd made money off this song and not given him any (and I don't know why she should give him money for a song she wrote, either, even if it's about him). I'm traveling just outside Lauren Canyon shortly, and I was thinking about driving through it, as I've never been there before. I was wondering if you know whether Joni's old house (where she lived with Graham Nash) is still there. I thought it would be awesome to see it with the knowledge that she wrote so many incredible songs in it. Please let me know if you have any information on it, if it's still there, and where on Lookout Mountain Rd. it would be if so. Please forward to anyone that may be able to answer. Ha! I think you've changed the song forever for me! Regarding Furry's implied dislike of Allan Ginsberg, Ginsberg was a homosexual, a Buddhist, and a Jew. I know absolutely nothing about Furry, but if he was anything like Pat Robertson, those three things would be enough to send anyone of that ilk over the edge into non-Jesus-like words and deeds. Also, I can sorta understand Furry's resentment at being visited by a coked-up limoload of "beautiful people," one of whom eventually wrote an unflattering song that mentioned his false teeth and leg. The song has always made me a little uncomfortable in that Furry seems to be treated a bit like a sideshow curiosity. Maybe Joni is totally innocent of any 'wrongdoing' -- whatever that means -- but hers is a perspective Bonnie Raitt (for one) never would have taken, and this is a song Bonnie never would have written. - --Smurf __________________________________________ Yahoo! Just as I was sitting down to write to you, about 20 minutes ago, my Mom called to tell me that my brother just brought my Dad to the ER, again. Trouble with his legs this time. I love my Dad so much. He taught me the deeeeper meaning. Is your Dad close by? I know it is heartbreaking to see your father helpless and hurting in a hospital bed....the once vibrant and strong and loving father struggling.... My heart goes out to you, and my prayers are with you and your Dad....and my Dad, and *especially* Donna in Texas and her Dad. It doesn't actually PAY, but you can get into situations that are far beyond my control. I only pray that no one was hurt on this night of living legends in SF. Also thankful that my booy Jeff got to the airport safely courtesy of the author of the original posting. Love Paz (now that we are name droping it was a very interesting weekend for me starting with a gig with Your All Holiness Bartholomew I ( the equivalant of the Pope to the Greek Orthodox Church) to a gig at the Ogden Museum with my udder boy Clint Maedgen (from Bingo and Liquidrone fame also a member of Preservation Hall Jazz Band who played Macy's Christmas Parade and the White House lately) and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band last night at the "O" for the famed "Art's Alive" fest. To a panel discussion at the "o" today with a panel of architects and designers and professors discussing the rebuilding of the city. It will all come to a head on Weds about 1pm when the first draft of the committee is delivered to the people and the press. Chek out nola.com for the gory details on Weds at about 1pm.)))))) P.S. I love me some Bonnie P.S.S. Jackson's music is ok but I am not a big fan. P.S.S.S. Carlos was a major dick the time that I had a chance to work with him. I guess I did not blow the proper amount of smoke up his ass. Next time instead of a shotgun I will offer the aforementioned smoke treatment or a free colonic cleansing.
