I wish you all a healthy and happy (and hopefully more peaceful) new year. Been lurking most of last year, slipping out of touch for weeks at a time. My last look was on 12/6, so I am now 4 weeks behind. Seems I have paid the appropriate price, not learning about the Carnegie Hall concert until today. (Was able to pick up a couple of decent tickets anyway, but not VIP tickets.). Now I will have to read all the back digests, to find out what the deal is. Am I inferring correctly that Joni may be coming to this ? If so, would she be part of the pre-show reception ? Why, oh why must people change Joni's lyrics for lesser ones? "You taste so bitter, bittersweet." (HURL!) I'll bet ol' Lauren thought she was quite clever with that change, but it sucks, and it ruins, for me, an otherwise decent cover. This reminds me of another cover that is compromised, for me, not by changing the lyrics, but by mucking around with Joni's character's pronunciation of a word; in this case, the word 'Hiroshima'. Holly Near and Cris WIlliamson do a great, great cover of "The Tealeaf Prophecy," but then one or both of them must have said, "Oh, lookie, Joni says 'HiroSHEma' instead of 'HiROshima'. Let's fix it." Totally bush league, in my opinion, because Joni's presumedly American character from the '60s or '70s (watching 'The Johnny Carson Show', rather that "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson', etc.) most likely would not have pronounced the Japanese word correctly; she would have pronounced it the same way everyone else did at the time: HiroSHEma. With her superior artistic sensitivity Joni understands how people really talk, and that's just one part of what makes her better at songwriting than anyone else. I am not saying that Joni's lyrics and pronunciation can't be dicked with, but if the change is less than the original, why bother -- except for ego or misguided political correctness or other stupid reasons. So much for my resolution not to rant in 2006 . . . - --Smurf PS: We should all be glad Muller is the covers guy and not I. So while I have transgressed on the lyrics issue already, I also personally never sing the sexist "time of man" in Woodstock and sing instead "time of humanity" and when I read Scripture lessons to the congregation on Sundays I make the same change and (I will get tossed from the JMDL for this :-) ...) Joni's lyrics are less sacred to me than Scripture. Other than David Mamet plays and Shakespeare which aren't sacred either but too perfect as is, a word change/lyric change/arrangement change is, to be, a sign that the singer is awake and has a personal investment in what they are doing rather than just being a revival band. Joni doesn't sing everything the same way, or with the same words, every time, there is revisionism with Handel's Messiah and Mozart's Requiem and everything else so 'dicking' (a word I wouldn't choose because the mental image is weird) with anything done with knowledge is worthwhile artist endeavor to me. Sometimes good, sometimes not, but what the hell. I'll drink a case of you to *that*! And I loved *your* post, Mark in Sydney (not to mention all your fabulous Joni pics throughout the past year!), about the fireworks: "The fireworks over Sydney Harbour were spectacular again this year and the theme this year was Love, Hope and Compassion with a giant heart on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Please think those thoughts as it turns midnight in each time zone around the world." Yes! Love, Hope and Compassion. Got it...no problem on my end. (Now could someone please get this message to Bushco? Let him know it is something to strive for?) And pardon me for oversharing, but I got some really sad news yesterday morning -- and there is a fireworks connection. My former department head (from 1990 to 1996) passed away on Friday. I did not know he was ill, so the news of his passing was a terrible shock. He was a wonderful and wise friend to me, for so many years. The reason I am sharing this with you all at this moment of the world is because I went to visit him and his wife a few years ago when they moved to Baltimore, MD. It was my first solo pleasure trip after a few years of really horrible stuff/dark cafe days, and my soul really needed love and nurturing. My first night there they took me to a restaurant (a schooner, treating me like a queen) in Baltimore Harbor - -- and they had FIREWORKS! They were joking that they arranged the fireworks just for my visit. So if you don't mind, I want to spiritually share the image of Mark's beautiful fireworks in Sydney with my dear friend, Jose Luis Coy, who was born in Salamanca, Spain, in 1928. May he rest in peace. Emiliano or Mike, maybe you could send up a Spanish prayer or good thought for him? He has 9 siblings and 29 nieces and nephews in Spain and I feel this special Spanish spiritual connection right now. And to close on a brighter note, yesterday I finally celebrated Christmas w/ my boys, and it was a very Joni Christmas! (Chris the Elder was in Missouri w/ his girlfriend for Christmas, and just returned to CT.) We exchanged gifts, and the first one I opened contained 3 CDs. "Songs of a Prairie Girl", "For the Roses", and "Ladies of the Canyon". Chris: You probably have them all, right? Me: I've been dying to get "Songs of a Prairie Girl", but I do have the other two. But that's okay -- there are some I don't have yet, so I'll just exchange them. Thank you, honey! (huge smile) Michael: CHRIS! Chris: What???? Michael: I thought we discussed this, that we should not give Mom any Joni Mitchell stuff. It's like giving beer to an alcoholic! (smiles all around). Now I really don't care about material things, but I do love thoughtful gifts from the heart. The next one I opened was a beautiful angel ornament. The angel is holding a baby and it says: "Blessed are mothers." Awwwww! And to make it even better, it is packed in a beautiful box amid (I kid you not) what looks like rows and flows of angel hair. And the back of the box says: "Serenity is a gentle collection of angels that embody the flight of the human spirit." Amelia! And then, a bottle of my fancy French cologne -- my one big indulgence. (FYI, it is Magie Noire, by Lancome. I wonder if Joni ever wore this? ) And another gift, that the few sports and baseball fans here will appreciate: a beautiful framed photograph of my boys taken in the Monster Seats at Fenway (hi Anne!). The green grass of the ball field is in the background, and you can see a player or two. Chris and Michael are all smiles, arms around each other, and Chris has on his Red Sox jersey, and Michael his evil empire Yankee's jersey. Duality and both sides now -- they both came from the *same* sets of circumstance, and turned out so differently, sports-loyalty-wise. In the picture I also see brotherly love, along with the hope that yes, we can all get along, despite our differences. Okay, mes ami(e)s, that's all from me ce soir. I hope you all had a lovely holiday season and that we can keep all the good feelings alive. I won't say too much about it but I did feel the need to write something. It is a sad movie but a very beautiful one as well. Ang Lee has the eye of a true visual artist and also the ability to extract honest and powerful work from his actors. I shared 9 years of my life with a man who died in 1993 of AIDS. Most of you have seen my many posts about Edward. He was from a small town of about 1,500 people in southeastern Montana. His family was very accepting of us and we went back there often to visit. One of the main things that struck me about 'Brokeback Mountain' is that it is absolutely real. Any one of those characters, any one of the smokey bars, the run-down ranch houses, the ram-shackle places where poor people in small western towns live and work could have come from Baker Montana or any of the small towns in that state. The way the people talk, act, the look of them and the settings are all dead on accurate in this movie. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhall both give heroically honest performances as do all the actors. It is a beautifully made love story and a telling, accurate portrayal of the power of love and the soul-crushing pain and tragic consequences that can happen when it is thwarted and forced to hide. I hope you will all go see it.
