I can see it in my mind and, as I've told you, my niece is in Australia right now, and maybe she was there. She was in Melbourne but their plans were to go to Sydney at New Year's. This is the year the international time clocks are giving us a leap second. I wonder if that will screw up people's computers and so on? The wonderful thing about the internet is that we can connect with people the world over. Reading that it's already Jan 1/06 where you are is pretty cool. If we can get New Year's greetings at the time the clock turns over in every place that Joni listers are, it's kind of like instant reply (but better.) Being on a list like this gives me hope for the future, despite all the nastiness in the world. It's that connection with other people in different places and time zones that is more real than politics. I wish to all Joni-listers all the best for 2006 and I'm not marking this njc because I wish the same to all of you and hope you don't mind the bandwidth. - --- Mark-Leon Thorne wrote: > Happy New Year, Joniphiles. She probably had to listen to all the Raffi tapes when your son was little and she's probably had it up to here with your Broadway tunes, Muller! I haven't heard any SS yet, but every time I see the word "Illinoise", it makes me laugh. One of our local papers did a blurb on it and they kept calling it "Illinois", which was kind of illinoying. But it could be Chelsea in London. After I moved to New York, I spent a lot of time on a street called Bleecker Street, and on Bleecker Street is a theatre called the Garrick Theatre, and in the Garrick theatre are the Mothers of Invention. And, uh, they're coming over pretty soon. So this is Chelsea Morning, rainbow sunshine song influenced slightly by the Mothers of Invention." Wowie zowie! I think Joni might have inspired at least part of Neil's song, "The Painter". Joni talks like this all the time: >She picked the colors from the air> In many interviews, she's said that she tunes by "picking up the sonic references available" or that she tunes "to the sound of the seagulls". Another place I "hear" Joni in Neil's song is at the end, where he's talking about looking back. He says something like you can't chase every dream. Printing the lyrics on the website is a pretty strong clue. Plus, the song is in keeping with the "youth" theme of the event. The song lends itself to a Carnegie Hall singalong, too! Imagine all the adoring out of tune voices harmonizing in the venerable old hall, with its unsurpassed acoustics. (Although I'm hoping Joni will do one or more songs completely by herself, as well.) Further, I'm guessing that she wants to end it the way she started it. Here's a brief excerpt from a well-written bio in the "Brilliant Careers" section of Salon.com: "She worked days at Simpsons-Sears department store to pay the rent. Playing the Toronto coffeehouse scene at night, she met folk singers Tom Rush and Chuck Mitchell. She married Mitchell in 1965 after a courtship that lasted 36 hours, according to one report. Rush and Mitchell would be the first of many singers to make standards of Mitchell's tunes. The first of these, "The Circle Game," had become familiar to crowds in Toronto, and later Detroit, where the Mitchells moved, years before she recorded it. She wisely set up her own publishing company and named it after her own private mythology. "Siquomb" stood for "She Is Queen Undisputedly of Mind Beauty." Though the company was later renamed Crazy Crow Music, many of her loyal fans still describe Mitchell with her own fanciful acronym." http://www.salon.com/people/bc/2000/04/04/mitchell/index.html - -Julius In a message dated 12/31/05 9:16:21 AM, nurielt@yahoo.com writes: > Hello Dear Friends, > > Been meaning to ask you this since i saw that Circle Game is what Joni is > about to sing in the tribute: > Why has She chosen THIS song to be the one that ends everything? > > Love to know, > > Nuri ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Dec 2005 10:16:48 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Sufjan Stevens njc He did have a Raffi tape, but his favorite was The Lion King and one with songs about dinosaurs.
