Maybe one reason for the slow response is that it's a local charity. This list is international. It's a wonderful prize but who's going to pay for the air tickets to New York from wherever? Now, if that was part of the prize...I'd donate money to those little American kids. As it is, I have enough trouble keeping up my two cents contribution to prevent poverty in my own country. Then there's AIDS, disaster relief, sending optometrists to India, funding the republican movement...the list goes on. Good luck to those who donate. Enjoy the show, you lucky yanks. Dec. 26, 2005. SASKATOON-He was named the greatest Canadian. Could Tommy Douglas also be Saskatchewan's biggest hoot? A non-profit organization based in Alberta is conducting a census of the most humorous people of the past 100 years in Saskatchewan and Alberta. "We're not looking for a comic," said Derek Wilken, the executive "dictator" of the Cheers Project Humour-Language Society. "We're looking for someone who created the most humour." Wilken will tally the nominations and announce a winner from each province after the Jan. 23 federal election. "We've got names like Tommy Douglas out of Saskatchewan just because of the cartoons that were created of this guy, all the editorials and that kind of stuff and the fact that he really was a very funny man in his speeches," said Wilken, who was born in Saskatchewan but raised in Alberta. In November 2004, Douglas was named the greatest Canadian in a contest run by the CBC. Other nominees for the most humorous person from Saskatchewan include Jeanne Sauvi, former governor general; comic actor Brent Butt; ex-premier Grant Devine; journalist Allan Fotheringham; musician Joni Mitchell; and actor Leslie Nielsen. There's even a bit of a blast from the past, Regina gas bar owner Dick Assman, whose surname became grist for David Letterman's mill in the '90s. So far, Douglas and Butt are running neck-and-neck in the Saskatchewan race. In Alberta, Premier Ralph Klein is heading the pack by a big margin, said Wilken. Maybe I should give it another spin. Sometimes its best to be selective and only release the best music pared down...just ask Ryan Adams. As the biggest RA fan in the world, I'm irritated by his Jacksonville City Nights, and now 29? It's all relatively subpar, especially compared to Cold Roses which I loved, even though it's a Grateful Dead ripoff album. At least it's a good ripoff. Now, Son Volt, on the other hand, waits years to do another album, and it's probably the best record of the year, if not the decade. It's brilliant, musically, lyrically, rock-out-ly, and more. Okemah and the Melody of Riot. Go buy it. I'm very bummed that ben folds is no longer on the Tribute lineup, but, oh well. There's still much to be excited about. I'm staying at the Park Central as well, by the way. Mikey, good to see your post...the pictures were awesome! And how fecking cool about jack playing! Give him a hug for me. And what HAPPENED TO YOUR HAIR! Crazy! I love you, bro. I hope you can make it to the tribute, it WON'T be the same without you. I mean it. Incidentally, I saw Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion live this summer, and they were great. Pick up their album, another good one released this year. Lots of good music this year, yes indeed. Are we partying in NYC or what??? Now that you are married I think it is safe for us to sleep together don't you think?? Hey I thought Cold Roses was a Chris Issac rip off. I am picking up Arlo at the airport on Saturday. We will be live on FOX on New Years Eve as well as CNN. I know the CNN thing is suppose to happen around 10 minutes to midnight. Ya'll tune in and watch for us. Love Paz P.S. If you don't sleep with me than I am sleeping with Smurph in some corner somewhere. > > I wasn't impressed with Nellie McKay's first album at all, it sounded so > juvenile and poppy to me... Michael, It was so great reading your post, and the pics are great. (Where's your Fabio hair?) It's such synchronicity! In high school, Arlo was one of my favorite singers and I used to listen to his Hobo's Lullaby on 8 track all the time. I haven't heard it in years, but my high school friend bought me the CD for Christmas.......out of the blue. My fav's were "1913 Massacre" and "Ukulale Lady", and I've been listening to it non stop. I also read in the newspaper that Arlo will be in my area in Feb, so I hope to get tickets. Are you going to still be touring with him then? Sure wish I could be with you guys in NYC, and yes you can sleep with Alison now that she's married, but Smurph looks good in a halter top too :) xoxo Jimmy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Dec 2005 20:23:10 EST From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: Re: NJC Ridin' On The City Of New Orleans (LONG!) I wasn't going to get 29 because of the reviews, but I caved (getting cash for Christmas makes any purchase easier) and I'm glad I did - on the whole it's a whole lot better than Jacksonville, and "Night Birds" is the best song he's had all year, not counting a track released on a freebie RA DVD I got, forget the title. And thanks for mentioning Jay Farrar and Son Volt - this was a much anticipated CD for me and I was ecstatic that it exceeded my expectations. It not only rocks but lyrically he lets our corrupt government have it with both barrels. They're going to be coming to the Handlebar Jan 26th and I've got tickets for that, it'll be an awesome show as it's just a small club. I'll tell ya all about it when I see you in NYC. Since I'm thinking about my favorites for 2005, I may as well list 'em: Best single: Feel Good Inc. by The Gorillaz. If there's a catchier song than this that came out this year I'd love to hear it. Best 2004 release that I didn't get until 2005: The Arcade Fire - Funeral Favorite 2005 Album: Tie between: 1. Beck - Guero 2. Ben Folds - Songs For Silverman 3. The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema Also excellent: Rolling Stones - A Bigger Bang Son Volt - Okemah & The Melody Of Riot The Heartless Bastards - Stairs & Elevators Ani Difranco - Knuckle Down (great job of production by Joe Henry) Death Cab For Cutie - Plans (not what I expected but still pretty strong, hope they break the guitars back out next time round) John Mayer Trio - Try! (successfully leaving his teenage girl fanbase behind and putting on the mantle of successor to Stevie Ray - I knew he could do it) Alana Davis - Surrender Dorothy (I shouldn't like her as much as I do but she's got an irresistable groove, and her cover of "Don't Fear The Reaper" is my favorite non-Joni cover of the year) Mike Doughty - Haughty Melodic Nada Surf - The Weight Is A Gift (the pressure was on this followup and they came through with flying colors) Sun Kil Moon - Tiny Cities The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan (probably should be in a 4-way tie with my top 3, they can even rock out on a toy piano and a marimba fer crissake) The Foo Fighters - In Your Honor (like Ryan, a tad excessive for two discs, but Gawd if you pop the heavy one in the cd player on a road trip it is just perfect. I'll forever have a great memory of me and Nate cruising to the coast with this one cranked up. Haven't had 'em long enough to form a solid opinion but they're pretty good at first listen and would have been on the above list if I'd bought them when they first came out: Sleater-Kinney, Fiona Apple, Sufjan Stevens Favorite Joni Cover of 2005: Roine Stolt, "Sex Kills" (reminded me of the scene in Rocky when Adrian takes her glasses off and lets her hair down and looks pretty, Roine Stolt took this tune to where it belongs) Knowing I'll kick myself once I remember what I left out, Bob NP: Goo Goo Dolls, "Slave Girl" - --------------------------------- Yahoo! for Good - Make a difference this year. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Dec 2005 17:38:11 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Guessing the rest of the songs: Hey Oddmund - I really appreciated your picks.
