Nice to see you on the list again. I share your sentiments. This tribute, and parting with live-performance Joni, will be sweet sorrow. I'll be celebrating through it. What a gift her musical artistry has been to me... You mentioned that Joni made her major debut at Carnegie Hall. It's true. She walked out on that world-renowned stage, looked high and low, then said "It's a long way from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Carnegie Hall" to uproarious applause. That was on February 1, 1969. I don't think it's a coincidence that this tribute was scheduled for February 1, 2005. At least I hope it's not. Hi, seasons greetings to everyone. I've been a member of the list for the past year or so and enjoy the comments very much. This my first post. Joni must have the most devoted fanbase in the world and she deserves it on the sheer quality of her music alone. Blue, Roses, Court, Hissing and Hejira get better with every listen and are never far from my hi-fi and walkman. My favourite album though is Live at The Hague, 1983 - Joni at the height of her jazz rock powers - voice perfection and such range and power - For Free and A Case Of You couldn't be any better - brilliant band too. One can listen to this time and time again praying for her to let loose with her voice !! I wonder if Joni and her management / record companies have thought about officially releasing some more live and rarities albums in the sprit of "Bob Dylan - The Bootleg Series" etc. I sure many more of her massive fanbase would love to listen to such brilliant concerts such as Live at the Hague, 83 or the others I've been listening to recently. If anyone wants to do any trades, please mail me off list. I'm getting quite a Joni collection now thanks to www.dimeadozen.org Also, would love to go to a UK Jonifest if there ever is one again. Being a much bigger place, it may have more services. Its location is perfect for strolling over to Carnegie Hall. It's not in as residential a neighborhood as the Upper West Side but there's plenty to see within walking distance. It will probably be very noisy if your room faces Seventh Avenue, but you'd then be able to see and hear the city activity. The Central Park horse carriages go down 7th to get to the stables and I always like that clop clop sound they make mixed in with traffic sounds and the general never-ending city hum (unless there's a blackout). Anyone's first visit to New York is an exciting time. There's a surprise at every turn so just be prepared to go with the flow and enjoy! (Oh, and, keep in mind that if you stop in the middle of the sidewalk to chat or admire something you know only from photos, there are about 10,000 people behind you on that same sidewalk and they just might end up piling onto you, especially if you stop abruptly, so pull over to the side... like driving on a highway.) (Oh, and if it's morning rush hour or work-leaving time, expect people to be in a hurry and abrupt.) (And expect to do lots of talking... people here are very chatty, which is the Irish influence I think.) Since there was talk recently on list about Robert Rauschenberg... a big exhibit of his combines opens at the Met on December 20 so some people may want to see that. Very elegant! The Jungle line moves your spirit and your body first as the drums begin loudly and first and then suddenly brought low. That rhythm just moves me! I listen to it several times in a row too! I thought I was the only one!!! I love the beginning lyrics (and please correct me if I'm wrong) "Rousseau walks on trumpet paths..." Since I love art as well it puts me right into the mood of the song. I remember going to find a work of Rousseau's online so I could see how he painted. I think you are right about her spelling Scarlett "Scarlet". I remember that. Oh, I love that one too! One of my favorite lines in that song is, "Mimicking tenderness she sees...in sentimental movies" Living in the southern part of Virginia during my adolescent years, I was able to see a few southern belles in my time. The song made for very interesting thought especially the last line, "Shades of Scarlett conquering she says, 'A woman must have everything'...". To me, that line explans the whole "Scarlett O'Hara syndrome" in a nutshell. I really love the song! "Edith and the Kingpin" immediately struck me vocally because I also sing. I was drawn to it like a magnet! I love jazz and jazz vocalizations so that was the main thing that attracted me to the song at first. Then as she told the story, I could actually see the club, see the bedroom where they were "staring eye to eye"... wonderful imagery!!! I just wanted to sing the story like she did and pull that emotion out of the song too! It's a very good song to sing to! The melody allows you to throw your heart and soul into it! I have been very happy to see Joni evolve and grow musically and I love the direction she took with Hissing of Summer Lawns. That was right down my alley. I wasn't as found of her earlier music though I still liked it a lot! I liked the grittier, jazzier, more experimental Joni. Court and Spark to me was on the cusp between the Folk Joni and the Jazz Joni. I think that's why I like it so much! I am so glad that she had the courage to try new and different things. I will be forever grateful to her for taking that risk!!!! I love "The Jungle Line" too--- great poetic imagery, mysterious melody, and oh, those pounding drums-- one of those songs I like to listen to several times in a row, sometimes, because I feel it so much in my body, as well as in my mind-- but it's the SECOND song on my copy of the album! ;-) Fave lyrics: "Those cannibals of shuck and jive Will eat a working girl like her alive" Also like the poppy and drooling imagery, but not for the reasons that might sound like!! NOT my poison of choice, ahem. I'd sooner drink 17 glasses of Liebfraumilch, heh. Well, er, not. One or two would be pleasant... :-) >The cover art is so great and fits right into the theme of >what Joni is >singing about throughout the CD. I remember the >album cover had raised the >image of the snake so you could actually feel it. >(I think) I use my CD copy now, and haven't gotten the LP out for ages-- but I think so too. I like the song "Shades of Scarlett Conquering", BTW, but didn't Joni originally misspell it as "Scarlet" on the LP? As I believe she got some French wrong in "Free Man in Paris" on *Court and Spark*, tsk, tsk, unless my memory fails... ;-) >...one of my favorites on the CD is "Edith and the Kingpin" who as many >already have >heard me say, is Omar Shariff in my mind... Interesting. This is actually one of the songs I didn't care for much when the album first came out, I have to admit. There are some well-crafted lyrics in it-- "what does that hand desire", etc.-- but at the time I found the song and its characters rather depressing. They weren't people I felt I'd be interested in knowing personally, as I would some of the folks in "The Jungle Line" or "Shades of Scarlett, or even "Roses Blue"... ha, now THAT'S a song I should cover... it's one of my faves, even though I've felt it's a bit overly alarmist with regards to head-trippy priestesses, LOL. Anyway, with "Hissing..." I guess I hadn't fully shifted gears yet from Joni in more magical mode (don't know how else to put it at the mo, but it's STILL my fave of her "modes", so I probably STILL haven't shifted out of it!), as she was to my ear and in my mind on her first four albums especially. I seem to recall Joni had, amazingly enough, on rare occasions gotten some criticism from some reviewer(s), though I can't recall which one or ones, about being too "precious" or "Fairy Princess" or whatever. Those sure aren't the terms *I'd* use-- I dearly love those most enchanting earliest songs!! And I've loved many others since, of course, but still... past a certain point, it almost did seem as if she were reacting to such reviews by being determined to pick song subjects of greater "realism", with lots of ultra-modern and mundane rather than always as ageless or timeless-seeming imagery... and for awhile I found myself less consistently drawn to each and every song at times. I do recall an interviewer (maybe "Strolling Bone", aka "Somersaulting Rock"? t.h.) around the time of "Hissing..." asking Joni "What happened to the melodies?" I hate to say it, but I was sometimes wondering that very thing myself. Her melodies were still good, but not as consistently absolutely stunning as formerly, I didn't always think. Her lyric lines often seemed to become much more "wordy" (albeit certainly not in a bad way-- I LOVE words, cantcha tell??), and that seemed to lead to sometimes to more "talky"-sounding melodic lines. My best friend from college, also a singer and guitarist, actually quit buying Joni's albums after "For the Roses" or "Court and Spark", believe it or not! She just didn't like the changes in direction. I couldn't really understand her going to THAT extreme-- I always grabbed every Joni album the second it hit the stores, since Joni always was and still is greatly interesting to me, even if I do still miss the early "magical" stuff. ;-) Hey, true artists change and evolve. It's natural. Hmmm, but come to think of it, I remember one reviewer remarking rather snidely one year that Joni tended to favor physical description as if it were always profound, or something to that gist. Hmph. She IS an artist, after all, and I for one love her physical imagery overall. She paints extremely vivid word pictures, and as far as I'm concerned, they're pretty consistently profound, one way or the other. >Suave, handsome, and dangerous. This morning, I wondered what Edith would >actually look like...I have no >preconceived conception of who she could >be. Who comes to mind for >you? If you had to cast roles for Edith and the >Kingpin, who would play their >parts? Ummmm... how about-- Johnny Depp and myself? Tee hee... >Omar Shariff definitely is my "Kingpin"! The one you cited and "she covers her eyes during the x rated scenes". On paper, that line is mearly good, but the Joni sings it: she finds whatis sad about Scarlet--the wanting of an impossibly perfect man (and any man holding out his arm ...) who is as romantic as the leading men (she must have everything)--and expresses it without melodrama. I love how you refer to the gentleman caller as an "impossibly perfect man"...that totally fits the song!!!!!He holds out his arm like a gentleman and she rejects him by seeking to hurt him. I never thought about it but you are right. The way that Joni sings this lyric with drama but more matter-of-factly drives the point home even moreso. I was just thinking, with all the great talent in this group, why couldn't some jmdlers send in some demos to the people organizing the Joni tribute at Carnegie Hall ? Sure, there are some big names on the roster, but clearly there are many lesser knowns. Surely there could be room for a few more numbers, since the confirmed list seems to be changing daily. I'm thinking Kay Ashley's Black Crow or Sherelle Smith's Edith, these immediately spring to mind, but there could be many others, such as David Lahm, Patti Witten, and the list goes on and on. Is this just a pipe dream or could this become a reality? Alternatively, how about staging a second night of music at some smaller New York venue for an Alt Joni tribute ? Just a thought - but all actions spring from ideas, and I think that this is a good idea just begging to happen. It still says "20+" and "partial list of performers." So, with exactly 20 performers listed...one has to assume at least one someone else will be added, and perhaps never formally advertised. That would not surprise me a bit, given the low media profile Joni's been cultivating in recent years. - -Julius In a message dated 12/19/05 5:42:09 PM, bree_mcdonough@hotmail.com writes: > I went to the website of the tribute and I noticed " special guests" had > been removed. > > > That worries me a little. > > > Bree ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Dec 2005 22:51:58 -0500 (EST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Joni in literature: The way the crow flies, by Ann-Marie MacDonald Here's a Joni mention in a book I've just finished reading: "Life is a series of random events, there is no such thing as morality, there are only collective delusions, occasional leaps of faith, and feats of self-interested discipline that prevent people from exploiting one another all the time. This is what she and Jocelyn talk about on Friday nights while listening to Ladies of the Canyon. By three a.m. they have dug out The Beach Boys and are talking about sex. Jocelyn has gone all the way. Madeleine has not." MacDonald, Ann-Marie: The Way the Crow Flies (Vintage Canada Edition, 2004), p. 676. LaGuardia or Newark airports are the best (Newark is actually even easier that LGA). JFK is really far from Manhattan, so that's a bit of a pain. i've become very excited that everyone else is so excited about this. for me it would be icing if joni performs; the evening will certainly be made up of musicians doing their best to honor this body of music. but they won't sound like joni when they play her music. all the better. but now i'm even more thrilled that so many people are coming into town. just so you all know, i'm planning on taking the next day off and would love it if people want to meet for touristy stuff, maybe at the metropolitan museum. and anyone who wants to contact me directly for sight-seeing ideas, please do. as any lister who has visited might know, i adore this city and love sharing it with friends. kay and i are not doing the vip package, so we'll be looking for a likely place near carnegie to have a pre-show dinner, meeting at around 5:30 (i've got one solid idea). i'd also like to find a place to go afterwards, where 20 or so people can easily walk in. i'll keep looking. looking forward, jfp - bettye levette, let me down easy - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org]On Behalf Of Cassy Sent: Monday, December 19, 2005 10:56 PM To: Joni List Subject: Tribute Show So finally, after reading emails from many of you for years, dropping off the list when I had my second of three strokes and rejoining recently...
