Not that I deify the woman, but some critics are just mean. It is SO easy to be snarky. [Smurf, you call me bitter, but what do you know? ;-)] You snipe so steady You snub so snide So ripe and ready To diminish and deride! You're so quick to condescend My opinionated friend Hmm, how come so many people are so quick to offer their opinion when that opinion is derogatory? Because it's easier. A lot of people gave up on Joni around the time of "Hissing", a lot more at "Mingus" (what the HELL is that, they wondered). I missed some of Joni's stuff along the way, because of events going on in my life, but caught up later on. For the most part, I eagerly awaited every album and, when I got it, listening to it was almost like a sacrament. And you couldn't just listen once, because sometimes it took a while to get into it. With some albums, it sounded wonderful at first listen, so you'd want to listen again. With others, it sounded strange and you weren't sure what you thought of it, so you HAD to listen again. From what Barbara and I learned from the Internet, avoid at all costs the West End Studios. Also, if people don't mind a 20-25 minute subway ride, there are lots of hotel rooms in Queens (like the one we stayed in in Flushing); for the price of a tiny room sans bathroom in Manhattan you can get something very large with two beds. - -------------- patrick np - eurythmics, conditioned soul (live) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Dec 2005 14:11:47 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: guess the song Circle Game. . . . Rooms are not very expensive by Manhattan standards (check Jan 31 rates), especially if sharing the room, and the beds are real beds, regular queen or king size, and not low to the ground the way I've seen in some hotels (maybe to make the room look bigger); and the bathrooms are big (nice showers). Friends and family visited last February to see the Gates; children stayed with me and adults stayed at this hotel, and everyone was very pleased. Plus at one point we could all fit into one room for a while (cozily, but even that's not possible in most teeny itsy bitsy every inch counts NYC spaces). It's on the Upper West Side, a neighborhood complete with delis and stores and lots of people activity on Broadway. The staff was consistently friendly and helpful. One evening the doorman was helping us get a cab. There were none going our way, so we were talking and then realized he'd suddenly disappeared. How weird! He'd vanished! Then a cab screeches right up to the curb, and he jumps out full of energy, and we got in. He'd run across Broadway, gotten one of the many cabs going in the other direction, and had the cabbie do a U-turn (not always so easy) to come and pick us up. Ya gotta love that NYC figure-it-out get-it-done ASAP energy! We were all laughing at the surprise, even the doorman. So, unless this hotel has changed a lot since last February, this is a good place. Please do stay away from the Hotel Pennsylvania! It's a tourist trap (as are the hotels on Seventh Avenue), which isn't always a bad thing, but it's not automatically the best deal either. I'm still up in the air re February 1... (I think I've lost my joni-fanatic card somewhere). Sounds like a grand gathering here in NYC that may become irresistible even if it means juggling some other plans... gotta see. Debra Shea, in NYC P.S. I have no connection with any hotels here. Jim >From: Mark-Leon Thorne I'm not sure if this has been discussed before. I was just watching the video, Come In From The Cold. When Joni sings, For Free at the piano, she adds an extra verse. I've never heard these lyrics before. They are quite beautiful. She also changes the line about having 16 gentlemen to an "entourage".> ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Dec 2005 23:09:05 -0500 From: "patrick leader" Subject: RE: possible hotels in new york for joni tribute visitors the park central is wonderful. the recommendations i made below are, i believe, significantly less expensive, which is what i would be looking for. i don't think the park central is too expensive (and prices should be good that time of year) and, as you know, the location is perfect for this performance. you're also just a couple of blocks from central park. enjoy! patrick np - ultra nati, it's all over - -----Original Message----- From: Happy The Man [mailto:cactustreemotel@hotmail.com] Sent: Sunday, December 18, 2005 10:42 PM To: patrick leader; jonilist Cc: Gary Z Subject: Re: possible hotels in new york for joni tribute visitors My son and I have a room at the Park Central is this okay? Oh, yeah, the gypsy in "Song for Sharon" who lit a candle for Joni's love luck... that's a clever line about the money going up in smoke, even if the "spell" wasn't a success. >I figure the critics who claim Joni is "too precious", >or "too wordy" or "too... whatever" *just* *don't* >"get* *it* - LOL. It's always easier being a critic >than a creative soul. Ain't THAT the truth. If ya can't do it, review it-- if ya can't produce, reduce, and all... Sometimes I've read reviews that have totally trashed something I've loved, and I've wondered if the reviewer and I were from different planets or something... or I've read a rave review of something I absolutely, thoroughly, utterly, er, "disliked", and seriously mused as to whether the reviewer and I were from different UNIVERSES... >>Not that I deify the woman, but >>some critics are just mean. It is SO easy to be >>snarky. ... You said it. And as to "deifying" Joni: I think many of us have done that to the degree that we are so impressed and inspired by her work that we instinctively see/hear "the Goddess" in her, and we naturally revere that. It enhances and enriches our lives in some way. We feel blessed to have her and her work in the world. One doesn't need to be a Goddess religionist as such to have this experience, I feel, because "the Goddess" or the "Eternal Feminine" or whatever name or names one wants to call It/Her resonate in the human psyche at gut on an archetypal level, regardless of one's "religious beliefs". So this kind of natural "deifying" of one whose work we feel such an emotional, aesthetic, and even spiritual kinship with need have nothing to do with being trivially fannish in some silly slavishly adoring way, of course. Since becoming a recording artist myself, it's been a real trip for me to get letters from fans who seem to "deify" me, I must admit... proclaiming me "the voice of the Goddess" or whatever.. because although I truly appreciate and cherish that sort of praise, I know full well I'm only too human. WAY too human, that's for sure, LOL. Yet I imagine that, for whatever reasons, they're hearing "the Goddess" in me as I've heard Her in Joni and other singers whose work I especially admire. >Hmm, how come so many people are so quick to offer >their opinion when that opinion is derogatory? Because >it's easier. Yes, you're right about that! >A lot of people gave up on Joni around the time of >"Hissing", a lot more at "Mingus" (what the HELL is >that, they wondered). I thought "Mingus" was a fascinating album, though it took me some digesting or adjusting. It's not one of my faves, but it's very artistic, obviously. Now, I love blues of all kinds, but modern jazz isn't always my cuppa, though jazz of older decades definitely is. I can listen to that for hours on end. Even so, I got a big kick out of Joni doing a song called "The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines", since that's where I live! Hey, I mean, it's not like we're gonna get mentioned in zillions of songs like NYC, where my dad is from... ;-) >...For the most part, I eagerly >awaited every album and, when I got it, listening to >it was almost like a sacrament. I know what you mean... I felt the same way. I didn't just put it on in the background... I put it on and paid very close attention to it-- usually often. I fully absorbed it. >And you couldn't just >listen once, because sometimes it took a while to get >into it. With some albums, it sounded wonderful at >irst listen, so you'd want to listen again. With >others, it sounded strange and you weren't sure what >you thought of it, so you HAD to listen again. Yes, exactly. I felt the same way. Even if I didn't fully "like" it all right away, it was all interesting and compelling, so I kept coming back to it, sometimes kind of "working on" it. But then, when one recognizes artistic greatness, it's not always a mere matter of experiencing simple liking or disliking. It can be much, much more complex than that.
