Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- __________________________________________________________ Find your next car at http://autos.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Dec 2005 12:14:26 -0000 From: ReckersL@ebrd.com Subject: saying hello but really a cry for help (NJC) This is really a very urgent request for help from any computer boffins out there. I know that as a terrible lurker I can't redeem myself by dressing this message up as anything more Joni-relevant, but I assure you I DO still read all digests, laugh a Smurf's death tax jokes, marvel at Bob Muller's latest covers collection, and cheer for Patti as she manages to meet her hero Cindy. (I also still listen a lot to Joni, and recently bought her Shadows and Light dvd which I hope to watch as I get some time over Christmas.) And I keep hoping to read some announcement about plans for a next Jonifest somewhere new and exciting! (I have hopes of organising a Jonifest in France myself one year, but I guess 2006 would be too soon after our most enjoyable French gathering this year.) Anyway, after this quick intro, here is my terribly urgent plea. For the last few months, I have been busy literally every free second on my PC at home, trying to create a Kodak Photoalbum. This is not a virtual album but a properly printed album, ordered digitally via the website http://www.kodakalbums.com/UK/UK . I had to first of all download a "Kodak album editor" program on my own PC which then allowed me to create the album with my own layout, captions etc. I then spent, as I said, weeks and weeks of painstaking work to create this album. Last week the work was done, and I was ready for the last step: to send the album for printing, by pressing the "order" tab in the editor program. It seemed to "insert" the information correctly (I saw the bar reach 100% after some waiting), then it said "files being compressed for downloading" and that also seemed to reach 100%, but then immediately an error message came up saying "connection FTR server failed". I have contacted the helpline, who sent me these instructions: "This may be due to your browser (Internet Explorer) settings or a firewall. You can find the browser settings under: Settings, Control Panel, Internet Properties, Privacy tab. The setting should be ?Normal? or ?Accept all cookies?. If this does not solve the problem then open Editor and go to Settings, Advanced. Select ?Passive FTP connection?. If that does not help either then you will have to disable the firewall temporarily." I tried to follow all the steps, but I always end up with the same failure message. I assume I don't even have a firewall on the PC at home. Anyway, I was then told I could burn the information onto a CD-Rom and send it to an address in Holland. I did that Friday last week (the 9th) but with the Christmas post, it hasn't even arrived there! I try to keep this short but just want to explain how important this is to me. I would like to give the album as a present to an uncle in Belgium who is having a big family reunion on the 26th (Monday). I have digitally "grabbed" the photos with great effort from old 8mm films taken by my father 50 years ago, I have been slaving on getting them all restored, and if I can't show the album on the 26th, then most of the work will have been in vain because I may never see some of those members of the family again... I am desperate, and am trying one last time to send the damn stuff via the Editor program on my PC. If anyone understands what the problem could be and how I could resolve it, PLEASE let me know urgently, because I think that if I haven't solved it by this time tomorrow, I have no chance of beating the deadline. In any case, before I have a heart attack here, let me also quickly send my very best seasonal wishes, especially for a peaceful 2006, to all my friends on the list. Hopefully we'll meet up again soon! Lieve. ______________________________________________________________ This message may contain privileged information. I've been listening to "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" all week on my M:Robe (I-Pod) while commuting to work. It started with this irresistable urge to hear "The Drums of Barundi" in "The Jungle Line". I like that she put that song first because it always puts me in the mood for the content of the whole CD. The cover art is so great and fits right into the theme of what Joni is singing about throughout the CD. I remember the album cover had raised the image of the snake so you could actually feel it. (I think) Anyway, for me, "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" is a superb commentary on Joni's thoughts and feelings about everything from Rousseau to marriage to beauty and society's conception of it. Of course, one of my favorites on the CD is "Edith and the Kingpin" who as many already have heard me say, is Omar Shariff in my mind...Suave, handsome, and dangerous. This morning, I wondered what Edith would actually look like...I have no preconceived conception of who she could be. Who comes to mind for you? If you had to cast roles for Edith and the Kingpin, who would play their parts? Omar Shariff definitely is my "Kingpin"! I always just assumed he was some sort of big crime guy, but when I look at the lyrics again I see it's not that definite. Well, in MY version the kingpin will always be a big crime boss. :) As to Edith, that picture just came to me for no real reason. The same thing happens when I read novels. A middle aged Brando comes to mind. He's also someone of incredible desires as evidenced by the lines His left hand holds his right What does that hand desire That he grips it so tight. He is someone used to getting exactly what he wants but he has also learned that he must strike at precisely the right moment. Upon rethinking my casting choice, an even better Kingpin emerged. Wouldn't Dick Cheney be the perfect Kingpin? On the other hand, I never imagined Edith to be an innocent. She knows exactly what she wants and how to get it. The other women tell her of the Kingpin's "crimes and his glories" and later, in bed, "she says his crimes belong." She understands them and accepts them. She's probably committed a few of them herself. Bette Davis, in her prime, would be my choice for Edith. Each with charm to sway Are staring eye to eye They dare not look away You know they dare not look away says to me that Edith and the Kingpin are equals -- perhaps at some point they may become mighty opponents. This relationship now has them locked in -- a duel to the death so to speak. Interestingly, this is the middle song on Side 1 of the album as it originally was presented. The middle song on the opposite side, Harry's House - Centerpiece, is another lovely melody. To me both are tight, tense songs that have a sweetly malevolent current running just beneath the surface. Everything is not as it appears at first glance. They're little musical Hitchcockian masterpieces. In the indie version of the film, just cast Joni and Larry Klein. ;) Paul In MD - --------------------------------- Yahoo! Shopping Find Great Deals on Holiday Gifts at Yahoo!
