In my opinion, this album deserves the award and must say that it was a good thing that some tracks (on her website prior to her securing a record deal) were improved and re-mixed. I like Jon Brion but the stuff he did were not quite to my taste. Happy to see the albums of Ani Di Franco and Aimee Mann being nominated in 'minor' categories like album packaging. I don't really care for other categories except jazz and classical. In jazz, its great to see Me'shell Ndegeocello's "Dance of the Infidel" nominated along with the Pat Metheny Group and Joshua Redman in the Contemporary Jazz Album. Same with Sonny Rollins' live album in the Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, though I must say that I didn't quite like the entire album. It didnt capture this hornman's ferocity and playful inventions. Best of all is the jazz coval category where the ladies ruled. The latest albums from Dee Dee Bridgewater, Durham-native Nnenna Freelon, Dianne Reeves, Luciana Souza and Tierney Sutton are slugging it for the prize. Except for Souza's albums, I have all the other ladies' albums and I mst say that I lean a bit on Freelon's re-invention of Lady Day's songs. This is a contest of equals and whoever wins is truly deserving although I must also single out Janis Siegel's jazzy version of Broadway songs as an album that should have been nominated along with the rest. The opposite is true in the Traditional Pop category. The albums of Rod Stewart, Carly Simon, Johnny Mathis, Michael Buble and Tony Bennett are nominated but I don't have a favorite. Maybe because I don't own the albums mentioned. I listened to them in Barnes and Noble and maybe, I'll root for Tony Bennett. I like Carly but "Torch" and "My Romance" and "Film Noir" are much better standards albums than the one nominated here. Happy to see William Bolcom's name more than once in the classical categories! Mariah Carey seems to be on the upswing. Good to see the nominations of John Prine, Dave Holland, Death Cab for Cutie, Natalie Dessay. Kate and all, I haven't posted in what seems like yearrrrs, but I do want to respond here. Thanks for that cool link. I found the lake where my best friend from 8th grade tried to teach me to sail. Every time I would hear, something, hard to lee, I'd be knocked out of the boat. I still want to learn how to sail though. Today marks the day that Smurf quit smoking 2yrs and drinking - 3yrs. ago. I can't speak for Smurf, but I talked with him last night and he was so touched that you thought of that. For the Holiday season, my favorite hidden treasure, Claudiasansoucie.com I just found her cover of Madeline Peyroux, "Don't Wait" She's doing some live shows now in Baltimore with Randall from France Joni fest,no. I like Jon Brion but the stuff he did were not quite to my taste I'm equally thrilled, and had the pleasure of seeing Fiona in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago, playing to a packed house. Though I must say I like the "Brion version" of the album more than the official version. There is some talk that they will release that too, I hope they do. Brion said that the leaked version was not totally his work as someone had tampered with the tracks. Fiona is the gen-x's Joni, imo, confessional, wholly original, great singer. Though not as prolific!
