It's been out for more than a year, and I still play it all the time. There's alot on the CD that "sticks". The album has no hints at all that Ms. Staples is getting along now. Tonight she forgot the title of her CD for example, then fell, momentarily. But she still has a deep gift for vocalizing at the end of a line. Remember a song called "Respect Yourself"? As I recall her father, Pops, took a verse which ended with this: >You the kind of gentleman who want everything your way.> >Take the sheet off your face boy, it's a brand new day> Then a woman's voice goes, >"Way-ay-ee-ay-ee> >Respect yourself!"> That was Mavis. It's not scatting; I think it's gospel shouting. Those little comments don't look like much on the page but she conveys joy and faith without text. On the coldest night so far, she had folks in Dayton, Ohio doing some old school, southern Baptist, call-and-response. Mavis Staples rocks. >She said, "Tell me are you a Christian, child?"> >I said, "Ma'am, I am tonight."> Marc Cohen had it right. Amen, Jim PS, Can you feel it? I said, "Can you FEEL it, nah? Mmm-hmm-mmm." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Dec 2005 23:06:02 -0500 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu, Lama" Subject: Subject: question for Joni Q1: "My uncle's 2nd cousin said he wrote a song about killing a man in Memphis, just to watch him die, and you stole it. Is that true? No, no. ... Wait. It was Johnny Cash who stole his song. So, like... Do you know if he did? Steal the song, I mean?" Q2: Why'd you put down the uke, man? I was reaching for humor but thanks. I listened to 3 interviews (thanks Simon) and the full 50 minute lecture on the Medicine Wheel this week, so I've sorta heard it all. Bob said, >And did anyone notice the Bruce Cockburn card? Joseph leading Mary and the baby through the desert with a TANK in the background. Chilling.> I guess Rodney would say, "Boy, what a tough neighborhood, ya know? Even the *church* is tough. One usher passes the collection plate and another puts a gun to your head." Jim From: Bob Muller [mailto:scjoniguy@yahoo.com] Well, you know that only Joni would create a greeting card that merits this kind of analysis - well done, Jim. And did anyone notice the Bruce Cockburn card? Joseph leading Mary and the baby through the desert with a TANK in the background. Perhaps the kid is dreaming of > having a hit CD that's bigger than Jesus. LOL! Right, right. Tito Jackson is marketing to fundamentalists by levitating merchandise and quoting John Lennon. This could be the biggest "in store promotion" of the new century.
