What was that that just came speeding by?? A bird? A plane? Karl Rove running from justice? No, it's 2005 zipping by - just one more month to go, and with another new month comes the now traditional "announcement of the covers"! (Trumpet fanfare...duh, da-da-dut-dut-dut-DUUUH!) Which brings us to Volume 71 in the ever-burgeoning, never-ceasing fount of Joni cover tunes - and a fine tome it is, too. Here's what's on it: 1. Hip Graffiti - Woodstock/Fragile: California area jazz combo Hip Graffiti gets the party started with a fine medley of two classic pop tunes, Joni's Woodstock and Sting's Fragile. The two join forces here in a gentle bossa nova beat with stellar singing and playing all around. 2. Dennis Caplinger - Big Yellow Taxi: An instrumental version from a recent "Acoustic Tribute" to the Counting Crows. In my opinion, the Crows have plenty of top-drawer original songs for this kind of treatment, but if it means there's more jingle for Joni, I say bring on the tributes! Very nice fiddle thrown into the mix here, a very pleasant track from start to finish. 3. Yr Awr - Hyn O Fyd: No, it's not a secret code - it's Both Sides Now in Welsh. And I do love the non-English language Joni covers, this one features a nice chorus/harmony vocal. And I thank the JMDL'er who sent this one to me...I forgot who it was though dammit. Getting old sucks. If you're still out there, stand up and take a bow my friend. 4. Carol Grimes - Two Grey Rooms: I'm very glad to finally see TGR get some attention in the covers arena; this is the first of TWO on Volume 71. This one by London's Carol Grimes is almost a spoken word/cabaret version, a little jarring at first (because it's so different from Joni's) but actually much more enjoyable with each listen. Also features some nice fiddle work. 5. Joellen Lapidus - Carey: Joellen, as many of you know, was the luthier for Joni's first dulcimer, and she's referred to by name by Joni in the classic James Taylor BBC concert recording. And while I like the different arrangement and Joellen's dulcimer playing, her voice is certainly nothing to get too excited about. Again, it's always tough to have your vocal compared to Blue-era Joni, probably not even fair to do that. And Joellen does have a lot of fun playing and singing here, so that's a good thing. And for those of you scoring at home, she sings "mantle of the moon" instead of "Mattala moon". 6. Good Egg - A Case Of You: Here's a really obscure one from a 1980 LP, back in the day when this song wasn't covered much. Don't know much about Good Egg...this one closely resembles Joni's arrangement, and also is played on dulcimer. The vocal's no comparison though, sounds way too weak & nasally. 7. Shirley McDonald - Both Sides Now: Shirley hails from Australia, maybe some of the Aussie JMDLer's know more about her, this is pretty much a standard strings/harpsichord/pop arrangement, her voice is OK but nothing that thrills me. 8. Viveka Davis - Both Sides Now: Viveka appears to be more actress than singer, appearing in lots of film & TV - BUT this is a SWEET BSN cover to my ears, an original arrangement, done with a pop-soul-country twangy-guitar feel and with a vocal that is a deadringer for Natalie Merchant. 9. Artists In Resonance - Woodstock: College acapella from The University of California in Berkeley, a pretty vocal version, very tender, airy, and haunting, and I have to say a big THANKS to the good crew at AiR for sending me this one since it was on a CD that's now out of print and unavailable. 10. Masaki Ueda - Both Sides Now: What would it sound like if Richie Havens was Japanese? If that question is just burning a hole in your brain then you'll want to listen to this recording pronto. Masaki is a jazz/blues singer, and this guitar & voice version is a solid one, with a rich, warm vocal and a lovely saxophone solo as well. I just love recordings like these because they remind me of just how much Joni is loved and respected around the world, and that makes me feel good. 11. Ellen Metzger - Two Grey Rooms: And here's the second TGR cover on 71; this one is a bit more vocally accessible than Carol Grimes' version and adds a muted trumpet into the mix, a very nice addition imo - makes me yearn for that Joni-Miles collaboration that never happened. Hopefully these will generate more interest in what I consider to be one of Joni's finest songs. 12. Ellen Metzger - Both Sides Now: I guess I can't fault Ellen too much for turning in another version of the franchise, she DID do TGR too...and this one is pretty and simple, almost sung as if it were a lullaby. It does make me cringe when she starts out "Goes and flows of angel hair..." - I mean what does "Goes" mean in that context? Still, better than "swirls & curls" or "Oors & Ploors". 13. Take Five - The Circle Game 14. Take Five - Chelsea Morning 15. Take Five - Both Sides Now: Anyone who claims that Joni's songs aren't "folk music" just needs to listen to these three tracks from 1970 by Take Five, a campus folk combo from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. These sound like they came from the Mighty Wind soundtrack, sung by a wholesome cornfed quintet of pretty smiling folks. 16. Restless Wind - Night In The City: And speaking of winds, it's our old buddies Restless Wind, a fine folk-rock trio from San Antonio. They've done a bunch of classic Joni songs on earlier volumes and they do a good job with them. This one, like the others, is very similar to Joni's own in terms of arrangements, tempo, instrumentation, etc. 17. The Movin' Dream Orchestra - Both Sides Now: I expect to hear Nurse Ratched saying "Medication time" while this one is playing. Too much schmaltz for my tastes, it's too sterile and programmed. 18. Connie Champagne - A Case Of You: When to comes to gay icons, there's Judy Garland and then there's everyone else. Well, Judy never recorded a Joni tune (she died in '69 just as Joni was coming into her own), but thanks to Connie Champagne who does this song in her Judy Garland tribute show "Imagine Judy Garland", we get a sample of what a Joni cover by the "other Judy" might sound like. And if you like this, you should hear what Connie does with Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody"! 19. Lisa Asher - Both Sides Now: Sorry for so many BSN's on this volume (eight in all) but at least there's quite a bit of disparity between them. This one comes from a live CD from New York City cabaret singer Lisa Asher, and being a live take, it's got a nice energetic, emotional vibe to it. Me Likey. And that concludes the rundown of this month's Volume...sort of strange that the December issue doesn't have any River covers on it, but that's the way it goes in the unpredictable, never a dull moment, live on the razor's edge world of Joni covers. And the cover of Court and Spark looks like it might be a mate for the Clouds cover. (If you store them face to face, they make an mp3.) Uhm, her record company took out a billboard in LA somewhere that read "Joni Mitchell takes forever." Then there's the graceful shot of the songwriter doing the backstroke, inside The Hissing Of Summer Lawns. And the constant dissection of her love life in interviews. And artful but decidedly peek-a-boo lyrics. Don't forget the various body parts on the cover of DJRD, along side a child, no less. Wasn't she french kissing on a poster? Gees, she did everything except use the sound of bed springs as a rhythm track. Probably only Joplin & Slick were racier than Joni. But Joni got the balance just right in many things, and the tasteful sensuality in her celebrity image was one of them. All the best, Jim L'Hommedieu Jerry Notaro said in part, >I don't think people are being critical of Joni's appearance, and I think it is interesting on significant levels. She was part of the vanguard of women who refused, along with Joan Baez, Laura Nyro, Janis Ian, etc. It was attempt to have the listener take their music seriously, unlike the opposite of today. You can hardly look at the ads of even classical pianists or cellists without peeking nipple and saucy stare.> ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Dec 2005 00:49:47 +0100 (CET) From: Joseph Palis Subject: Re: they are playing joni in some small shop, now Esther S. I guess this song has been discussed a lot of times on the list, but unfortunately, I wasn't there to read it!Nevertheless, I thought I'd ask if some of you knew something more about this, or if you have any opinions about the topic: I read something in the JMDL library, an article from Uncut, 2003, where Nick Johnstone says that: 'Track five, the very Laura Nyro-Carole King sounding jazzy piano ballad "Blue" is rumoured to have been written as a thank you letter to James Taylor for pulling her from her despair.' Do you know anything about this? (and what about the David Blue-rumour? Is Blue a nickname for someone or the personification of melancholy?) I don't want to be a "gossip-broadcaster", but I blame this on Joni: Why did she put a capital B in Blue? As I see it, that is to open up for such speculations! :) All the best, Karen Marie ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Dec 2005 19:43:48 -0600 From: "Michael Flaherty" Subject: Re: Court & Spark art now on ebay On Thu, 1 Dec 2005 16:56:36 -0800 (PST) Bob Muller wrote: > I dunno, Rosie - sorta makes it look even MORE like a >significant piece of history, doncha think? > > Bob That's what I thought too. RealAudio isn't supported. One could conceivably convert the RA file to one of the other formats, but since you've streamed it, it never hit your hard disk in a useable form.
