Linda Ronstadt would love this. In 10 minutes, I counted 3 songs that she recorded: "Baby Baby", "Heat Wave", and "Tracks Of My Tears". All the best, Jim ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Nov 2005 21:28:49 -0800 (PST) From: A Friend Of Spirit Subject: An Introductory Post From A Long Time Lurker Greetings Jonilistas, I'm Paul from MD and I've been a lurking member of this list for longer than I'd care to admit. After getting so much out of this list and getting to know all of you so well, I figured it was time you got to know a bit about me as well. I'll try to make this as un-ramble-y as possible. Here goes! My first encounter with Joni was back in my high school days when "Help Me" was a hit and I was a white bread, Top 40 radio listener. I liked the song so well that I bought the 45 (a rarity for me because I normally bought albums when I bought at all) which featured the wonderful "Just Like This Train" on the flip side. About the same time, the area's first FM radio station hired a midnight DJ, Astrid, who played an eclectic mix including some Joni. I specifically remember "Carey" as one of her favs. In college I heard "Court And Spark" and "For The Roses" played in my dorm but they mostly filtered in as background music. In 1977, while working at a hotel in Ocean City, Maryland, we had a record salesman stay there. He invited some of the staff up to his room to buy his samples and extra records. Albums blanketed the room but one black and white cover caught my eye -- "Hejira". Cool cover and Joni Mitchell was the girl who sang that peppy song "Help Me". What wasn't to like? I snapped up the album for the (even then) bargain price of $2. When I hurried home and popped the record onto the turntable, "Coyote" then "Amelia" started to play. What was this? This jazz inspired record didn't sound like anything I'd listened to before and I wasn't sure I liked it. The chords were "funny", Joni's phrasing was "off" and you certainly couldn't sing any of this stuff in the shower. When I turned the record over and heard the first chords of "Song For Sharon" though, it touched something within me ... today I say that if my life had a soundtrack, those opening chords would surely be it. Still the rest of the album was as moody as the first side and I was certain I'd thrown away $2. Always the frugal shopper, I had to listen a few more times just to make sure I got my money's worth. "Furry Sings The Blues" was the first song I "got". For me, it seemed more straightforward and accessible than the others. I already liked the opening chords on "Sharon" so maybe I could get into that one as well. Slowly, each song unfolded for me, almost like individual gifts -- a phenomenon that has occurred with other Joni music as well. This "new type" music would become my favorite album of all time. After "Hejira", I bought and instantly loved "Hissing" and "Court And Spark". By this time, I was hooked. Then Mingus. Oops! Sorry folks, she almost lost me on that one. (Hey, I get it now, I just didn't get it then. Has Joni's voice EVER sounded better?) But I heard "Wild Things Run Fast" playing in a record store shortly after it's release and, of course, bought it. I started filling in the earlier albums and added the new ones as they came along. I missed "Dog Eat Dog" when it first came out but bought CMIARS and NRH and loved them. I'm a big fan of Joni's Geffen period. Joni and I almost had another Whoops! moment when I bought "Turbulent Indigo". What happened? The songs were so spare, so unlike the verbose Joan. I seriously considered that perhaps she'd suffered a stroke. And the voice was a little worse for the wear. But again I followed along. When she finally got to Travelogue, I felt Joni finally found her mature voice, vocally and stylistically. And then she quit. Go figure. Anyway, thanks for following along. BTW Em, the other morning you wished we could all have coffee together. We do, you're just not here in person. The Joni Digest and coffee are part of my morning routine.
