I always felt there was a connection between these two songs, but could not really put my finger on it. In Blue Boy, I sense a relationship borne of superficial admiration (infatuation) dying early for lack of something deeper to sustain it. A lovely but puzzling song for me (feeling like there is some autobiographical element to me - like A Strange Boy - but if so - and in either case - I wonder what Joni was doing there?), covered beautifully by our friend Jack Neilson in the Pazfest CD. The university drama professor has scored a bit of a coup, creating a musical play about Mitchell's life that has her personal stamp of approval. Starting this week, 11 young women will portray Mitchell in his show Joni Mitchell's Songs of a Prairie Girl, based on the one-time Saskatoon artist's centennial CD. It all began last spring. "The initial inspiration was purely practical, in that we were planning the season . . . and as usual it came down to a discussion about gender balance, and the fact there are a lot of women in the department and so few plays that have major roles for women," said Guedo in an interview. Guedo took it upon himself to find a play with a number of female roles. He has also thought for some time about incorporating music into a production, because there are a number of drama students with strong musical abilities in the department. "The brainwave just at that time was when Joni was putting out her compilation disc, Songs of a Prairie Girl. It had just come out." Guedo was working toward Greystone Theatre's November-December play slot. With female roles and music on his mind -- plus the province's centennial - -- he thought, "Why not take a chance? So I e-mailed her, contacted her agent on the West Coast and sort of ran an initial proposal, a cursory one, past them. "They passed on the info to Joni and word got back that she would be delighted to see a treatment." Guedo put together a proposal, did a treatment and sent off the package. There was a protracted waiting period, "but it eventually came back with her saying that she gave her blessing," reports Guedo. "In fact, her words exactly -- you have my blessing." Her agents in Vancouver told Guedo that she wanted to add some extra songs into his production, because she hadn't been able to put all the songs she wanted on her centennial CD, and of course he agreed. "It was in a sense her recognition of how Saskatchewan and how the Prairies shaped her," said Guedo of the CD. "What we're doing with it is in a sense making it a celebration not only of her work, but of Saskatchewan as well, but through her words and through her music and through her images." Songs of a Prairie Girl, however, is not a traditional musical, said Guedo. "If people come expecting Cats, they'll be sorely disappointed," he said. "It's not a standard musical, not a straight-ahead biography of Joni Mitchell . . . if one had to pigeon-hole it in terms of a genre, it would be more of a revue" -- a theatrical piece that showcases the work of one composer. The challenge for Guedo was to take Mitchell's work, and to thread a theatrical line through it. To that end, there are 11 actors in the cast, all women and all students of the drama department, except for senior artist Vesti Hanson. Guedo says they are all playing different aspects of Mitchell. The songs are in the order that Mitchell requested, layered with dialogue and featuring her works of visual art in the background. "It's more fluid, more stream of consciousness than A leads to B." It does have a full circle feeling to it, however. The first sung piece is Urge for Going, all about the cold winter and the desire to leave; the final piece is Come In From The Cold. The songs range from jazz and blues to Mitchell's straight-ahead rock in Raised On Robbery. The actors are backed up by a live band, made up of Angie Tysseland, Alan Long, Kimbal Siebert and Dennis Gibson. It's still a work in progress, but Guedo is pleased with it. It has gone through several drafts and is constantly evolving in rehearsal, he said. But the main thing is to do the artist justice: after all, her music has defined so many eras for so many listeners. "You can chart your life through some of her music," said Guedo. He has his fingers crossed that she might attend. There are no guarantees, but he has heard through Mitchell's former drama teacher Bob Hinitt that she is considering it. "It would be incredible if she did. I wouldn't want the girls to know what night." - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deb Messling -^..^- dlmessling@rcn.com - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Nov 2005 08:52:10 -0800 From: Mike Friedman Subject: Re: AIMEE covers RIVER Those of you who like Aimee Mann ought to check out her ultra deadpan cover of the theme to The Spy Who Loved Me, yes that Carly Simon tune from from the late 70s...it's VERY funny. Somewhere there is a Joni interview with a DJ who was somewhat crushed when she told him the "holy man" in RNH was not a DJ, but a recording artist. I've heard of the Cohen connection, too. Another possibility would be Al Kooper (Blues Project, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Dylan). In his book, Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards, he writes of meeting Joni in a bar in NYC. She had the hots for the Blues Project's drummer (likes those drummers!) but he was attached, so she was crying on Kooper's shoulder. They eventually went to her apartment, where she played some of her songs for him. He kept asking for more, loving what he was hearing, and even calling an annoyed Judy Collins at 5:30am, who had to get up soon to go to the Newport Folk Festival. Kooper talked her into taking Joni along, who "stole the whole show". He concludes: "Judy eventually recorded the song I thought she would like, "Michael from Mountains," and also had a huge hit with "Both Sides Now," another of Joni's songs. Joni never thanked me, but when I heard the album *Ladies of the Canyon,* that was thanks enough. Maybe I should thank *her*. I had only heard Tift Merrit debut album from 2002, which has nice catchy melodies and not a single low point. So i was curious to see her in person but at the same time not expecting too much because shes a + new country ; artist and country is not my favorite musical style. First she put the audience at ease by speaking remarkably good french and some idioms, not bad for a North Carolina girl. Its hard to believe shes been playing for 8 years as she looks very young. She has the simplicity of the + girl next door ;. On about half of the songs she plays acoustic guitar with her guitarist (Brad Rice), some with a tambourine, some songs she played a (cheap) keyboard by herself, and where she really astonished me is when she did 2 numbers alone on guitar (and harp) without any kind of amplification on either the voice or the instrument. The melodies were all instant hooks, and she sang them with true passion. She has the voice of an angel, and at the same time there is a little flaw in the diamond which gives it a uniqueness and keeps it from ever being boring. Fortunately the necessities of traveling light made her leave the rest of the band and the record producer at home. This + naked ; format allowed the true artist to come out, and I much prefer it to her overproduced album, IMO. Ive probably seen 1500 concerts in my life, but this one blew me away, without warning. As a comparison it was like seeing and hearing a young Bonnie Raitt (Angel from Montgomery) with a tad of Ryan Adams. She went out back of this small venue to sign autographs in the rain. Someone held a small umbrella over her as she signed and stood for photographs until every person was satisfied. A great performer and a very genuine person. BTW, try out Michael Penn's new album. It is very good also. It was nowhere near as horrible as the last MTV Music Awards. But 3 hours is just too danged long!! Still worth it to see Santana and Los Lonely Boys blow the roof off the place. Carlos should join the band, they could conquer the world. Also, I've seen Sheryl Crow do "Good is Good" on about 4 other shows-this was her best rendition IMO, and her new album is really good, too, and deserves better reviews than it's gotten. Eurythmics was kinda fun. Stones good as always despite technical problems. Mariah, thanks for the dress.
