Nice to see a post from another Aussie. I was a JMDLer back in 1996 but only recently rejoined. There has been a lot of material zooming around the globe and, yes, mostly CDs and DVDs. A couple of other methods have been trialed recently too; BitTorrent downloading and posting on yousendit.com. Bob's covers are in full flourish and I, myself have taken to creating some desktop pictures and have been posting them on yousendit. I'm up to desktop pic #11 so far. There are more to come. If you're after anything in particular, just ask. If it is something that needs to be mailed, I'd be happy to since I'm in the same country. If you would like one of the desktop pics, e-mail me off list and I'd be happy to attach one to an e-mail or zip the whole lot for you. Glad to have you back. Welcome. I won't say they play a LOT of Joni on this station, but they do play some. Maybe Joni wouldn't approve of her music being played in a "folk" context, but I do. Every time I hear slouching, I always want to say "Don't call me Shirley!" Again, Joni probably wouldn't approve. It may be about art, too, human endeavor, the old struggle of flesh and spirit. A woman's dream to fly is risky, courageous. Link this to the utter disappearance of Amelia. She says, "Maybe I9ve never really loved," perhaps realizing that it wasn't love she searched for, but ascension. Love represents ascension (flying to the sun) but it falls short? Pair this with the Icarus story, which tells us flight is foolish, unattainable, and it will kill you. What happened to Amelia? Did she attain ascension or merely run out of fuel and crash into the ocean without a trace? These are the artists options then. Settle for mortal love with its brief, and ultimately heartbreaking passions, or continue to rise, alone, unknown and unknowable, perhaps to Amelia's fate. Hey, where's my Phd? Hi Patti, I agree with your analysis. It's what I think about when I listen to Amelia. At first though, when I heard, "it was just a false alarm," I thought she didn't have to go to the bathroom after all... that's the way my parent's used the phrase when I was growing up. My dad was a navigator in the Air Force so maybe he started using the phrase like that, applying his aviation training to family life. Anybody else heard it used that way? Phd? Hi Mark! That's exactly how I have always taken the song!!! Thank you for saying that!!! It's exactly what comes to me whenever I hear "Amelia". I've always taken it as a conversation betweent the two. I love what you are saying about Joni crashing down to earth into someone's arms not doing it for her either. I really like your take on it! Sherelle Mark wrote: Also, it occured to me that she's really addressing two people or entities in 'Amelia'. At the Gorge in '98 she introduced the song by saying she's talking to a ghost. But I think she might also be addressing the part of herself that wants to be up there in those clouds with Amelia. But she's telling that self that it has failed to find whatever it is that's lacking in her life. But crashing down to earth into some guys arms hasn't done it either. All her quests turn out to be false alarms. I'm really enjoying reading everybody's take on 'Amelia'. It stimulates new thoughts and associations. Anybody care to relate this one to 'Judgment of the Moon and Stars'? It occured to me that there are connections. One of my favorite pastimes these days is to do so and often come upon artists that I am not familiar with, as well as some that I am. Albertina Walker. Defining her in my terms is good for me. What a talent. Why haven't I heard of this woman before? Powerful, soulful, moving. This lady can sing and how. Wow, wow, wow. Gospel music. Don't usually travel to the gospel area but just to listen to her makes all the choir music bearable. Candi Staton. Can I ever get enough of this lady? No. Tragic that many, if not most, of her recordings were done with sub-standard material and musicians. "Young Hearts Run Free" is a fine album but have heard two others that even she couldn't make decent. Have found numerous other tunes on Limewire from her that showcase her talents. She even does a cover of 'stand by your man' that is quite good. That is one of those tunes that I consider to be untouchable and shouldn't be done by others. She also does a great job with an Elvis favorite of mine 'Suspicious Minds." Clay Aiken Don't care much for todays artists and have tried a few of them that I wasn't familiar with on the wire. Most are pretty disappointing to me. Surprisingly enough I find this guy really good. He has a great amount of talent. Fair effort on 'have yourself a merry little christmas', another one of those shouldn't be done by others tune. See great things for him once he starts to put himself on these records, if he is able to get past it all and dig down deep for what is inside. Pretty sure he is a pink team player. np: I Believe in Love- Barbra Streisand ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Nov 2005 22:26:33 EST From: LCStanley7@aol.com Subject: Re: dislikes list, njc Ron wrote: but yeah - they'll continue blaming america for all their problems - african politicians seem to have an amazing knack for not taking responsibility. It's a novel about an Indo-African in Kenya, from his childhood in the mid-60s to present day. It's an examination of contrasts and in-betweens - - between the European whites who ruled the country to begin with, and the African blacks who were the dominated class, and the brown people - African-born but of Indian origin, who are somewhere in between. It deals with the Mau Mau rebels and Jomo Kenyatta, the independence of Kenya and all the fallout from that. There's a great deal about the corruption and bribery in the African politicians, including money given to them by American interests. It shows how a person can get sucked into the bribery and corruption without ever intending to and end up being indirectly responsible for the murders of a number of people he loves. The Chicago Jazz Composers Collective celebrates its fourth anniversary with a concert featuring one composition from each composer. This year the composers in residence are taking a cue from Duke Ellington in presenting a series of jazz portraits ... of people, places, and imaginary realms. My own composition is a new work in two parts titled The Fall of America, scored for piano, bottleneck-slide guitar, tenor saxophone, flute, vibraphone, bass, and drums. The first part features a spoken rendition of Allen Ginsberg's poem "America" woven into the fabric of the music, the texture of which also reflects Ginsberg's lifelong devotion to Buddhism. Ginsberg's poem is a profound, yet humorous, expression of his disappointment and anger over the disparity between America the ideal and America the reality. For those who, like me, are feeling that same disappointment and anger more than ever these days, this poem, written in 1956, is still right on time. Part two of the suite is my musical response, an expression of hope ... what other choice do we have? OK, enough pontification for now ... Actually, I'm celebrating another anniversary on Sunday: my 52nd. I'd love to see every one of you, or even every other one of you, come out and help me get my birthday on. Please, no presents, just your presence. (And I don't mean that in the Seinfeldian sense.) Come for the great music, stay for the great hang. By hosting regular performances of new works, we seek to engage the public in the joy of experiencing new music. By joining as a Collective, we aim to create an environment that encourages composers to freely explore new musical territory, hear new works by fellow composers, collaborate in writing and performing, and present these works to an audience. ==================================================================== ***ABSOLUTELY WE WILL SPREAD OUR GROOVE AND INTERNATIONAL FEELING*** (As always, if you are receiving this and don't want to, or are not receiving this and do want to, or are receiving duplicates, or are receiving duplicates, please let me know.) ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2005 #429 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
