Hi Head, Didn't you know it was recently red ribbon week and the kids in kindergarten learned to say no to drugs. Hope you didn't fall off the ladder looking at the blue sky and flying high on your drugs as you painted your barn. Just say "no." The day is too beautiful for drugs. I love all the analysis going on about "Amelia"...and I agree with the themes previously mentioned. But is there maybe one more thing that Joni was secretly conveying which we haven't covered? Alarm to me means an impending crisis, and false alarm is a common phrase women say when they miss their, well you know, their monthly thing. I think Joni may have been having to deal with this possibility of being "grounded" by a child as opposed to being free to fly, seeking higher achievement, go where no human has gone before, etc... and all this reflection gave fodder to the song. Of course, it was a false alarm after all. Just my .02. I could kick myself because I recently got a new DVD recorder and I was going to record the episode as well as "Grey's Anatomy," which I also like, and I timed it wrong, so I wound up not recording it. But we can catch it again on the re-runs and also when the 2nd Season comes to DVD. And yes, Jerry, I must admit that it is one of the better shows on these days. Now that "Six Feet Under" is gone, I'm searching for a new favorite. I do love Sandra Oh on "Grey's Anatomy," (who also had a part on an episode of "Six Feet Under"). You may remember her too from HBO's "Arliss" as the crazy secretary. Take care - Gary mia ortlieb wrote: > < > There was just a Joni mention on "Desperate Housewives." >> > > Gary, I watched it too. Amelia and Icarus both inspire us, yet both ultimately fell. Their dichotomies make them perfect for Joni's abiding preoccupation with paradox. She doesn't really think that striving is stupid; there's more to it than that. (Who wants to list her acts of moxy and bravado?) If you're a type A personality, you don't have any choice but to push yourself. Sometimes your wings melt or you miss your runway but you try again, as long as you have breath. You can ponder the danger inside the ambition but ultimately you'll take flight again and again, as if you are destined for challenge. It's Joni's sarcastic, bleak, but cathartic way of saying, "You fell but you will try again, although you feel like death right now." All the best, Jim PS, She has lots of Ingmar >Bergman's Nordic blues>. I guess everyone already know that in "Talk To Me", Joni's referring to a Swedish film director. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingmar_Bergman There's one that's not yet in the Glossary, Les. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Nov 2005 16:08:21 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: kindergarten, njc I used to get a laugh when they'd do the Red Ribbon thing at work, you could look out into the smokers' lounge at everyone puffing away with their "Say No to Drugs" ribbon pinned on. You said, >I was struck by the formal change of perspective from the first to the last verse - from looking up at the jets to looking down from the jets.> You may not even be aware of how cool that observation is! Lindsay Moon transcribed this for Les' JMDL Library: > (MARCH 12, 1967 INTERVIEW WITH ED Sciaky): ED Sciaky: Want to do some of the requested songs? JONI MITCHELL: Let's see. What have we got here? "Night in the City," "Circle Game" -- oh, "From Both Sides, Now." I'm really glad somebody requested that, because that's a very new song, and I've been driving everybody crazy by playing it -- ES: Which one? Which one? JM: -- twice and three times a night. It's called "From Both Sides, Now." ES: I haven't heard that one. JM: I'll play that one first. It -- I should tell people a little bit about it. I was reading a book, and I haven't finished it yet, called "Henderson the Rain King." And there's a line in it that I especially got hung up on that was about when he was flying to Africa and searching for something, he said that in an age when people could look up and down at clouds, they shouldn't be afraid to die. And so I got this idea 'from both sides now.' There are a lot of sides to everything, and so the song is called "From Both Sides, Now." > We've all noticed that Joni conjures the past by mentioning the Cactus Tree Motel but I think you've unearthed another gem. In Amelia, I think she's building on "From Both Sides, Now", her first song inspired by the duality of flight / failure. Well done. Thanks and congratulations. All the best, Jim Here's the post in its entirety: > From: djp Subject: Re: what was just a false alarm? I love the dream image at the end: 747s over geometric farms. I've always loved the sense it gave me of solid, aloof, comprehensive, perspective on vast landscapes. (Of course, and again, a false alarm) As I was singing this in the shower yesterday, I was struck by the formal change of perspective from the first to the last verse - from looking up at the jets to looking down from the jets. Then I realized that nowhere do the lyrics really specify the perspective of the last vision. She's not really looking down, she's embodying the whole scene. anyway... I also find this song impossible to sing (not that that stops me). So much of the depth is in the instrumentals. djp> ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Nov 2005 21:33:57 -0500 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu, Lama" Subject: RE: djp discovers ANOTHER layer, was: what was just a false alarm? 100% JC I meant: > In > Amelia, I think she's building on "From Both Sides, Now", her > first song inspired by the duality of flight / death. ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2005 #427 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
