Though such facts don't have bearing on whether or not one likes an artist's sound - it is revealing in a way, of how illusory things are in the music "biz" when it was revealed a year or so ago that numerous elements of Nellie McKay's bio were fabricated - at the time she was being billed as 19 she was actually 23 (making her now 24 or 25) - which, of course, is still very young; the effort to conceal her true age, to add to an appearance of precocious talent, is just typical of a crazy industry in which "perception is reality" is a central tenet! peace to all this Remembrance Day! cheers, Adrian ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Nov 2005 06:30:18 EST From: ROBMSTEEN@aol.com Subject: Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2005 #317 Re: Stones/Coyote Connection A couple of us Melanie fans have decided that, if you listen with even half an ear to Ms Safka's Centre of Your Circle from Gather Me (1971), you can hear the Black Crow (1976)/Don Juan's Reckless Daughter riff in all its prototype glory. OOOOOh the way that one starts out, it practically gives you the blues if you don't have them yet. its a chuggin steamroller for sure..its runs me over and leaves me flat on the ground saying "dang, what the heck was that?". In a good way! Thank you. : -) - ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Michael O'Malley" Oh Marianne! This has got to be Janis' very best song. Does it get any better than this? I've loved this tune since I was a teenager. Have you heard Sarah Jane Morris' cover. It's quite good, in a hand-clappin-country-kinda-way. Heavy work weekend coming up and grocery shopping done. Thinking of little as I walked into the place. From the loudspeaker could hear 'they pave paradise and put up a parking lot." Felt good, like a friend there waiting for me. Wondered if others felt that way and if Joni sometimes wonders about those who consider her a friend, even from the JMDL. mack np: phoebe snow ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Nov 2005 23:59:09 EST From: Bobsart48@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni and the Dick Cavett DVD Set I realize I am about a week late to this topic, but I thought it worth noting that when I saw Dick Cavett appearing on one of the various talk shows (mandatory self promotion tour) the segment he led with was Joni's performance (Chelsea morning, I think). The vote, 49 to 42, on an amendment to a military budget bill by Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, comes at a time of intense debate over the government's treatment of prisoners in American custody worldwide, and just days after the Senate passed a measure by Senator John McCain banning abusive treatment of them. If approved in its current form by both the Senate and the House, which has not yet considered the measure but where passage is considered likely, the law would nullify a June 2004 Supreme Court opinion that detainees at Guantanamo Bay had a right to challenge their detentions in court. Nearly 200 of roughly 500 detainees there have already filed habeas corpus motions, which are making their way up through the federal court system. As written, the amendment would void any suits pending at the time the law was passed. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Nov 2005 01:32:27 -0500 From: kjhsf@aol.com Subject: Re: (NJC) Moving to the "best" coast Lori- I lived in SF for years before moving back to Ohio. I need to start work December 1st or sooner. Mary will stay behind to sell the house, and will join me after that happens. Most of this was driven by our desire to live closer to Mary's family, but some of it is due to my own desire for a dramatic change, and I think this move will fit *that* bill! For the time being, I'll be staying with Mary's mom in Sacramento some of the time (which is at least an hour and a half away), and in San Francisco with a friend (and her hubby and 3 kids) some of the time. However, if anyone has leads on a room or small (affordable?) apartment that I can rent short-term, I will greatly appreciate that information! Looking forward to traveling in some vehicle ... Thanks, all!!
