I need to start work December 1st or sooner. Mary will stay behind to sell the house, and will join me after that happens. Most of this was driven by our desire to live closer to Mary's family, but some of it is due to my own desire for a dramatic change, and I think this move will fit *that* bill! For the time being, I'll be staying with Mary's mom in Sacramento some of the time (which is at least an hour and a half away), and in San Francisco with a friend (and her hubby and 3 kids) some of the time. However, if anyone has leads on a room or small (affordable?) apartment that I can rent short-term, I will greatly appreciate that information! Looking forward to traveling in some vehicle ... Thanks, all!! It was funny as hell, he waited about 30 seconds with people shouting out practically every song in his catalogue, and then in his inimitable style, said "OK, I think I've got one". I was pondering a song the other day that I love - get together - and having known that joni sang it sometime in her early years I went looking for the transcription on the JMDL. I was prompted to go looking cos i caught Lizz wright singing it in her concert set here in Brighton last week and i also know the youngbloods version and my personal favourite - the carpenters on their ticket to ride album. Now to the question. Did Joni do a different jonified version of the song and if so where can i get to hear it? I tried and tried to play the version on the list but for the life of me cant get it to fit the melody i know. Any ideas. I ask because they're playing this on the radio right now and, when it first began, I could have sworn that the whiny discordant sound right at the start is the same one that Joni uses at the start of "Harry's House" (HOSL version). The sound that, to me, has always sounded exactly like "Heatwaves on the runway, as the wheels touch down." It has that hot, warped kind of sound. Hmm, I wonder. There's also a Rolling Stones song that starts off with chords that sound like the ones at the beginning of Coyote, but I'll be damned if I can remember what Stones song it is that I'm thinking about. I guess this isn't all that surprising - Keef uses the open G tuning a lot (but Coyote isn't in open G, is it? - never mind!) Hi Sunday night there were quite a few cars burning less than a mile from my place, and I live in the center. The french media isn't giving the true figures, as always. They mention a few hundred cars torched when the true figure is 4700. So ironically we watch CNN & the BBC for better news. The left has been pathetic, all they talked about is for Sarkozy (the tough Interior Minister) to resign, which is really not the answer and would give a sense of victory to rioters. At the end of the day the true winner will be the National Front, whose agenda is to throw immigrants and their children out of France (jews come next in line after the arabs). They already came in 2nd in the last presidential race. Personally I respect Sarkozy. Last year he was in a tv debate with Le Pen (National Front founder) who asked him whether he had 1 parent who was an immigrant. Sarkozy replied : < you're wrong, both of my parents were immigrants. > The latest theory in well-informed circles is that the riots were a planned effort from the maffia and muslim organizations, to show who's controlling the streets. We should have curfews beginning on wednesday. I sort of felt alone at work today. So few people there understand! A few friends sent emails acknowleding the day, which was nice, but my co-workers were largely clueless. A few were cool though....when I first walked in to the office this morning, I challenged our secretaries and student workers: "Guess whose birthday is today?" And Mary, bless her soul, piped up: "Joni Mitchell's?" Bingo, Mary! I really enjoyed John Rose's radio show today, though -- for four whole hours! Thank you John, that was GREAT! It was hard to work, trying to concentrate on listening. I sent him an email request (pasted below), and he played all five! I heard him play two for Stuart (do we know Stuart?) and one for "Michael in New Orleans", which certainly made me smile. (Chinese Cafe/Unchained Melody, it was) It's a small Joni world after all! I may have missed some moments or songs, because occasionally I had to leave the office or answer the phone. Quelle BOTHER! - ----------- Hi John: How wonderful that you are doing this! Your show is on my computer as I write from the University of Connecticut. I'd love to hear any of the following: - -- Hejira - -- Blue - -- See You Some Time - -- Jericho - -- Judgement of the Moon and Stars (...."and you know there may be more!") Happy birthday, Joni! You are Queen Undisputedly of Mind Beauty! Thanks, John. Peace, Patti from UConn and the JMDL - ---------- As I said, I was thrilled to hear all of them. I got really choked up at Hejira, and Jericho, and Blue just blew me away. I was fighting back tears at my desk. You know how Blue can do that to you. As each song came on, I'd let out an "OOOH!" or an "OH MY GOD!" and my co-workers in the adjacent offices just kind of ignored me. In fact, I heard Mary whisper to one professor who came to see me: "I wouldn't go in there if I were you." "Why?", asked Franco. Mary said: "It's Joni Mitchell's birthday!" LOL...they KNOW. Oh well, I guess I'll just talk to Franco tomorrow! My best to all of you on this high holy day, and special thanks to Les who makes this communing possible. Bonne anniversaire, Notre Dame! Je m'abaisse devant votre grandeur. Merci mille fois, beaucoup. Love, Patti P. Patti, your "Parlette's syndrome" has hit an all-time high in virulence. You have brought new meaning to the term "OCD". Now L'Hommedieu: Smart women rock. I've heard that song on the radio twice and I agree- it's very funny and true. In later verses he goes through some amazing gymnastics to make the rhymes with poly-syllabic vocabulary and ever more exotic references. He's the next Joni Mitchell. :) np: country radio in Dayton, OH.
