This is the one I've had in my head since I first started doing these. It's a little homage to both joni and Peter Gabriel - another artist I've been a fan of for a long time. You guessed it - it's My Secret Place. I hope you all like this one. I didn't realise that when my brother made it for me from old video tapes I had, he'd actually put (what I thought was) the long lost Nine Network's Today Show interview on it. Woohoo! I'm not sure if it was the same year but, Joni has to my knowledge, only ever been to Australia once to perform and once to promote (it turns out) Night Ride Home. The quality of the recording is poor, coming from videotape and the show looks very dated to me. That may just be because I remember the show and it's still on with different hosts. The presenters and interviewer (never seen her on TV since) look terribly uninterested and even say some crass things - George Negus (at the end of the interview): "Joni Mitchell. She's always been a bit of a cult singer with a cult following". Liz Hayes (Co-host) Looks pretty unimpressed with that comment. Joni is, as expected, the star of the interview. I'm not surprised she never came back for another one. She holds her own. The questions, themselves, are not bad. They lead her into talking about her career, her impressions of fans, how she writes songs and the album. The highlight is that she performs too. She performs the song, Number One with a 12 string (I think). She is dressed very stylishly and looks relaxed. I'll take a couple of screen shots soon and hopefully, they will be put up on the website. I'm trying to find a way to extract the video to make available to everyone. I could use some help. If anyone knows how to extract a piece of video from a DVD using a Mac, I would really appreciate it. Maybe even extract the audio of Joni singing, Number One would be good too. Oh yeah, there's even a short clip from the video of My Secret Place which is where I got the shots for the desktop pic that I just made. More to come. It's the same shell game they play here with the United Way campaign. I refuse to donate because they fund the Boy Scout who officially discriminate against gays. They allow you to target your dollars to another group, but then they just used their dollars to up the funding of the Boy Scouts. I just write them a letter and tell them I am directly donating to one of their charities, usually an AIDS group. It always ticks them off. They once wrote to me and told me the Boy Scouts are a private group and are allowed to legally discriminate. I wrote back and told them my dollars are equally private and I would donate as I saw fit. Jerry > Patti get your kids out of that country now!!! In fact, it's refreshing to know that people can have different opinions about so many things. I've had my eyes opened to many different views since being on this list, and I'm grateful for it. As far as guns go, I understand the need to have shotguns/rifles if you live on a ranch or farm where you sometimes have to deal with marauding coyotes, or where you hunt for food and not for sport, but I find the handguns issue - the so-called right to bear arms being interpreted as the right to carry a hand-gun to defend self against other people who apparently always mean harm and all have guns too, is a recurring theme with Brian, and I wonder just what he's really afraid of. In most cases, I just delete these kinds of posts without reading them, because (a) I have no interest in that sort of thing and (b) there are certain issues where people are never going to agree; therefore what's the point of discussing it at all? The Middle-East theme comes up from time to time (in this case, not the Middle-East, but what's going on in France right now). I stay right out of that, because I don't know anything about the causes, and I certainly don't have any solutions to that. Solutions to long-term animosity between various groups of people can only be arrived at by cooperation between those groups, and it will be a very long process. There surely are reasons beyond the accidental (or perhaps not) electrocution of a couple of young people (who may or may not have been doing some kind of crime) fleeing from the police (who may not actually have been chasing them) in a suburb of Paris that have now provoked riots elsewhere in France. I can certainly understand why Laurent would have such a strong reaction to what's happening in France, but, as is usually the case with these things, it is most likely a small minority of people who are doing these things, or who are stirring up those who would rather just go on about their daily lives. It's too bad that people are raised to hate one another for all the wrong reasons, and it goes back to the song from South Pacific that Bob Muller quoted recently: You have to be taught Before it's too late. Before you are six or seven or eight to hate all the people your relatives hate. All of the really negative things (but many of the positive ones too) that we learn about one another are learned at a very early age, and those prejudices are the most difficult to overcome, because they're in us almost at the cellular level. It takes a lot of effort and will to even recognize this, and most people are too tired, or too busy, or sometimes too lazy and too stupid to get past that, and so we end up with religious and ethnic wars, homophobia, and all of the other weird prejudices that people have. - --- Jerry Notaro wrote: > I have had dealings and communications with both > Brian and Laurent. Hi Michael, I'm a little behind on digests but your story caught my eye! My goodness!!! Thanks! Sherelle Michael wrote: Here's a little story from my day. Riding home on my bike after work today, about 4:15, start of the rush hour, the same route I take every day, I came across a surprising sight. I saw a man walking towards me, on the opposite sidewalk, with a very purposeful gait, wearing nothing but a blank expression on his face. No socks, no shoes, no watch, no nothing. Not a stitch. I was stunned. In his late 30's, considerably overweight, dark curly hair. I thought, oh no, what's this guy doing? I got off my bike to watch his progress. He reached the streetcorner, a busy intersection. People just kept kept moving along, like everything was OK. Something so profoundly human and simple about the situation made it completely unthreatening, but I was worried for his health and safety. We're talking, like, 8 degrees C here (about 45F). As I popped into a store and asked the clerk to call 911, the police arrived (two young women!) and followed him into the local church! All three stepped out a few seconds later and the man was asked to sit in the cruiser while one of the women retrieved an aluminum blanket from the car trunk. No resistance whatsoever. Wow. It was quite surreal, seeing someone acting so normal, when in reality he was completely unhinged. My partner, who works in mental health, said he was probably psychotic, acting out an episode. Apparently walking around naked is not so uncommon with these cases. Lordy lordy. So, what's been going down in your neighborhood lately ? LOL! I love the delicious bitchiness of that. That's my main complaint against most of today's "idols" and pop singers. They mistake weird vocal and physical histrionics for emotional depth and so, apparently, do their legions of fans. I guess we both like to stir shit, the only difference is I think Brian won't admit that he prefers his shit stirred by other people. That is his problem and I hope he faces it someday so he can stir up his own. As much as I do enjoy these discussions and find them intellectually challenging , especially when Dear Mike puts the finger where it hurts. Still i do < get it > that the List is not a middle east forum. Since I'm neither bored nor bitter, I try not to initiate these topics. At least not anymore since that fateful letter I posted in september 2001 which Azeem will never let anybody forget. I'd much rather talk about music related topics, but whenever there is a statement on the middle east I disagree with, if I happen to read it I'll comment. Maybe it was a coincidence but I did respond to Azeem's post a day or 2 before Brian's bait. I guess this crap is recurrent and it rises up every so often, here there and everywhere. So who's really to blame ? Laurent PS : Mike your post is great but I wish to clarify 1 point: the french riots are not done by < arab immigrants > but mostly by french born citizens of arab origin. First of all, I recommend her to us, appreciating Joni's work as we do . Check it out, at least. The compilation 'The Whole Story' is perhaps the best place to start, and there's an excellent video as well. (Kate is very visual/dramatic/dance, and this starts to show it off.) The most amazing concert footage is certainly that from Hammersmiith Odeon (in I think 79-80) part of her only tour ever. But I have story! Up in western Maine (Rangeley) there survives a museum honoring the memory of 'crackpot' natural scientist Wilhelm Reich, who moved to America in the 30's to escape, basically, all politics in Europe, left and right. The cover art of her compilation, and the video of the song 'Cloudbusting' and the song itself, all relate directly to Reich, and is set in place resembling, if not actually, Reich's castle/laboratory in the hill country of western Maine. In the video, Kate plays Peter Reich (the son, who is the narrative voice in the song) and Donald Sutherland (a curious, but not a bad cast) plays Reich. In the video of Cloudbusting, the 'men in black' are coming to take him away (1953, the McCarthy era) and he was imprisoned by the Feds for contempt of court for refusing to defend himself of charges that he violated interstate commerce statutes. HE DIED IN PRISION 18 MONTHS LATER. TONS OF HIS BOOKS WERE BURNED IN THE FRONT YARD OF HIS LABORATORY/HOME, none of which (the books) had anything to do with the litigation. The FDA wanted him squashed because he was distributing (for a pittance) devices he thought could cure cancer (and really often really seemed to). Booths one sat in. I don't know where Kate Bush picked up on this. For myself, I was intrigued by Reich's story perhaps 35 years ago. There are numerous (rather turgid) books by Reich still in print, most on post-Freudian psychoanalytic theory, but there is also an excellent bio, 'Fury on Earth' by Myron Sharaf. I believe the Cloudbusting apparatus in the Whole Story cover art is actually WWII pre-radar listening devices. They more or less resemble 'orgone projectors' which Reich designed and built to project earthly life energies into the atmosphere to affect weather patterns, create rainfall (which he did on numerous occasions) and stave off saucer attacks (hmmmm....) Anyway, Barb and I are Friends of the Wilhelm Reich Museum (Organon), and are personally acquainted with the Trustees. We have stayed on the grounds many times, in one or the other of Reich's cabins, But to come to the end of very long my story: On one visit years ago, we were paying a visit to the lab and we had the very 'edgy' experience of watching, for first time, the Kate Bush video of 'Cloudbusting' with the Trustee of the Reich Foundation, Mary Higgins, in Reich's laboratory, where the events took place. I recommend a visit here if you are ever in shouting distance of Rangeley, Maine, and enjoy a good conundrum, beautiful scenery, and reminder that truly evil repression of free inquiry and free thinking is not only in our most recent past, but also, here today. As Joni said, >wide, like jazz> (Hi Patti) I recognize the negative connotation inside 'tolerance' but I like the word over 'acceptance' for 3 reasons. 1. It has an instantly recognizable antonym, 'intolerance'. 'Inacceptance' isn't in Merriam-Webster and 'rejection' isn't quite the same. 2. Webster's www.m-w.com thinks that 'patience' is a synonym for 'tolerance'. Patience has a positive connotation but it also has a passive one. I think of 'tolerance' as 'patience' that's been summoned by intellect then willed into action. 3. I like the fact that there's a bit of a negative connotation. It challenges the reader to think again, overlook a minor discomfort, to change the channel. i.e. "There's always the delete key." When I silently delete a post, it isn't because of 'acceptance'; it's 'tolerance'. I suppose it depends entirely on the context. I suppose the word can stand if you're talking about a heated political debate. The context I object to is when someone's race or gender or sexuality is the issue at hand. To say you tolerate something as fundamental as someone's gender or the color of their skin or their sexual preference is insulting, in my opinion. What is there about these things that anyone feels they have to tolerate? They just are. You don't tolerate or not tolerate facts. You either accept them or reject them. Climbing down off the soapbox now.
