The will to survive is very strong with him. I'm so glad! Both of you be strong and remember that you are both in my prayers. It's hard for you being the support and it's hard for Robert who is struggling to get better. Thank you so much for sharing your good news with us! After hovering near death for several days last week, Robert woke up (to everyone's surprise) last Thursday morning, signaled he wanted the tubes removed from his throat and then insisted on calling me. When the phone rang, my heart fell, but when I heard his voice, I wept with relief. He's making slow but steady progress. He stood up for the first time yesterday, and took a walk around the ward this morning before I got there. His lungs have a way to go, but we got our first good kidney news this morning -- they've finally started to budge (they'd been in shutdown for over a week). He's off oxygen almost all the time now, he's coherent almost all the time, and he's got his short-term memory back, and well, barring any unexpected emergencies, he'll eventually be coming home. Hard to believe, given where he was a week ago, but he's a stubborn as I am, and I pulled out of a similar tailspin nine years ago. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Oct 2005 09:59:12 -0500 From: "Donna Binkley" Subject: Re: Update on Robert 10/26/05 Dear Walt, This is great news! And now: A very sincere thank you for the support, prayer, positive thoughts, cheerleading and all other forms of help we've received this week. A very special merci to Lisa Lee, who drove all the way from Sacramento to help me do 40,000 lbs of laundry, and then continued cleaning house after we got home and I collapsed on the bed. Yay, Lisa! What it is referring to is the ongoing rivalry between Niagara Falls, NY, (US), and Niagara Falls, ONT, (CANADA), but naturally that made me think of Joni. Did anyone ever consider that another meaning to BSN could be the longing for one's home country while at the same time discovering the excitement and joy of a new land, and therefore being conflicted and harmonious all at once? This particular Joni reference was especially clever, I thought, because just like there are two Niagara Falls: a US one and a Canadian one; there are also two (at least) Jonis: a wide-eyed prairie girl (lately revisited) and a hip, savvy Bel Air belle. The mind certainly takes strange bends during mundane tasks like recycling newsprint! Jack (NYC) Ps.
