I just love Marianne's idea of resurrecting one of Joni's songs by synchronising everyone on the list to contact their local radio stations to promote it. Personally, I don't listen to commercial radio (only community radio sometimes) but, I'll be in it. There are hundreds of us here and from all around the world. I'm sure we could carry some weight. We should all come to a consensus on which song. I think we would have more luck if it came from the last compilation album - SOAPG and maybe even get the record company to push some promotion of it, i.e release it as a single. If it's a song that has a video clip, we could also pressure MTV and the other music television channels to play it. How about we flood them with e-mails? And why would I think that the latest in the seemingly never-ending collection is going to be the most popular? Well, let's face it - who DOESN'T like 69? And in this case, it lasts for an hour and 16 minutes - whoo hoo! OK, enough low-brow (at least for the intro) humor, it is with a bulging, throbbing amount of pride that I present this month's volume of Joni covers, and as always I'll begin by saying thanks to the folks who contributed tunage to the compilation: Donna Binkley - thanks Tushie!! Mmmmmmwah! The Magnificent, Magical Monica Cardinale and Doug Meek, he who shall inherit the earth Oh, and I keep meaning to mention the cover artwork, this month's Volume has a nice black and white picture of a serious-looking Joni nestled in a full-color backdrop of clouds. I enjoy making the CD cover for these discs almost as much as I love the covers on the disc, and I always forget to talk about it - so there. And now, let's indulge in some aural pleasures: 1. John Cain - Both Sides Now: We start out with a lovely fingerpicked nylon-string guitar instrumental, hear a bit of it at: http://cdbaby.com/cd/johncain 2. Wheatfield - Conversation: What a great suprise! This Houston area band recorded this originally in the 70's and then re-released it this year, and I'm glad they did - The track builds into a full-blown bluegrass explosion with rockin' mando, banjo, and everything else. Lots of fun, maybe too 'busy' for the purists, but I love it when a band takes a song in a whole new direction like Wheatfield does here live onstage. http://cdbaby.com/cd/wheatfield 3. Judy Collins - That Song About The Midway (Live): Judy sang this on a Mountain Stage performance about a year ago (October 2004), previewing it before she released it on her 2005 CD. She definitely still has it, sounds great to me. 4. Elisabeth Lohninger Quartet - Both Sides Now: Originally from Austria, now residing in NYC, jazz vocalist Lohninger sounds great with a classic jazz trio behind her. Very mellow, judge for yourself: http://cdbaby.com/cd/elohninger 5. Carole Kai - Raised On Robbery: Doncha just hate it when an ROR cover cuts out the whole son-of-a-bitch verse? Makes for a pretty short track, 2 minutes in the case of Hawaiian singer Carole Kai, who takes some other liberties with the lyrics as well, plus she adds nothing to Joni's version, excepting maybe a brief fuzztone guitar solo. 6. Bobby Vee - (You're So Square) Baby, I Don't Care: From his Buddy Holly tribute. Pretty much what you'd expect. 7. Bobby Vernon - Both Sides Now: Boy, when this one starts out it sure does sound like Johnny Cash, both in the guitar styling and in the vocal, then it gets a bit cheesy-precious. Don't know much about Bobby Vernon, sounds like he's out on the prairie somewhere. 8. David Lahm - Ladies Of The Canyon: From his follow-up CD "More Jazz Takes On Joni Mitchell", this is a beautiful arrangement and eloquently played recording. David works within and around Joni's chord changes, embellishing and illuminating simultaneously. 9. Derek Brimstone - Chelsea Morning: From an early-seventies obscure English folk LP, a little scratchy but lively, reminds me of the guitar stylings of our own Willy. 10. The Barbers & Bishops - Jingle Bells/River: This is different! From Haarlem in The Netherlands, these guys mostly sing medieval ballads and sacred classical music, and you can tell from this version that they are very formal in their singing, but their harmonies are extremely tight and they actually sing 2 verses of Jingle Bells before they transition into River, very different, and again for that they get big points from me. 11. Art Reyes - Both Sides Now: Sounds more like a she, but definitely a he. Lots of Wayne Newton-ish feeling to this one, check out 2 minutes worth at: http://cdbaby.com/cd/artreyes 12. Vocalogy - Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: This vocal group (not acapella but more focused on the vocal harmonics than with the band) sent me an early demo of their recording of this song, the final product is fleshed out a bit more and Dry Cleaner is certainly a good candidate for this kind of vocal treatment. http://cdbaby.com/cd/vocalogy 13. Ulla Lindhart & Comely Grace - Little Green: A beautiful song, and a pretty cover with just voice & piano. Ms. Lindhart's voice reminds me of our own Jenny Goodspeed, with that same sense of fragility & tenderness. http://cdbaby.com/cd/lindhardt 14. Lisa Otey and the Desert Divas - River: Taken from a live CD, Lisa & Company keep dropping octaves which is a bit unsettling, and she doesn't make any kind of emotional investment either which makes it pretty so-so. 15. Julie Bonk - Both Sides Now: Having taught piano to Norah Jones, Julie steps out of teacher mode and places herself in the spotlight and rightfully so, her playing is lovely and the arrangement of Joni's franchise is original. Very nice stand-up bass solo work as well here. http://cdbaby.com/cd/juliebonk 16. Melissa Sweeney - Sex Kills: Appropriate that Volume 69 has our first cover of Sex Kills, and also appropriate that it follows a good bonk. This is a torrid jazz workout on the TI track, and once again puts a whole different spin on it, adding an almost Steely Dan undertone to it. 17. Nicole Kramer - Help Me: From Rewind Volume 4, a series that presents covers of old soul, pop and funk tunes. Surprisingly, this is not drastically different than Joni's, the hip-hoppy drums are a little higher in the mix. Still, if this kind of thing helps the next generation turn on to Joni, more power to 'em. 18. Christina Branco - A Case Of You: From Portugal and inspired by Diana Krall's interpretation rather than Joni's (why do I get the feeling I'll see a lot more that fall into that category?) Still, original and lovely in its own way. 19. Home - Both Sides Now: Now HERE'S an original take on the franchise! Electronica, trippy and though it never gets past the first verse it is a very compelling track. It's like if you were to take the first verse of BSN and make a hypnotic mantra out of it. Very cool, unique and innovative. And there you have it - the give and take of Volume 69, tasty and totally satisfying. If you're interested in getting a copy of your own to enjoy in the privacy of your own abode, let me know. And now if you'll excuse me, for some strange reason I feel like having a cigarette. I think they just wanted us to walk around blindly touting that teaching Intelligent Design was a good thing. As far as I'm concerned, it does both science and religion a disservice. Intelligent design does not discredit evolution. Evolution demonstrates the processes of life (this can be observed under the microscope), but does not demonstrate the beginnings, the mystery, that set the wheels in motion. This is where religion comes in. You can still have an intelligent creator who designed evolution! Intelligent design does not even support God. The intelligent designer could be a bunch of intelligent aliens who are using humans in some sort of weird experiment. So the whole theory (if you can even call it a theory) is useless, and should not be taught in our schools. I feel bad for the science teachers who are being forced to teach such crap! Well, I am home today trying to chill out and get last minute things done. I'm going to take a friend's advice and just roll with it. I have a very good band, very good back up singers so I will have to just let it all happen. For any Joni people attending, I apologize ahead of time for the lack of Joni content. I was going to do my version of "Woodstock" and had given the song and the chord chart to the guitarist months ago. With all the material the new guitarist already had to learn, we didn't have time to work on the song. I'm a bit bummed about it but am going to go on anyway. Most of you already have the demo version of the CD (which is the same). What I am trying to do is set myself up for the release of the second CD...as soon as I record it! Ha! Ha! You know I always operate on a wing and a prayer! So keep the good thoughts coming because I definitely need them for tomorrow! I don't think I've looked as forward to a Sunday and a "day after" as much as I am looking forward to this one!, Love, Sherelle - ----------- Wow, Sherelle! I am so excited for you! Yesterday as I was turning the calendar over to October (like the turn of page!) I remembered that October 1st is your big concert, and I made a mental note to write to you today. Then I went to order my Joni stickers and magnets from Patti Witten's store (Thank you, Patti!!!), and then went to CD baby to buy some of her CDs, and then I checked YOU out and bought yours. To quote you: "The timing couldn't have been more perfect as the concert is tomorrow!" Wow is right! I had NO IDEA it was the first day it went on sale so I feel like it was some special special Joni synchronicity that brought me there. I also bought Paz's friend Jack's CD (1. because I like it, and 2. as a show of loving support for him.) (On a personal note, I'm also thinking that listening to other artists may help my JMOCD...lol!) But back to you....yes, you! Today, it all comes down to YOU! You really don't need our confidence baby, and the gift of our extra time, because you have your own, but take some nonetheless. It's a warm arrangement, non? Oui, oui, madame de la musique! (There's a little encouragment for you, French-style.) I admire your creativity and your go-for-the-gusto! You go, girl! You'll be greeeaaaattttt! It seems like many dim months ago that I wrote to this list asking for confidence and encouragement when I had to give a speech at UConn in front of hundreds of people, a farewell speech about someone I care very deeply for. So many of you wrote back, and it really helped. I am NOT a public speaker and have never even held a microphone before. I was so nervous! But all your advice and encouragment must have really bolstered me, because within 5 seconds of getting that microphone in my hand, I was in the ZONE! I was totally relaxed and "on" and I nailed it. I even had 'em laughing and crying (you know it's the same release, of course). I never felt so good in my life. So, dear Sherelle, that is what I wish for you tonight -- that you will be in your own beautiful zone and spreading it out like blazes all across the room. No, all across the SKY....even way up here to CT where you will get a round resounding. When the spotllight comes on, it will not be empty, it will be filled with you up there and your musicians getting everyone to feel like "that". So light up the night as we know you will! Do what you love! I will be sooo with you, my friend of spirit! Bon courage et bonne chance et bonne chanteusing! Love, Patti P. P.S. Anyone have any thoughts on > this? Can anyone out there guess what I sound like? Scary question... Interesting. Hmmm. Mike in Barcelona- I had not even thought about the Isle accent that would be there until I read Bob's reply. I have always pictured Mike as a man's man, tough, and with a deep voice, resonating. Perhaps about 5'8", muscular, and could see him as a sailor. Bob- Have seen pics of Bob so have an idea of structure. Would think he is in good shape as well but not as beefy. His voice, also deep but with a baritone thrown in for good measure. 5'7' approximately. Have heard Bree's and Marianee's voices so can't speculate on them. Haven't seen Marianne that I can remember but would imagine her as very pretty, a lady, quiet. Bree is as pretty in pics as she is in imagination. Kakki- I think of Kakki as somewhat of a sophisticate and her voice fits with that image. Smooth, southern california, lilting at times but always cool and dreamy. Have seen pics of her as well. Ken- have seen his picture as well. A cutie pie. His voice would probably be a baritone base with lighter edges when excited. Surely soothing, like his words and his persona. Wally- Seen pics of him too. His voice I would imagine would be lighter and I think he would have a bit of a homosexual twang, the latter not being any kind of slight since I am a pink team player. Mark- I see Mark as tall and think of him as having a deep voice as well. Well-built and authoritarian in appearance, one of those people that always seem to have the power jobs. Mags- have seen a headshot of her. Beautiful woman. I can hear her voice as very ladylike and if one could turn vision into sound, very picturesque. Sweet. Very fond of this woman in what little I know of her. Gary- another pic I have seen. Hear his voice as being lighter but smooth. Have picked up that he is sensitive, kind, and caring. Kate- hear her voice as being deeper and for some reason think it might be gravelly at times. I like gravelly. Catherine- perhaps the voice of a college instructor that teaches English. Even, clear. Les- definitely a deeper voice that stays deep throughout. One of those boys that didn't play with me and always seemed to be in groups. Rather fun to speculate and probably right about none of it. The end result being that I have love for all the folks here. mack ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 01 Oct 2005 22:16:11 -0400 From: "Marianne Rizzo" Subject: [none] which Bob said this. . Thanks for the thoughtful points on Intelligent Design: <> It's Intelligent Design's very circularity that makes it, as one scientist put it, "so bad, it's not even wrong." A theory is only a scientific theory if it can be *disproven*. Anything that can be neither proven nor disproven is an article of faith, not science. I have absolutely no objection to ID's being taught in school, perhaps in a course about religion or sociology -- but it doesn't pass muster as a *scientific* theory. The late and much-missed Stephen Jay Gould often made the point that there need be no enmity between science and religion. Religion will always have a place as a source for moral/ethical/spiritual guidance, no matter how "big" science gets; but historically -- and now -- the top dogs of some religions put dogma before spirituality, and they fight through intimidation (or often, much worse) anything or anyone whom they feel threatens the dogma. So telling people that they should teach ID *in science classes* as an "alternate theory" to evolution because the latter "threatens" the belief that the big kahuna in the sky is the ultimate creative source of all existence is wrong because (a) evolution does no such thing and (b) ID can not be proven or disproven, and therefore is not a scientific theory. In the past (and in some cultures, still) religion was the source of explanation for things that could not (yet) be explained by other means -- this in addition to being a source of spiritual succor and ethical guidance. As science as we know it has begun to explain more and more of the physical world, admittedly the explanatory role of religion has been diminished; an established reltion has two options: fight science, or accept science's (admittedly sometimes tentative or incomplete) truths and emphasize religion's role as a provider of ethical/moral/spritual guidance. Ultimately, the fight to teach ID as science depresses me because it's such a waste of time and energy, and it distracts from the real job of educating our kids. And this and other attempts by the current administration to blur or dismantle the wall between science and religion -- and church and state -- makes me wonder just how near or far we are from becoming a theocracy. Which is fine as long as everyone belongs to one of *my* relgions.
