[njc] I woke up this morning, and turned on the TV to see the Robert's confirmation vote...but instead I stumbled upon a local access TV station which was showing, of all things, a clip of John Kelly at Wigstock 200?, probably 2004?. I only caught Rainy Night Priest, and Woodstock (errr. Wigstock). The back up singer's name was "Melanie" and ... the crowd went totally beserk, in a good way, over his performance. The video was good, the audio was so-so. What a trip.... Just thought I'd share. ~Richard ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Sep 2005 10:50:05 -0700 From: "jeff t." Subject: Dar Williams Echoes NJC Hi All, I was wondering if anyone might be able to help with a most trivial mystery. On Dar Williams' My Better Self, there is a track titled Echoes. It appears to be written recently, and all research thus far points to it being a brand new cut written for her. Jules Shear, Rob Hyman, and Steward Leman are given credit on the CD. And yet, I can't stop thinking that I've heard it before. A friend agrees (vehemently), and we are stumped. At first I thought Sheryl Crow had recorded it, but I can't track that down. It is reminiscent of a 60's/early 70's tune, but nothing I can remember. The CD was first released in Europe back in February, but I don't think that's it. Maybe it just has a familiar feel to it, or resembles another melody, but I thought I'd give it one last try before I/we get on with our lives. Any insight would be most appreciated, even a "now that you mention it..." Although Some others seem to be able to sing directly from their Souls (Both Janis Ian and Don McLean come to mind), Joni is so Boldly Honest that she Actually forces you to turn away. I Believe in our Somewhat Distant Future, Joni's Name will be Spoken in the Same way A Jules Verne, Michelangelo, or Van Gogh are Spoken Today. And for the first time ever, I will have a CD player in my vehicle, so I've a head full of quandary. What CD shall christen this new vehicle? I've narrowed it down to one artiste -- no quandary there! -- but which CD to play? And which SONG? This is a momentous (sp?) decision. I know no one is going to show me everything, for this is a purely personal choice. The old question: which CD would you bring if you were to be stranded on a desert isle? I am bringing Blue, FTR, Hejira, MOA, C & S, and Hissing ("and you know....). I guess we'll see where the wind carries me. I'm also wondering where I can get a "Joni Never Lies" bumper sticker. Doesn't someone here have one on their fridge? I know I saw that once! And I'm contemplating a Joni license plate (although I really can't justify the expense in my heart and mind at this time of man). What does "Joni.1" say to you? Joni is #1, or "I am a Joni one"? To me it says both. Joni-mauling Julius suggested SIQUOMB, which would be lovely, but the state of CT only allows 6 characters. Is anyone here JMOCDed enough to have a Joni plate? It is so gratifying to read a post like this. Not that I worship the ground she walks on, so this is no blind faith, crazed fan rant, but I NEVER grow tired of this woman's music and I know I never will. The other day, someone mentioned having listened to "Barangrill" with new ears, and I totally understand that feeling about so many Joni songs. Even the ones I think I'm tired of, because they've been done and done and done again (you know the ones - "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Both Sides Now") become new again. There are many who say she's the greatest female songwriter, the greatest woman songwriter, but sorry - she is THE best (my not-so-humble opinion, of course). I'm gaining new appreciation for Dylan (sorry, Ashara) but he's never going to do it for me the way Joan does. The woman is a genius, a true woman of heart and mind. Her lyrics are full of intelligence, humour, wisdom and great feeling and her music is unique and complicated as hell, while being eminently singable. It was so great to read about all those rare songs that many of us have never even heard OF, much less heard. If anyone comes across a copy of any of these, please share! And Joni, if you're reading, please release the early songs. They could be your "Songs of Innocence" and "Songs of Experience." I don't give a sh*t whether you do this as a box set or a series of albums - do it your way, but please, do it!
