Yes, I think it's a symptom of something larger. But it's also why I'm the biggest (ok the only) Kevin Millar fan. He comes to the park every day just thrilled to be there. He's the first to say that even "scale" in MLB is a lot of money to him. He just seems to be someone who has never forgotten where he came from and how lucky he is to be where he is. As fo Joe Torre, I just love to watch when the Yankees are losing (especially to the Red Sox.) Torre's chin drops further and further, down to his chest, and he looks up almost through the brim of his cap. Was Ring of Fire: The Johnny Cash Musical Show Hot with Critics? by Broadway.com Staff PS - Ring of Fire (Buffalo) - Jeb Brown - Jarrod Emick - Jason Edwards Ring of Fire: The Johnny Cash Musical Show, developed by Richard Maltby Jr. and William Meade, is the latest jukebox musical headed for Broadway. The show offers a revue of Cash tunes. The tuner, directed by Maltby Jr., is premiering at Buffalo's Studio Arena Theatre with a cast that includes Tony winner Jarrod Emick and Cass Morgan. Did critics think the tuner is hot? Here is a sampling of what they had to say: Richard Ouzounian of Variety: "Surprise, everybody! The jukebox musical is alive and well, thanks to some fresh thinking from the man who virtually invented the form nearly 30 years ago--Richard Maltby Jr. Part of Maltby's savvy is that he just doesn't offer up the Cash hits Aside from content, Maltby shows his skill in the staging of the show, giving it a look quite unlike any other revue Despite the overwhelmingly positive impression the show leaves, there are some issues to be addressed here and during the next stop at the Curran Theater in San Francisco. Too many numbers finish without a satisfactory 'button' There's also a stretch midway through Act I where the normally clear focus gets fuzzy... And finally, the first act could use a much stronger ending But even as it plays right now, Ring of Fire is hot." Richard Huntington of The Buffalo News: "This Studio Arena Theatre world premiere is a fabulous piece of entertainment, a show that gracefully, beguilingly, transcends its own limits at every turn Maltby is something of a magician. By ingenious segues, inspired staging and a highly developed sense of the internal ebb and flow of the music, he creates the happy illusion that there is narrative where there is none Maltby asks his cast to strive not only for musical excellence--the base requirement of any successful musical revue--but to also create a special kind of dramatic harmony among his players. This extraordinary cast delivers on both counts--stunningly." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Sep 2005 17:17:27 -0500 From: Michael Paz Subject: Latest news (NJC) Hi all Still here munching MRE's and trying to stay on course. I have been very busy with a new project we got going. Check out http://www.katrinaspianofund.org All these guys are good friends of mine and asked me to join them in this effort and of course I can't resist to help. I already have many manufacturers interested in helping out. My friend Brian Stoltz finally called me to let me know he is safe, but his main guitars, amps, pedals, are all sitting in about 8 foot of water. He and I share another room in that same building but it is on the 7th floor so that should be ok. If anyone can help out with used instruments or donations they would really appreciate it and not waste. Also if you hear of any Louisiana or Mississippi musicians that are out of work and have lost their instruments please let me know. I sent $400 to Jack today to try and help him out and I thank you all again for the contributions that make this possible for me to do. I have had so many more people I know that have lost homes and assets that it is just mind boggling. I think I need to start a data base so I can remember it all. Just got off the phone with Diamond Dave Whitaker who is a friend of Darice' headed down here to set up housing and kitchens to feed the people. He is suppose to help set up an abandoned Air base near Alexandria. I am gonna pick him up at the airport in Baton Rouge tomorrow and give him a ride to Covington to meet some of his folks. I have to go pick up some construction stuff for my house tomorrow so obviously the Lord is paving the way for it all to happen. I found out that my missing friends from the 9th ward made it out and are in Baton Rouge (Carl Dennis and family), so that is another worry crossed off our list. YaY! I am optimistic that things will get better soon and I am inspired to get to work asap. Several drums are beating and we will see what the future has in store for us. That9s all I have for know for I have to run on to something else. My very best to you all. LMAO! It's what they feed our army guys and send to disaster areas. They have an entrie item and a vegetable in separate pouches, usually some cheese and crackers or jelly or bread. Some kind of drink mix like hot cocoa or orange aid. It also has a bag of condiments including a tiny bottle of tabasco. There is a bag included that you open and put your food that you want to eat hot in. It has a little paper heater that activates by adding a little water. The kids love them. Just think Chef Boy R Dee in the 21st century. The Govt provided us with these as well as water and ice. They pulled out of our neighbourhood yesterday cause services (like groceries) are back. WTF are MREs? Michael may I? : ) Catherine, MREs is an acronyn for "meals, ready to eat." It's various foods that are vacuumed packed in brown or olive drab colored foil. Usually, several different items comprise a meal. The "entree" is often a cream-based or stew sort of things. MREs replaced "C rations" (which replaced or supplemented "K rations"), most of which came in cans and were therefore much heavier. Maybe this has changed, but in 1986 you were not supposed to boil the food in the pouch, as ingesting the ink on the outside of the foil (that identified the contents) would make you very sick, and troops tended to reuse the boiled water for coffee or drinking. I was stationed in Germany when the USAF in Europe made the switch between "C rats" and MREs. Gone was the unappetizing ham & scrambled eggs in a can. It was replaced by freeze-dried sausage in a vacuum packed plastic bag, which was sealed in the aforementioned foil. A step up, believe or not. The best thing about (1986) MREs was the freeze-dried fruit. The worst thing was losing the hockey puck "John Wayne" candy bars, which you got with C rats. MREs did continue the tradition of putting 2 sheets of "John Wayne" toilet paper in the package, though. Not too useful for peeing in the woods, but great for prepping metal before priming. : ) Carry on, Lori ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 00:46:43 -0400 (EDT) From: "walterphil" Subject: buncha joni vids i was at a flea market in collingwood new jersey last weekend, and a seller had a bunch of those bootlegged dvd's/vhs's for $10 bucks a piece a little pricey, but of course several joni's caught my eye, so i bought 2, and i'm sure glad i did the first is a 105 minute video compilation. the best on this one is the 3 times she was on the johnny cash show. the first from 1969. she sings "both sides now" and then "i still miss someone" with johnny. the second (from the same year i believe) she sings "the gallery" followed by "long black veil" with johnny. in both of these she is the pretty banged/long haired/fake eyelash joni. giggly and chatty with johnny, and it is so obvious he is enraptured with her. but the third episode from 1970 is quite a trasformation into the no banged, tanned, blonde eyelash and extremely confident joni. so beautiful, so assured, doing "california," "my old man" (unfinished) then finally "girl from north country" with johnny (as previously discussed this week) these are the best on this dvd, but there is also a super early 1967 joni from take 30 cdc tv doing a ridiculously long monolog followed by "blue on blue." also a nice early "little green" from cafe au go go NYC 1967. the last 4 songs i found interesting also-footage from the san remo festval in italy 1988 where she accepts a song writing award and performs a lovely "nite ride home," "lakota," " hejira," and a wordless "when all the slaves are free" (forgot the title) the second dvd is even more interesting cause it's joni from 65/66 from a canadian tv show called "let's sing out". this has to be seen to be believed, because it is so "mighty wind." the mc is some big eared handsome canadian galloot (oscar brandt) who introduces a young joni anderson! she does (over the corse of 4 shows) "born to take the highway," "blow away the morning dew" (a duet with oscar), "favorite color," and "me and my uncle" (a john phillips song) the later shows she is introduced as joni mitchell, and does "just like me," "urge for going," "night in the city," "blue on blue" (again), and another duet with oscar, "prithee pretty maidens" (gilbert & sullivan). it's great to see her onstage at the beginning of each show singing with the rest of the cast, the silly theme song. wish i could make you all copies. they are pretty great. Off-topic discussion is welcome, but there is a mechanism in place to help those that are not interested in it, and therefore subscribed to the onlyJONI version of the list. All it takes is a little consideration and respect for your fellow readers. From the list charter: "1) ALWAYS USE "NJC" IF APPLICABLE!!!!!: This is THE most important thing you will hear about on this list. What is NJC? It stands for "No Joni Content" and should be used as the first three characters of the subject line of any post you send to the list that contains no Joni Mitchell content. For example, if you are responding to a thread on the virtues of Yanni , the subject line of your post should be labeled something like "NJC - - Yanni is the greatest." This allows those that aren't interested in this topic to skip it or even delete it without reading it. More importantly, the proper function of the onlyJONI list depends on NJC being in the subject line. Majordomo automatically rejects all posts with NJC in the subject - stopping them before they hit the onlyJONI lists. Your proper use of this will keep the onlyJONI people off your back!" http://www.smoe.org/lists/joni.info Again: "More importantly, the proper function of the onlyJONI list depends on NJC being in the subject line.
