After describing his unsuccessful effort to pick up a conversation with Bush--the former First Lady rebuffed each approach with, "I'm through with you"--Franken quotes several unnamed "Washington insiders," both Republicans and Democrats, who thought it was funny that Franken regarded Bush's dismissive attitude of him as a form of kidding. Franken writes that at a Bat Mitzvah in Washington soon after his Barbara Bush encounter, "I kept hearing things like: 'Oh no, she's a horrible bitch.' 'Omigod, she's the worst bitch on earth.' 'She can be very charming, but Barbara Bush is the Queen Bitch.'" Then he writes, "But another, even more interesting, insight came from everyone who knew the Bushes. They all agreed. 'Dubya is her son.' He's mean." This last "insight" leads Franken to the conclusion (with apologies to Mr., Franken for the long quote): "I think we're all too ready to blame Karl Rove, or Dick Cheney, or Ari Fleischer, or Gale Norton, or Donald Rumsfeld, or John Ashcroft when this administration does something despicable. When South Carolinians get push polls saying John McCain fathered an illegitimate black child, you know Karl Rove had something to do with it. But it's really Bush. When our energy policy is set by cronies from the oil, coal, and automobile industries, you can shake your fist at Dick Cheney. But it's Bush. When Ari Fleischer feeds rumors that the Clinton people vandalized the White House, doing $200,000 worth of damage, but months later a GAO report says that ain't true, you can say that Ari Fleischer is a chimp. And he is. But it's Bush. When this administration reinterprets the Clean Water Act to allow polluters to dump into creeks and streams, you can blame Gale Norton or Christie Todd Whitman all you like. But it's Bush. When Donald Rumsfeld refuses to apologize for our military accidentally killing a wedding party of fifty in Afghanistan, you can bet that swaggering callousness emanates from the Oval Office. When an American citizen can be put in prison indefinitely without charges being filed and without access to a lawyer or a judge, you may think 'John Ashcroft is out of control.' And you'd probably be right. But the rest of the time, don't kid yourself. It's Barbara Bush's son." _____________________________ Regarding both Mrs. Bush's recent Marie Antoinette moment and President Junior's frat boy reminiscence of Dubya Gone Wild, capped by his "prayer" that Trent Lott's fabulous house be rebuilt ASAP because he wants to set a spell on his porch, Franken nails it for me : Don't kid yourself ... George is Barbara Bush's son. When Barbara Bush says ''What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas" she's thinking of potentially thousands of new Democrats invading Texas. When she says "And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them'' she betrays her blue blood disconnect from the commoners ... the physical manifestations of their lives sucked, so they must be better off even though the fabric of their lives has been torn to shreds. Although it may be tempting, given her grandmotherly demeanor, to give her the benefit of the doubt, in the face of abundant evidence, demonstrated over and over by members of her family, that would be a mistake. - Fred Simon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Sep 2005 04:06:46 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Another Dog Eat Dog, by Fagen and Becker (njc, really) Hi Walt, You are correct - I did indeed buy that LP (You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It) way back when. Marianne, love your idea about giving our Digest family the welcome to vent a problem and how we all can offer some comfort via a presciption. This will increase our opportunities to bond. Great idea!!! Throughout the day (Sunday) I held hope, prayers, compassion close to my heart for the victims of 9/11....sending out supportive vibes through the cosmic air-ways. Of course everyday, since the ravages of Katrina I've been doing the same. Wish I could add/respond to some of the postings regarding this country and the (lack of) leadership....the insensitivities, as well as acknowledgement to the many heros and those with open and generous hearts. Joni's voice is pretty... I can hear her cowboy up to it --haha OK now I need to hear "I Still Miss Someone!" I had no idea there was more. Rosanne Cash tells an interesting story about the latter in the Tribute to Johnny Cash doc airing today on Trio, I think -- Sept. 12 is the anniversary of his death. He asked her to sing this with him on stage at Carnegie Hall but, she says, she was mad at him for something or other. At the last second she agreed and she said whatever it was all dissolved on stage. There is a video of her version of this song included in the doc. I wonder if she ever saw/heard the duet her dad did w/ Joni. She may have seen it on TV. That's a little eerie don't you think? Maybe just to me since I admire Rosanne very much. Fans of the Cash clan should also see/hear Rosanne's own song "September When It Comes," from CD Rules of Travel. I was thinking about it today, which is also my mother's birthday, another odd twist. It's the only duet she ever recorded with her father for one of her own CDs. Don't you hate to see primadonas (sp)? That's everywhere in professional sports. Look at me. It's sickening. But we have allowed it because we glamorize it. I rarely watch any sports beyond college, and that is just as bad sometimes. Colleges have let their guard down by allowing every personality equality. It puts pressure on the coaches to have to handle these personalities. And if you don't recruit to win, at any cost, it will cost your job. I would hate to coach the NY Yankees for that reason. Highest paid players, expected to win, you're fired. Joe Torre is gone after this year. These egos tear at the fabric of team chemistry, which takes most of the joy out of playing. Just my opinion. Not so for me, I am always surprised/ "The lack of comon sense, lack of knowledge of basic civics..." oh yes, that bothers me too, greatly "... and irrational projection..." seen so much of that, it hardly surprises "... and diversion of blame on Bush and Republicans is just about the most appalling thing I have seen yet...." Now that surprises me. The most appalling thing I have seen is hard to choose, but it would dead bodies laying for days in the heat, corpses floating in the water, and thousand of people being killed, that far more appalls me than criticism of Bush, but that is just me. 20,000 people trapped in the convention center with no water, no food, no rescue and "good job Brownie" saw he was unaware of these 20,000 people whose plight was reported on the news daily, that appalls me far more than criticism of Bush, but I am well known for having my priorities screwed up. Charity Hospital going for days without food, medicine, in a cesspool, losing 30 some patients because no rescue came to them, that appalls me far more than criticism of Bush but I am a bleeding heart. The people who were directed to wait on the overpasses for rescue, and waited in vain for four days with no water, no food, ne shelter, no sanitation, that appalls me more than criticism of Bush, but I am just silly. The 30 some patients frowned in the nursing home... the emaciated bodies of the elderly who were rescued a week after... the parents searching for their children... the 6 year old who led a group of younger children through the flood waters to safety and they wonder where their parents are... that appalls me more than criticism of Bush, but that shows my priorities are all wrong. The plight of the dogs who were abandoned, those who starved to death, those who swam to rescue boats to be rebuffed when they looked to humans for some love after being "man's best friend", those dogs having a conscious to know they were being turned away to die... that appalls me more than criticism of Bush, but I am a tree hugger animal lover so surely I am a wacko. Many things appall me far far far more than criticism of Bush. In that I must be defective somehow because "blame on Bush and Republicans is just about the most appalling thing I have seen yet" is a sentiment that I cannot fathom in my heart or mind, I turn to the Scriptures of my faith, searching for answers, and the passage that came to mind was Amos chapter 6. Maybe I should read this and get my priorities straight. Let me share Amos 6 with you so that you may advise me of my flaws that I look at death and destruction and don't see that what is most appalling is criticism of Bush. Amos 6.1-7 Alas for those who are at ease in Zion, and for those who feel secure on Mount Samaria, the notables of the first of the nations, to whom the house of Israel resorts! Cross over to Calneh, and see; from there go to Hamath the great; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Or is your territory greater than their territory, O you that put far away the evil day, and bring near a reign of violence? Alas for those who lie on beds of ivory, and lounge on their couches, and eat lambs from the flock, and calves from the stall; who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp, and like David improvise on instruments of music; who drink wine from bowls, and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph! Therefore they shall now be the first to go into exile, and the revelry of the loungers shall pass away. In retrospect, Bush may be to blame for not invoking the Insurrection Act and simply invading Louisiana to get the job done, but then people would be howling that this would prove he's a neo-con fascist, right? It is *disgusting* and somewhat depraved to make political hay over this tragedy. The political bashing as a "first response" certainly doesn't prove to me that there is any true caring involved for the victims. The good news is that there are millions of people out there who are truly doing something to help people at this time. I will try to remember that amidst the gall. Go ahead and flame away, those who are so disposed. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Sep 2005 19:45:50 -0700 (PDT) From: Bryan Subject: FEMA, Bush, etc. NJC From a previous post defending Bush and the feds: "FEMA is not a rescue agency." From the FEMA Web site: "What does FEMA do? Prepares Responds Helps Recover Reduces Risk Coordinates the Federal Response to Presidentially Declared Disasters Whether a disaster strikes without warning, such as a tornado or earthquake, or gives advance warning, such as a hurricane, FEMA moves quickly to position staff and supplies and assess what other federal agencies are needed as well. FEMA does not respond to every disaster that occurs in the U.S. It responds only when a disaster overwhelms a state's resources and the governor requests federal help. Once damage assessments are made, the President may issue a federal disaster declaration, opening the way for the federal government to pay for disaster recovery." So, from this we can conclude that though FEMA is certainly not exclusively or primarily a rescue agency, it is, largely, a response agency and does play a key role in coordinating or supporting those who do rescue, at least those who are federally employed or charged. Perhaps it used to be a check-writing agency but the role has expanded. As for Katrina, they failed. As for Bush, if he's going to keep doing photo opps like the one he did this (Monday) morning, he should take acting lessons. He couldn't have appeared more disinterested. Or, perhaps he was tired. As he said to the reporters (when explaining why he hadn't spoken to Brown or Chertoff very recently), "Well, you know, I've been working." We all know how hard he works, especially in the interest of poor, black people. And, while I would love to blame the debacle solely on Republicans, I will say that it is clear that Governor Blanco failed as well. Bryan Tired of spam? Yahoo!
