It's good and hard to come by, I heard. Mine's a former library copy. Diltz's photo are the gold standard for the California 60's rock scene. And did you know he was one of two of the official photographers at Woodstock? There's another photography book out there chornicling that Yasgar's Farm thing. No Joan, though, of course. Still can't quite get my head around the fact that Geffen pulled her out, just so she could do the bloody Dick Cavett show on a full night's sleep. But that's history. I need to get over it. Our Kakki is pretty good friends with Henry down in the City of the Fallen Angeles and has seen his photography lecture and exhibit, which he tours from time to time. Check his website. Maybe email him and ask him where you can get the book, eh? He's cool. Mention Joan. Maybe he'll give you some inside skinny on Joan and the old days. He's got a DVD out, too. Title escapes. Thanks, Lindsay. Now I've got to dig it all out of where ever the freak I stashed it for a look-see of my own. Well, wouldn't you know, another person upped the bid by .25. (Oh, come on!) I went up another $3. Someone upped it by $1. I just entered my predetermined limit of $30 and someone upped it by .25. I won't mention the rude names I've shouted out at these small-minded individuals ... but then it occurred to me my competitors could be ... one of you! Haha! It's probably not worth much more to me than $30 so I hesitate to up the bid again (just to lose by a measly .25). Well, if it's any of you, let me know how the book is ... Firstly, a couple of general notes: - - The weather could not have been more PERFECT the entire time, and that was a true blessing as this fest would have been devastated by rain. - - No mosquitoes, or if they were there they were as laid back as the rest of us and didn't feel like biting. - - the words "clean & sober" are not likely to appear anywhere in this story. Secondly, the JONI content for those who want only that: Well, for the umpteenth time, Joni did not show up, dammit. Though she would have been thoroughly enchanted with the place. But here's a cool moment - fast forward to Tuesday night, John, Claudia & I had driven all the way through France into Belgium (1000 km/750 miles) and had finally found a reasonably-priced hotel. We were across the street at a snack bar, enjoying some beers, chips (that's fries to most of us), meat balls, and bitter balls, and of course great conversation when lo and behold, what did I hear coming out of the snack bar radio? "Magdalene Laundries"! On the radio! So there we were, 3 friends who came together because of Joni, enjoying a moment in an obscure Belgian locale, and there she was too...as if to say 'whenever 2 or more are gathered in my name'.... Thirdly, a couple of MAJOR thank-you's: - - Joni, thanks for your work, which has resulted in my meeting the most phenomenal people I know and having the time of my life, year after year. - - Les Irvin, see above note - - Laurent, for all the work you did in initiating this event and making it an unforgettable one - - Mike Pritchard, for suggesting Barcelona as a point of entry, meeting me at the airport, being a sublime tour guide, and even giving up your own bed! - - Emiliano, for driving the distance from Barcelona to Corbieres, and even making an unbearable traffic jam a beddy, beddy, WONDERFUL time - - John & Claudia, for the travel adventures post-fest and for your endless well of kindness & generosity. Words cannot suffice. I arrived in Barcelona Friday morning, moving my watch ahead 6 hours. Not having traveled to Europe before, I didn't know what to expect but Customs was a breeze. (And only in America do we remove shoes at security). Mike & Emiliano were there as promised, Mike being a very stoic Alec Guiness-sort of a chap and Emiliano of course being like a kid at Chrismastime. We had a cup of coffee while we waited for Garrett, who was delayed slightly but no problem. After a stopover at Mike's to meet his girlfriend Eli (so incredibly kind), have a cold beer and some wonderful appertizers, we journeyed out into Barcelona, which was not so boisterous as it was holiday month. We spent the bulk of the day wandering the city, looking at some amazing architecture and historical locations, like the Plaza Del Rey where Columbus conferred with Ferdinand & Isabella. Here in America, we think of sites dating back to the 1700's as being old & historical so it really is pretty awesome to think of how far back some of these locations go. And the women!! I though the USA was blessed with gorgeous women, but the streets of Bareclona are a gawker's paradise. Luckily I didn't walk into a tree or anything. After admiring a couple of Gaudi buildings (I had not heard of him but his architecture is very cool and incredibly innovative when you consider when his structures were built), we ducked into a great restaurant and after a nightcap at Mike's favorite British pub (George & Dragon) we called it a night and after a long time without a lot of sleep I was out in no time. Saturday - After a tasty breakfast (pizza for breakfast - yummy!) We hit the road in Emiliano's vehicle - luckily we were traveling light so we and our baggage all fit very comfortably. I have to add at this point that all three of my traveling companions were so great and so much fun. As I alluded to earlier, the roads were packed since it was holiday month and lots of folks were heading to France - thanks to good company, and Miles of Aisles & Loggins & Messina's live Finale and some other music I didn't recognize but heartily enjoyed we crossed into France, got a quick bite at a very quaint roadside store and then with Shadows and Light playing, and thanks to Mike's fine navigation we wound through a series of small villages (just like you see in the movies) and after a side trip to a lovely gorge site located the fest site (or what we figured was the fest site as it wasn't visible from the road). And I recognized Catherine, but didn't have a clue who the red-headed chick was until I did a double-take and saw that it was the Queen-Mother of the fests herself, Ashara! Time to unload and look at our home away from home for the next few days, and also time to end Part 1. I was warmly greeted by Laurent and shown my quarters, which was an old stone mill converted into 2 bedrooms; the floor level where I stayed and a very cool loft area where Lieve was situated. And by eccentric and cool, how many rooms have you stayed in that were fully equipped with a hookah and a marimba? That's what I thought - this was like no other place on earth! Laurent gave us le grand tour, which included the pools (ponds), the medicine wheel circle thingy or whatever it was officially called, the bathroom (the coolest bathroom ever but then you've heard about that already), the shower (which was rumored to have warm water from time to time), and the other bungalows, gardens and such. It was like a little paradise of a place really, definitely a getting back to the garden. The "schedule" for this fest was pretty unstructured, which was fine by me - I removed my watch when I got there so I had no sense of time anyway. Saturday night featured a great dinner from Jean-Yves, Monique and their crew of hard-working helpers. A general note: these guys were great and seemed totally dedicated to everyone having what they needed and enjoying themselves. Because we were out in nature, miles & miles (kilometers & kilometers may be better) from anybody else, there was no problem with complaining neighbors or anything. The performances were also free-flowing; I had only planned to do a couple songs with Thierry, but Anita beckoned me to join her with Laurent on guitar to do "Woodstock", and how could I refuse my love Anita, even after having several glasses of the incredible wine, which slid down like spring water. Thankfully I recalled all the words! As always, I enjoyed all the performers; Jamie charmed us with lots of Joni (much Joni, as he would say), Stryngs (who only get better & better), and has been mentioned the performances of Randall & Claudia, both sepearately and together - an incredibly beautiful blending of voices and guitars. Catherine also turned in a great set of her "From The Roses" set, including a spell-binding take on "Cold Blue Steel". It was also a gas doing my improv'ed "American Blues" complete with 'air harmonica'. The night was a little too much fun, however, and this beer drinker didn't do a very good job of pacing himself with drinking wine, so thanks Claudia for helping me find my way to my bed in the pitch-black night. My intoxication did come in handy, however, when Lieve demanded that I exterminate a MAJOR spider and I was able to do so without fear. Luckily, thanks to good ol' Jonifest magic I felt great on Sunday and after some coffee and some Pink Floyd in the background I was raring to go again. After a couple of great meals, the bulk of us headed out to enjoy a beautiful hike in the mountains, ending up in the frigid pools fed by the waterfalls. I watched the more adventurous folks do the 10-30' dives into the large pool, and then with Lucy's coaxing decided to slither in myself. I did get all the way in, but the water was SO COLD I was quickly sunning myself on a rock which was much nicer. If this water had been any colder, it would have been ice! But it was a ton of fun, and the picture of Les Ross under the waterfall is a classic mental picture I'll never forget. Sunday night was more great food and song, but despite this the highlight of the night was given to us by Rajah, the resident German Shepard, who fell head over heels with Martin and in the middle of Anita's set got caught up in the moment and started humping his leg! Poor Martin had to quickly explain that Rajah was just not his type...oh well, Jonifests can contain their share of heartbreak...I can't remember who all did what, but Stryngs' song "Cartwheels Over the Watering Can", Randall's "Draw The Line" and a wonderful performance by Chris & Les of "Sailing To Philadelphia" were highlights for me - Chris, thanks for treating us to your singing, a wonderful surprise. And of course, I have to mention the playing and singing of Thierry Antoine, who was kind enough to let me sing "Blue Motel Room" and "Refuge Of The Roads" to his wonderful accompaniment, such effortless playing and such kindness, and his singing on Jericho, Harry's House and others was also stupendous. Monday was another simply beautiful day...I have to add that for me the highlight of these events is just the "hanging out" part, and one of the nice things about this fest vs. the Full Moon gatherings was that because the crowd was smaller I really got to spend good time with folks; so there was lots of time just sipping coffee, water, wine or whatever and just talking, telling jokes, spellbound by somebody's story or telling Guy from Luxembourg for the 5th time about the night that I met Joni Mitchell. Also on the agenda for Monday was a trip to a castle ruin that dated back to about 1100 - for whatever reason only a few of us made the trip; thanks to Lieve for driving - it was a beautiful drive through vineyards, villages, and horseback riders, one of whom almost swung around and knocked into our car. The castle was simply amazing, quite a climb up some slippery stones and pathways, but once you reached the top, you could see the Mediterranean Sea to your left and the Pyrenees to your right - an amazing view, one that I'll certainly not forget. Just don't look down, makes you weak in the knees... Upon returning from the castle, I poured myself a glass of wine and joined a group that was relaxing in the garden area in chairs, hammock and joined in the conversation, which at the time was crazy Lucy singing about the "Wombles of Wimbledon" and recounting children's TV shows that involved such characters as Seaman Stains, Master Bates, and Roger The Cabin Boy, and from there she started directing us in a chorale version of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and then the even-crazier Stryngs says "Let's play the song game!!" which then led us into an almost 2-hour competition where we battled back and forth with song associations; Mike, Lizzie (Lucy's daughter, a genuine sweetheart), Ashara, myself & John HANDILY & THOUROUGHLY DEFEATED Stryngs, Lucy, Garrett and the rest of their team, but that didn't matter - it was WAY too much fun! The sight of the usually soft-spoken Garrett shouting out his songs and pointing in defiance is a sight I'll not soon forget. This another "Ganja Line" fest moment for me; one of those things that you could never plan but rather just happens, and is all the more fun because of it. The only downside of it was that Ashara and I were all wired up to sing and throughout the evening meal we proceeded to sing EVERY SHOWTUNE EVER WRITTEN, much to the chagrin of Eric, Catherine, and all others around us - sorry about that gang, (but damn it was fun!). So after a few performances in the makeshift performance space, I made my way to my Mill bedroom for the last time with a bellyful of great food & drink, an earful of laughter & song, a headful of brilliant memories, and a heartful of the Jonifest spirit that simply doesn't exist anywhere else. Tuesday morning was time for adieus and the final leg of my adventures, so that's a good way to end part 2. I would love that myself--the 3 bonus tracks in that set are a real treat. I can't answer your question, but I can say "I'd doubt it." Several reasons come to mind: 1. Not enough commercial value for the record company to bother. 2. No evidence (to my knowledge) that Joni regrets the production of these albums and would want "alternate" versions available. 3. That only 3 tracks were included in the box, and one a Dylan cover at that. If there was a lot great alternate material that Joni wanted out, she probably would have included more in the box. Back 79' I was ever so fortunate to listen to stripped down versions of several tracks off DJRD, the one that sticks in my head most is Otis and Marlena, more of a plucking guitar solo. It was beautiful! I was living in Alpine, TX at the time and Boyd Elder had the cassette. Boyd is from Valentine, TX not to far from Alpine..We would hang at a local bar. Boyd is the "split tongue spirit" on the song DJRD..He shared with me that he had to prep for the recording by getting sauced on Tequila! Joni frequented this area often...Yes, while i was there..this is only the tip of the ice berg in stories...;-) Best, tejas ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Aug 2005 19:55:49 -0700 From: Subject: YouSendIt Delivery Notification: Three Great Stimulants.mp3 Hello, You've got a file called "Three Great Stimulants.mp3" (8289 KB) from rflynn@frontiernet.net waiting for download. rflynn@frontiernet.net says: Muller's DED from the Rock Master Class is sublime --here's an mp3 of the best song on DED "3 GReat Stimulants" from the 1986 Amnesty Int'l Concert. It sounds like another magical place and mostly because of the company. I am very happy to hear Mama Lion is planning another one. April is such a hard month for me (especially the last to weeks cause of Jazz Fest) but if it is the first two weeks I WILL be there. So what about 2006???? Is there not some brave soul that has been secretly planning some amazing get away?? We only had about 15 people that were interested in the cruise trip. Someone was telling me about a place in Cancun or Cozumel that sounds like a neat place to do a fest with stage and sound and lots of cheap accomodations and of course TEQUILA!!! Lol. I miss all you guys. I had to work downtown on the river tonight with Cyril Neville and as he took the stage for the first time tonight the Carinval Conquest was making it's way down river and I am sure they got a good taste of some New Orleans funk wailing from my PA system. I spoke with Julius tonight and Gayle is back in the hospital. She had been quite nauseated and so they admitted her to do some tests tomorrow. He says the organs are doing just fine though so there does not seem to be any rejection or anything like that. Time to pray and beam your thoughts to the west. Love To all Paz > you or anything...)
