Since you mention Rochester you might want to about the "Only Joni Open Mic" that judo guitar site guru Sue McNamara and I host in Ithaca, NY. It's irregular and and occasional (well we've only done it twice in 3 years) but we'll do it again. Perhaps this fall at Cornell University for the students, and then next year in town. I think your warm thoughts got through and made everything better!!! Thank you!!!! I am a big fan of the old Mike Meyers skit from Saturday Night Live called "Linda Richmond's Coffee Talk" In it, Mike Meyers played this talk show host character named Linda Richmond who souded a bit like Joan Rivers and it was hillarious!!! Whenever someone would start talking about Barbara Streisand, Linda would get all emotional, bite her lip and whisper, "Now I'm perclempt!" It was so funny. One time Madonna played a guest on the imaginary show and I believe Barbara Streisand actually surprised them both and appeared in the skit! I loved it and I have used the word ever since! It's so funny because I just said that word to my brother who has been in South Korea for two years yesterday! He fell over laughing and started doing the skit himself! It both warmed and chilled my head, my heart, my soul... "There's comfort in melancholy When there's no need to explain It's just as natural as the weather In this moody sky today" This song really says it all. "You know it never has been easy Whether you do or you do not resign" No life is not easy, nor is Joni easy, or her music easy. But how lucky and blessed we are because of that. there will always be new depths for us devoted listeners to discover and rediscover, again and again. Joni has soemething for every phase in life. For the old, for the young, for the middleclassed, the middleaged, for the lovers and for the haters. She captures both the shadows and at least some glimse of lights in extremely insightful and very wise lyrics. The Hejira album is special. I've owned it for three years, and three years it took for me to grasp it,understand it. The travel theme. The stories of returned and unreturned love, her metaphors, the jazzy mood, from blue motel rooms to travellin' vehicles, strange boys, strangers . . .It's innovative. It's challenging . Joni Mitchell haunts this tune as he sings, "We didn't court and we didn't spark." Snelling's fondness for Joni's bittersweet lyrical imagery can be heard throughout, accompanied by Mose Allison's wistful tone, the intimacy of Bill Evans' ballads and Sting's soaring vocal laments...">> Sounds good to me -- his CD is available at CDBaby.com ($11.98) and he has a website at (not surprisingly) www.stevesnelling.com. I'm definitely going to check him out. I read this review too late to catch him at a recent appearance in/near the Castro, but the reviewer goes on to say that he'll be appearing at the Zingari Lounge in the Hotel Donatello in beautiful downtown SF starting in September. Tell you what, I'm gonna get the CD (love to help struggling musical artists, especially those compared to La Joni) and if he's really got the goods, I'll come back and tell y'all, and maybe we can get a small group of Bay Area Joniphiles together for a night on the town in September.
