Thank you for sharing it. My favorite part was when she said in relation to the title of her new CD, "Dance of the Infidel" she said that "everyone is an infidel at some point in their lives". How true!!!! If one does not conform to whatever standard may be set at any given time, one is considered an infidel. It just depends on the area of conformity (or non conformity). Every situation is different. It reminds me of "marching to the beat of your own drummer". The writer of the article is very good too! He describes her voice as "warm" which is so true! when Me'shell speaks, you know it is her! Thanks again David! How sweet are you?!? - thanks... :-) Far be it from me to be a stepping stone to your eventual financial bankruptcy... but the consolation is that you'd be musically and morally replete - short answer: yes! Long answer: My love of Dar goes back to 1995 when I first heard her duet with Joan Baez on the Ring Them Bells CD - "my life changed" is not an understatement. My Better Self will be Dar's sixth studio CD and she has a live/greatest hits recording as well - in my opinion, her guitar-playing is standard and her voice is lovely but not exceptional... but I am a word person and she meets and exceeds my needs in that arena. Dar's lyrics are dense and clever and poetic - her songs have an immediate effect on me but I know that every time I revisit, I will gain something new. She appeals to my heart *and* my brain - there's a lump-in-the-throat factor that cannot be denied yet she is incredibly intelligent (while still maintaining a loopy persona that can be heard on Out There Live and in her concerts - great storyteller!)... Don't get me started on her kindness to (and remembering of) fans and her emphasis on community service - she's the total package, in my opinion... Go to http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Dar-Williams-lyrics/2A24FF29EFE5C3BD4825699D00296293 and read the lyrics to the following songs - these are not necessarily my Top Five (although You're Aging Well will always be #1) but they give a good cross-section of her "heart and humor and humility"... :-) You're Aging Well When I Was a Boy I Had No Right The Pointless, Yet Poignant, Crisis of a Co-ed What Do You Hear in These Sounds Back to short answer: Joni and Dar and Dave-and-Tracy (oh my!) are my musical triumvirate - hope this helps! P.S. As god is my witness, I'd love to hear Dar cover a Joni song (I know she's a fan) before I exit this world - happy happy joy joy... <3 Susan http://www.heartsdesireconcerts.com http://www.horseofadifferentcolorbooking.com "When you have more than you need do you spread the rest around Be it time, be it money, be it love..." ~ Rachel Bissex ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Aug 2005 09:45:04 -0700 (PDT) From: Em Subject: Re: NJC - Close to My Heart (Dar Williams) ah, ok! Thats pretty interesting - and I *might* understand what you mean...will have to give the new Dar a listen. Or heck, maybe even some "old" Dar, but I don't own any. But I'd have to say, that in a sense Dave's stuff *is* amazingly layered - especially lyrically and visually. About 4 or 5 of his songs are Joni and Dylan level with regard to the "visuals". But I'm guessing you mean not layered or sophisticated from a production stand point - and then I'd have to agree. I tend to like butt-simple production though... My failure to comprehend, I'm sure! (I'm actually starting to think I might have an ear failure) anyway..thanks again..its really great to hear how other folks feel about music. And its really great to hear from someone who is an admirer of Dave Carter. I'm a fairly recent discoverer of the "cave of wonder" that is his work. Its blown me away, oh so pleasantly. Its a "demon come screamin" down the musical highway. A rare thing, in this life. Dave Carter was a skilled songwriter and warm performer but his albums were not heavily layered...one of them was recorded in Tracy's kitchen. :-) Dar can be equally verbose but the sophistication of the arrangements and her brilliant metaphorically-laden poetry clearly puts her product on a different level. One more thing I love about Dar (and the list just gets longer) is that she not only chose to cover this great song (with wild abandon) but also didn't feel the need to change the gender - I've seen this topic on other lists as well and I personally feels it gets in the way of the song. Most of Dar's original tunes are pronoun-absent (think Joan Armatrading, etc.) - her focus is inclusion and respect, which explains the diversity of her fanbase. To be able to pendulum from You're Aging Well to Teenagers, Kick Our Butts is a gift - she can celebrate life with The Blessings while still acknowledging the depth of depression in After All. When she sings of "mom", I can feel it from both sides (one who *is* and one who *knows*) - her words resonate with and within me...
