Please don't get mad -- I'm not attacking anyone -- but I was vaccinated by feminism so I think the critical focus outward on world and national issues is a stage of life. Quite a lot of longtime songwriter/performers do this after years of more personal work, as though the personal sphere has become too confining. For instance, Bruce Springsteen's recent work. Not that anyone here is actually saying this, but the "domestic bliss theory" suggests that a woman won't look beyond her personal emotional sphere until she's got a happy relationship. And I'm not bitter, no sirree. :)) For myself, the personal *is* political. I really squirm when a song is hitting me over the head with criticisms of society/politics etc., when there is no person in the song. I prefer fiction :)) Patti - -- Patti Witten on I-Town Records www.itownrecords.com MySpace http://myspace.com/pattiwitten http://pattiwitten.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Aug 2005 04:15:10 -0700 (PDT) From: Loren Carter Subject: Re: A lithograph and accompanying invitations (SJC) Bob, Since I already have GEICO car insurance, I felt good about saving more money and not having to pony up for the lithograph. When the seller contacted me and offered to sell it to me directly for one comma and 4 numbers, (since at the time I was the only bidder), he pointed to the purchase of the below mentioned lithograph. Where there was a flury of last minute bidding and the price got elevated to the $1.2K neighborhood. I decided that I wasn't going to play that game. And, in hindsight, he'd a made an extra $150 if I'd taken him up on his offer. Glad I passed on that. I've heard from others that contacting me and making that offer is contrary to eBay rules, again, I'm glad I didn't leap at that offer. Having never played eBay, I didn't know, but it sounded fishy to me. And when I mentioned the possible purchase to my wife, she said that the money could be better spent saving starving children in Africa or the rain forest in South America. She likes Joni's artwork, but we already have one signed lithograph and that's enough for her. It would have been an extravagent Christmas present, and my wife is definately LOW maintenance. It's a good point, although I certainly wasn't thinking in terms of gender myself. Perhaps the same could be said about Springsteen--that his happy marriage changed his outlook and made him concerned about other things. However, I don't really believe that, and it may well be untrue of Joni as well, but in her case her lyrics do tend to be heavily autobiographical and, "Our House" not withstanding, "songs of domestic bliss" would likely be a dull album. Bryan Ferry continued writing "broken relationship" songs during his then-happy marriage. He explained that as his lyrics were all fiction, there was no need to change his approach (or something like that). That may be a difference with Joni. Or not. She won't. The song list is shown at this link: http://www.dollyon-line.com/archives/albums/twtdays/index.shtml and doesn't include Joan, at least not as a vocalist. Both Sides Now is covered however, as a duet with Judy Collins. Also, the album's title, reported earlier as Blue Smoke, has been changed to Those Were The Days. The title song is covered with Mary Hopkin. This has been your unofficial Dolly-Joni-Judy update. Tired of spam? Yahoo! It was cloudy and I always feel "blah" without the sun. I was fortunate to have a seat all to myself and so I relaxed, pulled out a scarf I was crocheting, and listened to Joni. It takes me at least an hour to get to work so I knew I'd be able to listen to the whole CD. It took me back to Los Angeles 1975 when I first discovered this album and her music. For me, each song flows into the other one and that recurring theme of lonliness and self-observation is in each and every song. Again, I am so thankful that Joni allowed us into this period of her life. When I want to feel brave, I listen to this CD. It was so nice because five minutes into the CD, the sun came out and the sky became blue instead of grey. It was a good sign for me. It was a Court and Spark morning. It was my very first Joni album and I must have worn the grooves out on the old vinyl. I had never heard anything quite like it and Joni seemed to be channelling my soul in so many ways. I really enjoyed Jamie's post about C&S and I agree with him wholeheartedly. I think an alternate title for this album could be 'Love and Madness'. Beginning with the madman's soul sparking that crazy feeling that makes her know she's in trouble again and ending with two portraits of 'insanity' one serious, the other comic, Joni documents the insecurities and paranoia that love and life were generating for her at that time. I agree with you about how the album flows, Sherelle. It's like a piece of intricate machinery All the instrumental and vocal parts fit together and each successive song feels like the logical continuation of a song cycle. It's about as close to perfect as anything can be, imo. Has there ever been a more beautiful rendering of A Case of You, than the version Joni offered us on BSN? I think this has to be the definitive version. As for old jazz standards, I like them a lot too. Oddly enough, I feel the T-LOG songs have a contemporary feel. And while I don't enjoy all of them, I do enjoy listening to my T-Log shortlist mix.
