Interesting experience last Thursday.....there was a torrential downpour here (the Garden State), then a few thunderous rumblings....then a ear-shattering BOOM!!!! I live in an apartment complex....huge, don't like it here....and that BOOM was a lightning hit.....I walked outside, smelled the smoke and all of our building was evacuated, like the wind pitching a monsterous breath causing the leave to quiver, threatening to fall to the ground. We were all standing in the hot, hot sun for hours, although I was huddled in my car with my four frightened, as in FRIGHTENED, dogs. I ran into my adjoining neighbor's apartment....lucky she had given me a key....and brought her dog to safety. Once everyone and every animal was accounted for, the fire trucks came zooming in along with several cop cars. Well, 'the walls came tumbling down', and all we could do was watch. The main hit was in the back and three apartments were completely demolished. I'm right across from them so thank the heavens, all I'm contending with is soot and more soot. Joni's fine or I'd be blubbering along these lines of BOOM and gloom. The Red Cross interviewed everyone, offering $400 for clothing and $200 for food. When my interview time came around, I told the nice Red Cross lady that I wanted what they would have given me and my sister to go to the families who experienced much more damage. "Oh, my dear, what a kind gesture." Wouldn't you guys have interpreted that as a positive response to my request???????? Well, that "kind gesture" stayed in the Red Cross bank of emergency funds.....I should have accepted it and I should have given it to the other families....but I'm too trusting...reality is, I didn't think along those lines. We're getting out of this fire-trap just as soon as my credit score gets a little (or a lot) higher and we can afford a trailer or a mobile, pre-fab home. On to much more important things.........Laura, I loved your suggestions for honoring the earth!!!! Consider them done (by the end of a few weeks)! Has anyone heard from Brian, who is recovering from surgery? Brian, if you're reading this, vibes of love and speedy recovery are sent daily! Bob, I'd love to send you some b's & p for several on your list. Where do I send it? Off to help one of my neighbors....... All be safe, Love from Bo Tired of spam? Yahoo! His name rang a bell when I heard it and I'm sure it was your posts I must have been reading. The thing is, until I actually hear the artist, I don't usually make the connection for some reason. I love reading about fellow JMDLer's musical tastes and interests and I try to look for their clips of their music. This one definitely slipped by me Paz! So sorry! You know Marc's brother??? You've produced him???? Oh my gosh!!!!!! Paz, my friend, I was so blown away by this guy's voice I still can't get over it!!!! "Home" is an absolutely fantastic cut!!!! I love the key he is singing in on the song! It brings out those Delta Blues so perfectly!!!! I love the part of the song which goes, "This greyhound is delta-bound mama, baby boy has finally found his way home..." and the other part of the song where he speaks, "Here we go!" and then he lets loose withn these vocals which makes your hair stand on end!!! My goodness!!!! Paz...keep him in that Delta groove because he is so very, very good at it! I see where he is playing several House of Blues venues and that is so great! On another note, I watched a special of Fats Domino playing at the New Orlean Jazzfest a few weeks ago and got to hear an interview with him and Allen Toussaint. It was fantastic as was the music of Fats Domino! You should be proud to work with such great artists! I've heard of BeauSoliel (good sun?) but I will have to check out their music as well as the link you provided for Marc Broussard. I'm so proud of you Paz!!!!!!! Thank you for being in mental overdrive! You are so right! This is why I have such deep affection for Joni. She was brave enough to share this experience with us through song. She made it all right to be a little broken. Court and Spark is my catharthis CD. I play it when I need to figure things out. I need to hear someone be brave enough to verbalize her fears and her shortcomings so beautifully. I can definitely relate to the pain she was going through at the time. As a seventeen year old in L.A. at the time I first heard her music, it hit so very close to home. I felt like she was speaking right to me. The timing of discovering her music was perfect. Bittersweet but good memories. Thanks Jamie for reminding me of those! Sherelle NPIMH-People's Parties..."I told you when I met you I was crazy..." Jamie wrote: Hello Nuriel If you read Court and Spark like a diary, a collection of thoughts of a period of time, you would get the sense that Joni was certainly going through it at that point. From articles of the time and interviews about the time, you do get the feeling (and often the evidence!) that she was going though a depression (the house in the Canadian back-bush, reading of all theories of modern thought and philosophy and psychology) all point to an outward manifestation of disturbance. It ended around Court and Spark. Her next album turns away from her inner life and describes the life around her. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Aug 2005 14:03:58 +0000 From: "Sherelle Smith" Subject: Re: njc, OH HAPPY DAY! (njc) Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!!! I am still floating two feet above the ground! By chance I happened to pick up a copy of one of our express newspapers last Thursday or Friday and I saw where the Funk Brothers were coming to the Birchmere in Northern Virginia. Even though I am terrified of driving in this Metro traffic, I had to go!!! I emailed a friend of mine who frequents the venue a lot for instructions on what to do once I got there. (I'd never been there before) I had heard that there was no assigned seating so I wanted to make sure I did it right to get the best seat. She told me to show up no later than 4 and get in line (the show started at 7:30). The doors would open at 5 so that everyone could get a ticket to determine their place in line for seating once the stage area opened up at 6. I was fourth in line. The area we waiting in was out of the sun and there were benches lined against the building so that everyone could sit. The first person their said she could not sit (she had a cane) and so she leaned against her car parked in front of us in the handicapped section. The next thing I knew, she hit the ground with a "thud" which went right through me! The lady behind me called 911 and they arrived within five minutes, thank goodness! We stepped away and let the paramedics do their job. We were later informed that she was taken to the hospital. That and the fact that my tail pipe came loose going over the biggest speedbump I'd ever seen made me wonder if I should have turned around and gone back home. I am so glad that I didn't! I was third in line going into the staged area of the venue and I went straight to the front!!!! I was there to see bassist Bob Babbit and when I saw the bass in the base stand, I sat down right in front of it! The Birchmere is also a fine eating establishment so I ordered chicken pot pie for myself and it was delicious! (They serve until 8 pm). I met some very great people who kept me company (Hubby had to work) and when the lights dimmed, this feeling of excitement came over me!!!!!! I'd heard that only three of the Funk Brothers (Uriel Jones-drums, Bob Babbit-bass, and Eddie Willis-guitar) would be performing and I wasn't sure if things would be the same but man! I was not dissapointed!!!!!!! The sound of a radio broadcast from the 60's played while Eddie Willis made his way onto the stage. He had a cane and made his way slowly to the stool he would sit on throughout the performance. Seeing him took my breath away!!!!! I was five feet from him if that!!!! Then Bob Babbit, and Uriel Jones made their way onto the stage and for some reason, I was overcome with emotion and started crying like a baby! They so deserved this long awaited spotilight! Bob Babbit was sitting right in front of me and probably thought I'd lost my mind! (smile) I spent most of the night with my hand over my mouth in disbelief! I think I was most overcome when Bob Babbit played the famous bass line in "What's Going On". That is the album where they were first recognized by name. Babbit (as everyone calls him) would close his eyes and just play to the grove. You couldn't help but go there with him. Eddie Willis was playing rhythm guitar with one of the guitarists from Rare Earth (who was also briefly in the movie) and it was so fantastic to see how they complimented each other. One would always play higher on the frets and the other would play lower. They would switch up on different songs. Uriel Jones had every original beat down perfectly. I can't tell you what is was like to be that close to such legends! I had to fight the urge not to cry during the entire show! Their singers were all from Detroit and they were fantastic! I think the best song of the night was "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted". They did it EXACTLY like the movie. The sound was absolutely incredible!!! They had three horn players with one of them playing that huge saxophone that seems to be five foot tall! At the end of the set, everyone was on their feet and I was so sad it was almost over. The fellow next to me pushed me forward to shake Bob Babbit's hand. What an honor!!!! I was also able to shake Uriel Jones hand and then...the encore! My goodness! They played the most rousing version of "Shotgun" I've ever heard!!!!! We went crazy!!!!! Each Funk Brother did a solo and Bob Babbit stood up, closed his eyes and played his heart out!!!! You could see they were tired so it was definitely the last song. As they started to leave the stage, the fellow next to me actually got Uriel Jone's drum sticks! Uriel said, "What am I going to play with man?" jokingly. What a nice payback for pushing me towards the front to shake hands! Bob Babbit looked back at me and I ws able to say "Thank you". He smiled and nodded and for me, it did not get any better than that. I turned to go because the desires of my heart had been fulfilled. I shook hands with Bob Babbit...what more was there? Going out the door, I saw the stretch limo waiting to take them away and I thought to myself, "how perfectly fitting!"... A limo long enough for the souls of all the Funk Brothers who are no longer here...James Jamison, Pistol Allen, Benny Benjamin, Earl Van Dyke, and Robert White if I've remembered everyone. For everything they've done and contributed to R&B music in this century, this tribute by me is pitifully woeful of what they really deserve.
