I remember spilling my popcorn, >I remember beautiful prisms, and I think I remember Pollyanna falling out >of a tree. Could that be true? > You remember correctly, Deb. The odd thing about Pollyanna is that I remember wanting to see it badly when it came out but for some reason, I never got to see it in the theater. We had a comic book version and I was a big Hayley Mills fan (never sure if I had a crush on her or if I wanted to *be* her - lol!) so I knew the story. It may have played on 'The Wonderful World of Disney' when I was a kid but my first memory of actually seeing it is watching it as an adult on the Disney Channel. I think I did read the book when I was kid. Hayley's English accent in this slice of Americana notwithstanding, this is a very sweet, delightful film. Jane Wyman (post Ronnie Raygun and pre Falcon Crest) is appropriately stern and repressed as Aunt Polly and there are fine performances from Agnes Moorehead as a crotchety old hypochondriac that Pollyanna forces out of her obsession with dying and Karl Malden as a fire and brimstone preacher, expected and instructed by the wealthy Aunt Polly to villify his congregation every Sunday. Pollyanna's optimism and faith in people (Aunt Polly probably believes in cleaning - Patti's JMOCD is contagious) causes a spiritual crisis in Malden's character and his epiphany is one of my favorite parts of the movie. And Deb is right, Hayley Mills does fall out of a tree setting up a most satisfying tear-jerker of an ending. Recommended for children and adults alike. A true family film that tells a nice story without a shred of irony. Typical Disney fair, in some ways, but this one has a real heart. Performances of your favorite musicians were relegated to variety shows and late night interview shows. This three disc set brings you some of the many highlights from Dick Cavett's talk show. You'll get to relive rare appearances from The Airplane, Janis, Stills, Crosby, Joni Mitchell, George Harrison, Sly Stone and many others. All of the performances are live and some even come over to the couch for some chat. Cavett treats them with respect and the conversations are relaxed and at times insightful. A real slice of musical history on these discs. Shout Factory $34.99 WOODY GUTHRIE THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS This DVD claims to offer all of the known film footage of Guthrie. It's quite an eye opener for music history buffs. Tons of interviews, rare photos and footage are pulled together to give you a sense of his life and purpose. It even takes several of his songs and traces them to their origins. Along the way you also learn a lot about the country as it was then and how it became what it is now. This is essential viewing for anyone with an interest in American music. Billy Bragg narrates. Snapper $16.99 on cd: TODD SNIDER THE WAS ME: THE BEST OF 1994-1998 Fans of Snider's recent work on the Oh Boy label will enjoy this compilation of his earlier formative years. The nineteen tracks are from the three albums that he did for MCA plus one unreleased track. All three of those albums were fun and innovative and this set gets it just right with the perfect balance of tracks from each one. This disc along with the last few studio albums would be the ideal blend for your Snider CD collection. HIP-O / MCA $12.99 SHEL SILVERSTEIN HIS WORDS, HIS SONGS, HIS FRIENDS: THE BEST OF This is a fitting tribute to this late writer and performer. Over the course of twenty-six cuts you'll get acquainted with his wit and wisdom. This set features him as well as the many acts that have had hits with the songs he's penned for them. So in addition to Shel you'll also hear his songs done by Johnny Cash, Bobby Bare, Dr. Hook, Willie Nelson and more. All of his signature tunes are here in one form or another. This is most unique set for a very unique artist who left us much too soon. Columbia Legacy $10.99 RODNEY CROWELL THE OUTSIDER This guy was this genre before it even had a name or was considered a scene. He burst onto the scene as a member of Emmylou's band and emerged as one of the best songwriters in country music. With his last couple of albums he has reestablished his credentials as a first rate recording artist. This new album finds him still writing top notch songs and in fine voice. He gets some help from longtime friends like Emmylou, John Prine and Buddy and Julie Miller among others. Columbia $13.99 STEPHEN STILLS MAN ALIVE Despite its title this is not a new live recording. If you ask me he blew a great title for a live album. (I must have already been at the bar when he called to ask me what to name his new album) I think old man Bush was in the White House the last time Stills recorded a solo album. Over the course of thirteen songs he covers many styles and works with several others. Those guests include Neil Young and Graham Nash on a few songs. The songs are both new and old. Some you'll know, but they are being redone to reflect how he sees them now. This recording is a natural for fans of his from any era really. A very welcome return from this seasoned veteran. Titan $15.99 RICHARD THOMPSON FRONT PARLOR BALLADS The advance sheet we got with this disc is full of superlatives and music industry jargon that is supposed to make us think that this is the album the world has been waiting for. Let's be honest, the world is going to keep turning at the same speed no matter what albums are released. However, the "musical world" can be knocked off of its axis from time to time. This all new solo acoustic album from Thompson is one of those times. It's just him (mainly) and his guitar taking us on a journey through thirteen new songs. Recorded pretty much live in his home studio (that would be his garage) with a bunch of yard tools and car parts as his only audience. At times you'll swear you're sitting on the seat of his riding mower as these songs come to life. He's been at it forever, here's hoping that he never quits. Cooking Vinyl $15.99 NICKEL CREEK WHY SHOULD THE FIRE DIE? Third time out for this talented trio that brought bluegrass music to a whole new crowd with their previous releases. Now that they've conquered that genre they have decided to move into a more acoustic pop sound that sounds simply wonderful. The instrumentation and melodies on this all new recording breaks new ground in the acoustic music world. This band is taking the next step and aren't looking back. This one is a major winner. Sugar Hill $14.99 ELIZA GILKYSON PARDISE HOTEL As we say in this business, "it's her time." Everything is finally in place for her to make that leap to household status. She has been around for many years and made some wonderful music. In the past few years she's continued to turn it up a notch with each release. On this one she hits it out of the park. Joining her are Shawn Colvin and Slaid Cleaves. Fans of her last album will be glad to know that she picks up where it left off. With this one she will certainly establish herself as one of the foremost songwriters currently working. Red House $15.99 CARRIE NEWCOMER REGULARS AND REFUGEES This is Carrie's ninth album (time really can fly I guess). It's a loose conceptual work centered around the patrons of a fictitious place called "Betty's Diner." Trust me, it's not some hard to follow storyline. The songs are merely the triumphs and sorrows of the patrons who frequent the place. Her gentle way with a melody and her always provocative lyrics make this a place we've probably visited ourselves a time or two. We all have our favorite watering hole (you do right?) full of colorful characters that we may or may not get to know. This is one of those discs that you can throw in the player and play straight through. Philo $15.99 ABIGIAL WASHBURN SONG OF THE TRAVELING DAUGHTER A traveling daughter is a lot easier to imagine than a pair of pants if you ask me. (You did ask me, right?) Fans of old time music that sounds uncorrupted by today's technology will fall in love with this album. It's a new recording, but its sound and sentiments harkens back to the mountains and the turn of some other century. Washburn and her banjo make time stand still. Produced by Bela Fleck, who also guests, she's come up with a debut that will be a benchmark recording. Her playing and vocals stay true to the music and makes it seem like there's nothing to it. She may well be this generations answer to Jean Ritchie. Nettwerk $14.99 COWBOY JUNKIES EARLY 21ST CENTURY BLUES This album of mostly covers (only two originals) finds them covering some their favorite songs from over the years. Not just any songs though, they all tackle the themes of war, violence, fear, greed and loss. So, that means that they are covering Dylan, Springsteen, Lennon and others who've weighed in on these subjects before. The sound is sparse and intimate for the most part and the songs are all given their trademark treatment. In case you haven't noticed albums dealing with these subjects are starting to become a new genre. Where have all the flowers gone indeed. But yes - thank goddess everyone got out alive. I understand 14 may have been injured but it doesn't sound like anyone was injured really badly. The plane skidded off the runway as it was landing. Passengers who were interviewed said the power failed just before it landed. There was also a helluva thunderstorm going on around that time and some witnesses say it looked like lightning hit the plane. Who knows? The important thing is - everyone's OK. Selfish me hopes it won't delay our flight tomorrow, because as of at least a little while ago, other takeoffs were being delayed and landings being diverted to Ottawa. (Glad no one was around!) You must, must hear this man sing!!!!! If he has been a topic of conversation up here before, my apologies. It wasn't clicking at the time!!!! Whoa!!!!!! My friend & I were singing along with her (she invited the audience to sing along so we did )... blissful! Then a few months later she showed up at my house!!!!!!!!!!!!! Smurf I'm so sad your only concert of hers was a bad one... I've heard she has (like Dylan) been not so good (substances or maybe meds or lack of meds or something chemical no doubt) in the past... but right now at this time she is very very good & so charming & please (its me who you finally listened to about Patty Griffin!) take another chance again if she comes your way (if you like her music, that really helps) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Aug 2005 01:03:35 -0400 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: HOSL Well put. Yes, those stories are like crystal clear, photo-realistic paintings. They also work together really well, like a showing in a gallery. Maybe HOSL is tied with Blue for my favorite Joni album. The music is so different from track to track, you can enjoy it twice through. Jim L'Hommedieu Covington, KY, US np: that Madeline P. chick. Unless it breaks up on re-entry, a shuttle comes back to Earth as a glider, powerless, and lands on wheels, in the desert. You quoted me out of context this time. In eight minutes it goes from the east coast of Florida to the Indian Ocean. I wonder how much water it turns into steam when it splashes down? If the shuttle "splashes down," it's another disaster, Jim. The days of space capsules that were dependant upon water landings has been over for about 35 years, I think. - - --Smurf > - ----------- Jim L'Hommedieu Ruling: no apology or retraction this time. ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2005 #300 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
