Mark in Sydney NP Conversation (Mikey Palms Remix) - Joni Mitchell ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Aug 2005 03:41:30 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Joni Covers Volume 67 - Many Rivers to Cross! Well, looks like it's time to let 'er Rrrrip - another page off the calendar, that is. And with another month comes yet another in the burgeoning series of "Joni Mitchell - Covers and Contributions" that started off so long ago on a whim and has now become a many many splendored thing. And just to show you how backed up I am with Joni covers, this volume includes several of the "River"'s that came out in Christmas of '04! Wonder how many we'll see this holiday season? Anyway. here's this month's Hit Parade: 1. Elaine Merrill - Michael From Mountains: When this one kicks off you think it's U2's "Where the Streets Have No Name" and it's pretty nice; mostly modeled on the Judy Collins cover with a bit less warmth than Judy but still pretty nice. 2. Charlie X - Another very nice track, an electric guitar instrumental patterned after the tasty Pat Martino cover from a number of years back. Hear a chunk of it here: http://cdbaby.com/cd/charliex 3. Volker Niehusmann & Christiane Weber - River 4. Volker Niehusmann & Christiane Weber -A Case Of You 5. Volker Niehusmann & Christiane Weber - Big Yellow Taxi: And here we have the final three tracks from "Another Blue", the Joni Mitchell tribute from this outstanding German duo. And all three of these are excellent (no surprise), Volker's guitar rings true and clear as does Christiane's vocal. And Volker plays a riff in BYT that reminds me of America's "California". 6. Steve Hall & Steve Donovan - Both Sides Now: It's the Battle of the Network Steves! This is actually another instrumental, a piano duet with some lush orchestration, a tad schmaltzy perhaps but pretty - a nice Joni cover to sip wine to. 7. A Perfect Circle - Fiddle And The Drum: Perfect Circle is the offshoot of Industrial art-rock band Tool. Tool's vocalist Maynard James Keenan is also the voice of PC, and on this track his vocals are razor sharp and multi-tracked to create some chilling harmonics which hearken to The Beach Boys, CSN, and other harmonic hallmarks. This came out last year right before the election on PC's "Emotive" which was a collection of anti-war pro-peace covers, most of which were pretty nasty (think Tori's 'Strange Little Girl' project) but this one is aw-right. 8. James Taylor - River: This studio version, which starts with "Good King Wenceslas" as opposed to "Jingle Bells" was featured last year on his website, and it resonates with that ease and warm glow that JT does so naturally. He truly takes this song and encompasses it in pure JT style. Nice. And yes James, you did make your baby cry. 9. Elizabeth Carthew - Both Sides Now: Australian singer/songwriter/musician (accordion-flugelhorn - trumpet) Elizabeth Carthew gives us another fine take on BSN, this one done in a Cabaret style with a simple piano backing, letting her voice take center stage which works well and a nice arrangement to boot. 10. David Lahm - Blue Motel Room: And speaking of great arrangements and fine playing, the JMDL's own Mr. Lahm turns in an outstanding recording of one of my favorite Joni tunes, featuring some solid solo work by Lew Tabakin on Tenor Sax and William Galison on Harmonica. Great stuff. This one's from David's 1999 'Jazz Takes On Joni Mitchell', a must for your collection if you don't already have it. 11. Don Mock - Song To A Seagull: Pardon the pops from an old LP...from 1978, this is a very original cover of the STAS title track, starting very soft with sax and acoustic guitar and then morphing into a progressive rock-jazz samba rhythm that just takes off for 5+ minutes (including a very tasty acoustic guitar solo). Sounds dated but in a good way if that makes any sense. 12. Sue Keller - River: After 11 nice tracks we hit our first roadblock on #67. Sue Keller's vocal sounds like Madge who used to soak those ladies' hands in Palmolive diswashing liquid way back when, plus she's overly dramatic and warbles and...well, you get the picture. Add to this a drummer who's not always on the beat and you have a polluted River. I will say that the piano here is nice; ebbs and flows and builds in all the right spots. 13. Cleveland Francis - Both Sides Now: Country/folksinger also known as Cleve Francis, has a nice clear voice, reminds me of Bobby Goldsboro, which is a surprise since he's African-American. 14. Shael Risman - A Case Of You: Hailing from Toronto, Shael was involved in the music business in Canada for 10 years or so, never officially released anything that I can tell, but recorded this very pretty take on ACOY. 15. Nothing But Treble - All I Want: Cornell's all-female acapella group, this is a bit different from the norm (meaning Big Yellow Taxi) and is very enjoyable. 16. Allison Crowe - River: Another holiday '04 release, from Allison's "Tidings" CD. One of my favorites; there is a pinch of Shawn in Allison's voice, except imo Allison has more punch and emotional bite in her vocals. She makes singing this song seem easy, and anyone who's tried it will tell you it's not. Hear a sample (and pick up a copy) at http://cdbaby.com/cd/crowe4. 17. Michael English - Both Sides Now: Not to be confused with Contemporary Christian Singer Michael English, this M.E. is a young pop singer from Europe (Wales, I believe). In any event, this is a pleasant take on the franchise, not overly cheesy but not overly memorable either. 18. Kjellerbandet - A Chair In The Sky: Perhaps some of you listened to this a week or so ago, if you did then you know that's a real winner. The arrangement and musicianship of this Norwegian Big Band is stellar and the vocals her are right on as well; while I probably prefer Joni's vocal, this arrangement and instrumentation are very exciting as they flow and build and seem to play as one body through the complex chord & tempo changes - sweet! 19. (Bonus Track) And there you go; I couldn't fit 20 tracks on this one because it's over 78 minutes long as is! Another fine member of the Joni cover compilation family - and still so much more to come! On another note, people have been telling me for years that I would love RLJ. Well, I went to see her last fall in Newburyport, Massachusetts, with Jody and her husband and a friend of theirs and it was just awful. From posts I've read here, RLJ has a history of extremely uneven performances. NRH had an instant effect on me in that it was the first Joni album I instantly connected with (as a full album) since DJRD. I think some of the reasons you mention above probably contributed to that, but at the time it was more just a matter of connecting more to her and the music than I had with the last three. However, last year I bought the Geffen box, and I have to say that at this point it didn't stand out quite as much (although still my favorite of the four). Maybe some of the musical ideas on DED and (especially)CitR needed some time to fully grab me. While I prefer the 70s releases, I did listen to all of these albums a lot in the 80s, so there was also the feeling of seeing a friend that I hadn't seen in some time. > I think the best example of this balance is the track, > "Windfall (Everything for Nothing)." It's my favorite > song on the album, but I cannot tell what it is > exactly about. Anyone care to shed some light? As noted, it's about her former maid (Joni has said this unambiguously), but the exact details are more speculative. Then later, I saw that he was in the FRONT ROW, not 3 feet away from Rickie! How did you get those tickets, Jack??? Anyway, thanks for the great review, Mia. I agree that she should have done more songs from her new album, which I love. I'm glad she did "Evening of my Best Day." What a beautiful song. I looked up this tour on her website and she only played a few select cities. I can't believe Milwaukee was included...what a wonderful gift! One story I have to share: My brother-in-law was sort of dragged to the concert by my sister and told me later that he had no expectations going in but Rickie just "blew him away!" Quite a compliment because he's a very discerning music critic! I also agree that her banter was fun. During 'Chuck E', when she got to the part that goes, "Is he here? I looked in the drug store..." people were still clapping and she said, "I don't think you should clap during this part. You can snap your fingers." She also informed the audience that she wasn't going to come out for an encore; we were to just to clap and go home after she was finished. I love it! She had a stellar group of jazz musicians - Denver's best - supporting her. The arrangements were fresh and unique, including a "string-trio" version of Amelia. I thought her opening statement really caught the essence of Joni and asked Lynn if I could include it in the Library. She graciously emailed me the text this morning. Check the Library for it. Lynn hopes to take her Joni tribute on the road. Don't miss it!
