The "three pack" is a fairly common sales tool for selling quantities of stock (several Dylan sets have been released in this form). I don't think NRH had gone to "mid price" in Europe at that point. These multi-disc sets are quite common in the UK; sometimes they contain two albums, sometimes three. That said, I haven't seen this Joni 3CD set in stores for a while. I never really got the point of the Geffen boxset, other than a means to make money from the same old rope. I think part of it is that briefly in the 60's, the music business was still more about music than business. It's not like people stopped writing good stuff (although I do think the 60's was a renaissance period)-just easier to sell the flavor of the month. Now it's swung all the way to the business side, but there are still writers out there; Ani D, some of the rappers, or (fill in the blank). Maybe not the level of Dylan or Joni, but nobody was then, either... RR There are several songwriters around who are managing to keep head above water in the cutthroat business, surviving today's demands to be MTV-compatible, unit-shifting content providers while maintaing some kind of artistic independence: Ryan Adams, Aimee Mann (thanks for the gig review, Jamie), Eels, Ben Folds, Rufus Wainwright, Tom McRae...to name just a few. They'll never be as groundbreaking or original in the same ways that the 60s troubadors might have been, simply because those artists got in first and had the chance to break more fresh ground. But the art is not yet dying. The corporations do their best to stifle artistry and homogenise everything, but 2005's been good for music so far if you don't look in the direction of the charts. First, as appetizers, the minor references: In "Steely Dan: The Complete Guide to Their Music" by Brian Sweet )1998 & 2004 Omnibus Press -- this is *hardly* a "complete guide, btw, it's 6"x4" and 79 pages long, but it does have some interesting tidbits -- anyway, in the Dr. Wu entry: "Jeff Porcaro tried to emulate John Guerin's drumming on Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark, and that new Bosendorfer piano is rich, warm and flawlessly played by Michael Omartian. Four minutes in an aural paradise." Second, in the booklet to Manhattan Transfer's wonderful 2-cd set "The Manhattan Transfer Anthology: Down in Birdland" ) 1992 Rhino Records, Janis Siegal is quoted as saying "Every girl my age was flipped over Laura Nyro and Joni Mitchell. I tried to emulate them in my songwriting. About the time we started Laurel Canyon [a harmony-vocal group formed by Siegal and some friends], I also switched to 12-string acoustic instead of my usual six-string..." Having met Tim Hauser and been introduced by him to jazz singing, that was apparently the end of her singer-songwriter phase. But then, I opened up the Sedaris book and got to 8th chapter and the name jumped out at me: Hejira!!! Could it be? Yup, without ever *explicitly* tying the name of the chapter to Joni, he says; "It wasn't anything I had planned on, but at the age of twenty-two, after dropping out of my second college and traveling across the country a few times, I found myself back in Raleigh, living in my parents' basement. After six months spent waking at noon, getting high, and listening to the same Joni Mitchell record over and over again, I was called by my father into his den and told to get out..." He does leave: "My sister had an apartment over by the university and said I could come stay with her as long as I didn't bring my Joni Mitchell record." Really! Some families! The heartbreaking part of the story is that David had assumed he'd been kicked out for being a failure, for being a drug addict, for being a sponge, but not for the real reason -- because he was gay. His mother, heartbroken, drives over to the sister's apartment and he joins her in the car as she sobs. He *still* at this point doesn't know the real reason why his father kicked him out. The last paragraph: "The car light was on and I wondered what the passing drivers thought as they watched my mother sob. [snip] Did they see us as just another crying mother and her stoned gay son, sitting in a station wagon and listening to a call-in show about birds, or did they imagine, for just one moment, that we might be special?" This breaks my heart, although I, thank god, did not have such a father -- we were great pals -- and if it helps any of you, David and *his* father made up long ago and are friends again. In other Joni cover news, West Coast diva Lorraine Gervais (she's released Blue Motel Room and sent me an EXCLUSIVE recording of A Case of You previously) is covering Edith & The Kingpin on her upcoming CD - hear a two-minute clip at: http://www.lorrainegervais.com/pages/samples.html That's all for now...of course hot on the heels of the well-received Volume 66 we'll have another impressive bouquet (or maybe Banquet is a better word) of Joni covers to feast on in a week or so. Anyway, yeah, I think he's one of ours, and the basic premise has been around in various shades for awhile. Jonibashing in Canada's Reader's Digest website, now on roberto holliston's joni-rant hey walt: first, let me express my happiness about your recent negative diagnosis and my deep appreciation for your honesty in sharing the trials you've been going through. i hope you'll continue to share. second, i must defend my friend robert holliston, who indeed has been a member of the list for many years, usually signing his posts 'roberto'. though he's not currently subscribed, he first joined the list seven or so years ago and has attended many jonifests, both at ashara's and at full moon, sharing his killer piano skills and warmth with many list members. personally, his friendship has been one of the finest gifts this list has brought me. he most recently visited joni list friends in boston and new york in may of this year (he lives in victoria bc) about his musical bona fides, he toured internationally as a classical pianist in his 20s, turned to accompanying (due to a dislike for the solo musician life) and is on the keyboard faculty at the victoria conservatory of music and is chorus-master and repetiteur for pacific opera victoria. he's also a huge joni fan, having seen both the 'shadows and light' tour and the dylan/van morrison tour in 1998. as for his rant about la mitchell, it's nothing many of us haven't felt and said. joni's a great musical artist, but a monster of ego, and for those of us who read her every eruption a little too closely, she's become very tiresome. i mean how many times have we heard heard her say: 1) there's no one making anything original in music any more; 2) no one has been spreading the alarm about political trends like she has; and 3) she doesn't believe in feminism because [insert self-serving and dishonest excuse here]? i could quibble with roberto's harshness, but i think he nails joni's hypocrisy, this women who rails about the music biz that has brought her so much comfort and acclaim. and there are indeed times when her music doesn't live up to her personal puffery, her last studio album: 'taming the tiger' is decent enough with some truly fine songwriting, but its production is one of the most lackluster efforts of the last 20 years by any mainstream artist, final proof that joni should never again ask for a solo production credit on an album. yet if you read her interviews of the time, you'd think she invented the wheel. deluded, self-absorbed megalomaniac sounds about right. i'm smiling as i write this. though i still subscribe to the list and read nearly every post, i don't post often. threads that go by do affect me; i just pulled out shawn colvin's 'steady on' and had a lovely listen. there are a lot of great musicians in the world, passionate, talented, innovative, and often quite sophisticated politically. many musicians complain about the state of the music biz and the world, some of them do something about it. all joni ever does is complain. and she hasn't innovated in a very, very long time. even now, if she doesn't feel the urge to write, i wish she'd keep on exploring the american songbook. i think her voice is a miracle of careworn, hard-earned beauty right now. patrick np - etta james, this bitter earth (from blue gardenia) - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org]On Behalf Of littlebreen@comcast.net Sent: Wednesday, July 20, 2005 7:11 PM To: joni@smoe.org Subject: Woo-hoo! I know we've discussed this before and I think there still might be a need for this information in our archives, so I've copied the information from the book below. Note that this was a real pain to try to format, and when I try to change anything below my computer freezes (three times so far!!) so I'm not touching it this time, even though I'd like it to look a little neater! My apologies in advance, if this comes out rather askew. Hope this either helps, or is of interest to some people on the list.
