I love "A Few Small Repairs" too and I think it is a creative peak but I am sure there are fans out there of her other albums. I read that her life was in turmoil when she made "A Few Small Repairs" and although I don't want to sound like I delight in the brilliance of albums when the artist is in a personal nadir, I truly appreciated "A Few Small Repairs" and the majestic and sublime sadness of most songs. Of course when "Whole New You" came out as a follow up where Colvin got married, had a baby, etc. the songs were engaging but lacked a certain kick that I can't quite describe in words. In the "Stormy Weather" tribute album, Colvin sang a rather difficult song called "But Beautiful" but in that performance she showed a refreshing tremolo in her voice that I didn't really know she possessed. While I consider Paula Cole, Bjork, Sandra Bernhard and of course Joni's performances as stand-outs, Colvin's rendition of "But Beautiful" will make me a fan of her second "Cover Girl" album where she'll tackle standards. You'd think it would be "Covers Girl" wouldn't you? Maybe, but "A Few Small Repairs" is my favorite, too, and the only Shawn CD I own. I guess because I'm so fascinated by original songs and I adore John Leventhal's production and musical contributions. I first heard him on Patty Larkin's Stranger's World, another great record IMO. Everything he does is beautiful. I love Viktor Frankl also! His book Man's Search for Meaning has been something I've drawn from for years. As I learned more about Jewish philosophy, Israelite thought shaped my understanding of myself. I was drawn to the idea that, "the Jews were an earthy people" and also to their beliefs that we were formed from the earth, will return to the earth, and will bodily resurrect again filled with God's spirit as described in Yechezqel, Ezekiel 37. I understand the Israelite belief of no demarcation between the flesh and the soul (basar and nephes), belief in the person as an indivisible unity, one... unlike the Platonic and Aristotelian philosophies. Hearing stories of dying people seeing recognizable people in they beyond is very edifying to my beliefs so I'm grateful to Marianne and Lucy for sharing. As a childlike Dominican sister said a few weeks ago, we are all going to cross over to the other side one day... and I wonder, how much of that side is this side right now, just seen as "thru a glass darkly"? Joni's song LOVE is in my mind. Children remind me of the Israelites. Adults tend to have fractions in them. My prayer is to be more like a child. I attended part of the International Children's Literature Conference here in Winnipeg in June (met jmdler Richard Flynn there). I was mesmerised by a wonderful dramatic presentation; a film about the play which was performed in the UK over a span of two years. The scene we saw had many of us in tears, it was so moving. There's an enchanting feeling a la Midsummer Night's Dream somehow; whilst the subject matter is very different, it certainly has that sensibility. Many great kids books to recommend; I especially loved all of my daughter's growing up years where I experienced the great joy of revisiting many of my old characters and stories; a chance to relive and reread many favourite books all over again, through fresh eyes. I remember reading Anne of Green Gables to Miranda; every word, precious. For those of you with children, hold them close to your heart, always. You just never know when they will need to draw upon all those years of the love you give; so be mindful when she/ he is counting on you. love, Mags - --------------------------------- Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Jul 2005 16:19:00 -0400 From: "rflynn@frontiernet.net" Subject: re: rowling / potter NJC now Philip Pullman / His Dark Materials I second mags's recommendations--both of the superb Pullman trilogy and her advice about reading to your children and holding them close in your heart. The charge is only appropriate if the operative has been overseas within the past 5 years. 2. The person who compromises the agent must be aware that they are undercover, (that the government has taken steps to keep them that way). According to the talking heads at WSJ, the CIA operative hasn't been overseas in more than 5 and 1/2 years. It turns out that Rove didn't mention her name. Reckless he may be but he'll most likely weather the storm. To the talking heads at WSJ, it sounds like the mainstream press (left) are dumbing it down to keep the "story" going. They wouldn't do that just to 'sell newspapers', would they? :) Lurking but not napping, Jim PS, I'm glad there were no tanker trucks full of petrol close to that double decker bus last week. For the longest time I had a modegreen for this song "You've got tubes in your eyes" What was I thinking, the ding-dang lyrics were printed right inside the album.
