Lucy, I only saw the remarks of Stuart Varney on Fox. I don't know if you are familiar with him. He is British and usually appears on a show about the stock markets and the economy. I totally read his remarks as his own way of saying FU to the attackers, that they will not destroy the economy (which is really more than just about "captial" - it is about peoples' livelihoods and community) and will not defeat us. I looked at it as an example of that British "resilience" that everyone has admired since the attacks. > I do not condemn, and cannot condemn these "terrorists" for the evil deeds > they do, for they themselves are wronged by their elders and their warped > leaders, who twist the words of Islam into spears of hate. I think they are terribly pathetic but cannot bring myself to have sympathy or make excuses for them. I think what most people condemn is their actions. It doesn't matter to me what their beliefs are - it has nothing to do with real religion. It is something else. I have not personally witnessed the prejudice you say you have seen against a whole group of people in general. Maybe because where I live is so multi-cultural, and the majority of immigrants are here because they actually like living and working in the U.S. It is confusing to me that you say they are brainwashed by fanatical zealots yet you also have seemed to imply that the bombers are part of some special ops group working for Bush or other interests. It's hard to figure that some non-U.S. citizens of middle eastern background would be so enamored or brainwashed by Bush's aims that they would blow themselves up for it. Your humanist perspective and intentions are right and good, Lucy. I wish there was an easy, non-violent way to stop them. As of July 12th, 2005: - -Overall low Army numbers indicate the services will fall behind their fiscal year targets - -The Army National Guard missed its new-soldier recruiting goal for the ninth straight month in June and is nearly 19,000 soldiers below its authorized strength - -The Pentagon has significantly reduced its use of all guard and reserve forces in the last two years, dropping from 224,000 from all services mobilized in April 2003, during the height of the Iraq invasion, to 138,000 now - -The regular Army has recruited 47,121 soldiers, or 86 percent of its goal of 54,935 for this point in the year - -The Air National Guard is 17 percent behind its year-to-date goal of 7,619 recruits. - -Navy Reserve down 8% Source: U.S. Department of Defense ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Jul 2005 08:28:20 -0500 From: Jerry Notaro Subject: Rosie's Cruise at Sea Performing on Rosie9s Family Values Cruise: Backed by Robbie Roth on guitar, Gavin Creel offered a 45-minute set of original tunes he penned with Roth. The Tony-nominated actor possesses a smooth, clear and rangy tenor and an honest delivery that is extremely appealing. His voice is a blend of rock, folk and theatrical styles, and his songs of love, acceptance and political protest are catchy, clever and often touching. In addition to his own work, the long-haired Creel also covered "A Case of You," offering a fine version of the Joni Mitchell classic, which speaks of a "lonely painter/ [who] lives in a box of paints/ I'm frightened by the devil/ and drawn to those who ain't afraid." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Jul 2005 09:33:22 EDT From: LCStanley7@aol.com Subject: peace through art despite war Do you know the German artist Kathe Kollwitz? Let's imagine this & keep it strong in our vision. Every mother wants this. No matter what religion, nationality. Every mother wants this. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Jul 2005 13:19:02 -0400 From: "Lama, Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Re: London NJC now lack of volunteers for armed service Hi Kakki, IMO, Iraq has *become* an Al Queda issue because the US made their borders permeable. During the invasion, we didn't secure the borders (along with a dozen other things when we were concentrating on securing the Oil Ministry building.) Al Queda wasn't an issue in Iraq until President Bush linked them. By invading, we allowed Al Queda in. When the President linked Iraq to Al Queda before the war, Iraq's presence became a self fulfilling prophecy (for me). They are there NOW. In an unintended way, Iraq became a lightning rod to focus the jihad in one place. It's good to see you around again. To cut a long story short, I was reminded from various things Joni-related of the JMDL - still the best online community I've ever encountered. I've been turning a friend of mine who is a lapsed 70s Joni fan back onto the wonders of Hissing and LOTC, and the old embers sparked up again. When I started enthusing about SIQUOMB to them, I thought back to the years I was on the list before. Don Row and his DED defences, Catherine, Colin, Bob, Wally, Azeem, Jamie...this people and their names have stayed with me even if the small details haven't always. Plus many, many other great people who posted regularly, wittily, enlighteningly (if that's a word!?) and of course so very articulately. I'm not sure how many "old-timers" ;) are still around, lurking or taking centre-stage; it's been so long for me that even trying to navigate the list archives led me down several blind alleys, attempting to figure out when I had to bow out and leave such a wonderful place behind. It was sometime in 2001, as far as my failing memory can tell me! Hey, who ya calling an old-timer, ya young whippersnapper? Long time, no hear from. In fact, so long that you're probably going to have to tell us how you first got into Joni and all that. Some of us are old-timers, others new-timers, and some are two-timers. But here we are. Welcome back!
