It has been a lot harder than I thought it was going to be because I have been preparing for my brother Willy's death since last August. He had one of his lungs removed at that time. Then he had surgery for a fistula that connected his bladder and colon which prompted my trip to Detroit last November. He has gone steadily downhill since then and according to my older brother Don and sister Linda it was a very horrid death. Don called me today to recount some of his last hours listening to music and being comforted by Don and Linda. They were there when he took his last breath. It was very painful for me not to be there with him and also not even to be able to attend the memorial service last Saturday. Because Hurricane Dennis was a threat I felt it was more important to stay home and protect my family. It was a hard thing to do. Willy was 56 years old and way to young to die. He fought in Vietnam even though he did not want to, he served his country with great courage and was awarded many medals for his bravery in action. The sad thing is that this country was not there for him when he needed medical care. Do to the poor medical care provided for Vets contributed greatly to why I think we lost him so young. He hated the VA hospital and said that the treatment was horrible there. He was misdiagnosed and had to wait months for appointments, etc. Our so called leaders need to take a hard look at themselves and figure out a way to take care of our own especially after they ask our sons, fathers, brothers, and husbands to take care of us. I also want to beg any of you who are still smoking cigarettes to please stop. Stop for yourself so that you will not be MORE susceptible to such a horrid death. And do it for the people that love you so that they will not have to suffer with you. Thanks for so many emails both private and public and may God Bless you all.
