It is something Londoners have got used to - eight years ago a car outside my flat was bombed at 1am by the IRA, not sure if everyone remembers their last bombing spree when they bombed royal target (not that I used to live in a royal target but I lived in the same borough so they bombed Brompton Cemetery outside my flat). Yes, London has had 30 years of being target for terrorists. I remember during that time, a bus was a target but it was thought to be accidental as it was empty and the man blew himself up. It must've hit a pothole. They stopped soon after that one. I guess the IRA weren't into suicide bombing like the Judean People's Republic, or the People's Republic of Judea or the Popular Front of the Judean Republic or whatever they are calling themselves... Great performance, Jamie. Here are two "W & G" episodes with Joni content in the Joni in Fiction section of JMDL.com: Will & Grace Will and Grace go to Paradise bar, the site of their first meeting, but the place has become a parking lot. Ever the wit, Will says, "Wouldn't you know it. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot." As this scene aired, MGVal reports that before she had a chance to respond, "My kids looked up and yelled, 'Joni Mitchell. Mom!'" Contributed by MGVal 01/03/2003 Will & Grace 2000 This episode, entitled Sweet and Sour Charity, originally aired in the US on April 4, 2000. Will and Grace win front row tickets to a Joni concert from a contest on a radio call-in show. Grace sings a little bit of Free Man in Paris and even says that Joni is her favorite performer. Although Joni never appears in on screen, we eventually learn that Grace gets booted from the concert by Joni for singing too loudly. The one thing I did see was a rather embarrassing still picture of him talking to actual world leaders, looking like a deer in the headlights... Considering that the outcomes (little and very late) of the Summit were all prearranged, the shift to concentrate focus on the terror in London was immaterial. I normally think of young people as idealists. From your points, they seem as deeply conflicted as their parents. It was amazing to me that Main Street Amerika didn't care when time and again the press showed "the evidence" was wrong (at best). Wrapping "a project" in the flag confuses almost everyone. So, Main Street Amerika supports "the troops"; Main Street Amerika supports "the flag"; Main Street Amerika supports "the president's plan," but few enlist. I wonder if future administrations will back away from war because they lack personnel. I doubt it. They'll probably re-institute the draft in order to execute "the will of the American people". :( Finally, I don't think young people are wrong to stay out of the military. I applied for concientious objector status in '73. My request was denied. Jim L'Hommedieu Covington, KY, US Jerry said, >American teens have spoken, and they want George W. Bush for president. Nearly 1.4 million teens voted in the nation's largest mock election, and the Republican incumbent wound up with 55 percent of the total votes cast & 44 percent said that the war in Iraq was the most important issue. Bush for president. Nearly 1.4 million teens voted in the nation's largest mock election, and the Republican incumbent wound up with 393 electoral votes and 55 percent of the total votes cast. In an exit poll taken after making their pick for president, teens weighed in on the issues most important to them. A majority of respondents-- 44 percent-- said that the war in Iraq was the most important issue. Well, where are they? Why are they not stepping up to the plate and going to Iraq? Who did they think was going to fight this war? Jerry." Me now: afraid I agree with Jerry on this one, on at least one point. Kids (in the U.S., anyway) may be generous with their time and money, but, in my experience and based on what I've read, they're also much more conservative politically than my generation was. They also seem, to me, *more* inclined to follow those in authority, not less. They do, as a group, support Bush. On the "bigger picture": this may just be one of those examples of something sounding great in theory: right up until the part where YOU have to make some serious sacrifices to make it a reality. But, in the kids' defense, I'm not sure I blame even the ones who support the war for not signing up. Troops are being held over, and/or re-deployed. Some soldiers, sailors and airmen literally can't leave active-duty status. According to many sources, they're fighting with inadequate armor and other equipment, which is jeopardizing their chances of survival in combat. And it's precisely these kids who likely have a bird's-eye view of their same-age friends and former classmates who have returned from the fighting minus arms, and legs, and the upper layers of their skin, and their peace of mind. In all, before all this started, they probably had less of a sense than anybody else of just what it would involve. Now, they probably have a *better* sense than just about anyone else of exactly what it will take. And they're declining to sacrifice themselves, under current conditions. Mary. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Jul 2005 19:34:55 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: loggins & messina NJC If you once were a fan or just love the music genre & tight harmonies, I recommend you check out the tour that is in its early stages & may be coming to a city in your area.
