The concern for me and my loved ones was just lovely to receive as it was when Steph and I were targeted just before Christmas. We live 40 miles north of London and all our friends in London are okay and getting on with it in the way I imagine our grandparents did in the Blitz. I find it so desperately sad that some people feel so unheard and angry that they have to blow themselves and others up to feel they have a voice. Those of you who know Steph and I will also know of our love and association with the Olympic Movement. A lot of people who have never been to an Olympics only see the money, drugs and the corruption (very much like the Ancient Games, really) but be on the streets when an Olympic flame passes by and I defy anyone to not be moved. For Steph and I it gives a message of Hope and of a better, unified world - so I am carrying my Olympic torch and my London 2012 pin with me today. Thank you all for being out there and being so lovely and it all comes because (here comes the Joni content) JONI IS BEST AND WE LOVE HER, Much love to all, Anita xx ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Jul 2005 06:07:36 EDT From: Gertus@aol.com Subject: Re: london In a message dated 08/07/2005 08:02:29 GMT Standard Time, owner-joni-digest@smoe.org writes: > From: atel79@dsl.pipex.com > Subject: Re: london > > Has anyone heard from Martin? My son had planned to travel to Heathrow by train and tube in order to catch a plane to South Africa where he begins a round the world trip. Luckily he managed to get there by road. It was only a matter of time before this happened, the only surprise being that it didn't happen sooner. Lucy is right in blaming our government and the American government in angering terrorists throughout the world. We will be paying the price for their actions for a very long time to come, I fear. I read his comments too and I just thought, "more power to him if that's what he wants to do" but I knew I could never follow that path. Isn't this what the "Avante Garde" movement also tried to do way back when David? In 1975, my choir teacher and vocal instructor had us do several "Avante Garde" pieces that year. Also, when I was in the 1975 Virginia All-State Chorus, our guest director, Frank Pooler chose a piece called "The Creation". Instead of notes, there were "x's" on the musical score. There were cues for flashlights to flicker and the "x" notes were placed pitch-wise where we were supposed to emulate certain sounds. It had an ending of sorts because it was a musical score but it reminds me of what Wayne Shorter is speaking of in a way. The specific focus wasn't just the armed forces in general, but specifically medical officers. They can't recruit them. Medical personnel, of course, would make a lot more money in the private sector than in the armed forces, but the story does go along with Jerry's stats. One of the possible reasons suggested for the low volunteer rate (apart from the obvious one - who wants to go and possibly get killed?) is that young people of today have been brought up to question things. Question authority, question your parents, your teachers, your politicians. I can personally attest, as I'm sure a lot of other parents can, that kids today simply don't do as their told. No more, "Do as I say, not as I do." Ask a lot of questions, but mostly, "Why?" This can be problematic at times, when you find yourself caught in an argument with your kid that you can't wiggle out of, but ultimately, I think it's to the good. Kids today aren't inclined to follow orders blindly. And they are very generous with their time, volunteering to raise funds or to participate in programs to help others. I'm sure there are many people who think today's kids are spoiled brats, but that's not (most of the time!) what I see when I look at my kids and their cousins and friends. I believe they really want to make the world a better place for everyone. Having said that, I'm equally convinced that they would, if they felt it was the only resort, do whatever it takes to defend themselves, their families, friends and country from anyone that wants to do them harm; but I also believe they would try other, peaceable means first.
