She was on a bill of Fruit (a 3-girl band from Australia), Jane Siberry, Jonatha, and Joan Osborne. It was an odd venue for this type of show and it was very poorly attended I'm sorry to say. With bungee jumpers screaming behind the stage, which prompted her to remark something like, "I'd hate to do that strapped in with someone. What if I peed in my pants?" Ha! But the small crowd was enthusiastic. She sounded in great voice (when does she not?) and once again her guitar just sounded so full and wonderful. I was disappointed that she did not come off to the side tent and sell CDs and autograph them. I would have loved to gush to her personally. I hope she'll be coming to a "normal" venue soon, Lindsay ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 03 Jul 2005 15:30:30 -0500 From: "mia ortlieb" Subject: Donovan - - and other summer shows, njc Saw Donovan the other night - anyone remember him? He was really entertaining, and I had a ton of fun. He really brings out the dorky white chick in me - - (Is that bad??) Donovan came out before my time, but I always heard him on the classic/oldies stations and always thought that this is great salvageable music. Can anyone tell me how Donovan was considered when he came out? Did the masses like him, or think he was a dork, or what....? I was surprised to see him on the lineup at Milwaukee's own Summerfest - the world's largest music festival (I didn't know he was still around). Btw, this is a great ten day fest for music lovers, as there can be approximately ten different musical acts going on at the same time - if you don't like something, move on to the next stage - all for the low price of eleven or twelve bucks! (sometimes free deals are offered). I also saw the Black Crowes,Tom Petty, and David Lee Roth who did nothing but classic Van Halen tunes! A rockin' local band called the BoxKars also played a good show. I'm also a sucker for the Ecuadorian music stage. Lucinda Williams is tonight, and I'm gearin' up to see the Pixies/Weezer on Thursday and Jerry Cantrell's new band next Sat. There is so much music here that it would take pages to list all the bands... I also scored fourteenth row tickets to see Rickie Lee Jones at the cozy, historic Pabst Theater. I can't wait! Music is so incredibly therapeutic. One of my favorite love, peace, and harmony songs is "Get Together" - I think originally covered by the Youngbloods. Joni covered it, too: http://www.jmdl.com/guitar/tab.cfm?id=298 Love is but the song we sing, And fear's the way we die You can make the mountains ring Or make the angels cry Know the dove is on the wing And you need not know why C'mon people now, Smile on your brother Ev'rybody get together Try and love one another right now Some will come and some will go We shall surely pass When the one that left us here Returns for us at last We are but a moments sunlight Fading in the grass C'mon people now, Smile on your brother Ev'rybody get together Try and love one another right now If you hear the song I sing, You must understand You hold the key to love and fear All in your trembling hand Just one key unlocks them both It's there at your command C'mon people now, Smile on your brother Ev'rybody get together Try and love one another right now Right now Right now! Calif last weekend-at the Kate Wolf Memorial Folk Festival, but I was out of town and missed it. When Donovan became popular, there was only AM radio, which played everything from The Stones and Streisand to Johnny Cash- on the same Top 40 station-no narrow formats like today. Donovan's hit songs were mostly the pop/psychedelia that was new at the time, and, to my ears, pleasant and creative enough to be a good thing. I'm sure some people dismissed him as a lightweight, or England's Dylan wannabe; his first record, Catch The Wind, was a thinly disguised Dylan ripoff. But I think he found his own niche, plus he was friends with The Beatles and went to India on their famous meditation excursion. He was part of the sixties scene, man. I am also amazed that I like it! but I do....the most psychedelic stuff especially. In fact the other night I quoted Donovan to someone looking for California-specific lyrics.."The Trip". "We was a-d-d-d-drivin' d-downtown L.A., About a-midnight hour And it almost b-b-blew my mind, I got caught in a coloured shower". That kind of his stuff: "Hey Gyp" - "I'll buy you a Chev-ro-let"..wayyyyy tasty somehow..not sure why. Disconcerting, huh? Musically, things all lead into other things (for me anyway), and oddly enough, back in the late 70's, I came to Bert Jansch and that stuff THROUGH Donovan, rather than vice versa! so to me, no shame in liking Don. Hey the Beatles hung out with him - he musta been pretty cool. Ever hear the version of Hurdy Gurdy Man where he includes the lost verse written by George? Anyway, its all jingle jangle crystalline deeeee-licious, I think. Enjoy without shame! :) Em - --- mia ortlieb wrote: > Saw Donovan the other night - anyone remember him?
