Hard to believe that HALF the year 2005 has come and gone, but so it has and so far we've come out with SIX outstanding Joni Covers compilations...so let's not break the string, let's let the good times roll! So here I present for your listening pleasure Volume 66 in the "perpetual Joni Covers Train", with a thanks to my good pal Monica for her contribution this month. Let's get this rig out of neutral and start travelling, travelling travelling along Route "66", shall we? 1. Roxana Amed - Amelia: This one was shared last weekend, I hoped most of you took advantage of the opportunity to listen to this fine Argentinian jazz singer's version of one of Joni's finest, with lyrics translated by Pedro Aznar. Joni's LA agency sent Roxana this note: "Joni has loved the recording (...) She wants you to know that she thought the song was beautifully done and wanted me to pass on her thank you to the artist for this wonderful rendition." 2. Hullabaloos - Big Yellow Taxi: Still more college acapella, this one from UVA in Charlottesville, VA done as a cover of the Counting Crows arrangement. Pretty cool - great voices. 3. Naked Voices - Chinese Cafe: More acapella, this time from Bristol, England. This is actually the second version of this song from this group, the previous one was on a live CD. 4. Cyril Paul & Ensemble - Both Sides Now: Well, this one just kind of ambles along, sounds like a campfire version or something - hey, let's make s'mores! 5. Gemma Hasson - Urge For Going: This track is from Gemma's LP released in 1975. A nice vocal with simple accompaniment. 6. Nina Katrina - Twisted: Like most Twisteds, this is very fun, playful and features some multi-tracked vocals ala Joni and a nice lead guitar solo. 7. Erin Malone - Chelsea Morning: Features some cool bongos throughout...crazy man, crazy! If I'm not mistaken this cover is based on Gloria Loring's arrangement. In any regard, there's a few different flourishes thrown in here to keep it interesting. 8. Lapislazuli - Um Uns Herum: A nice trio of femme voices singing in Dutch, I think. And more bongos, except this time they seem tossed in at random and not always in synch with the voices - still I like this one a lot. 9. Volker Niehusmann & Christiane Weber - All I Want 10. Volker Niehusmann & Christiane Weber - Little Green 11. Volker Niehusmann & Christiane Weber - Blue: And here's a "Blue Threefer" from this German duo, and like the tracks on the last 2 discs these are excellent. All I Want (1:14 of it anyway) is available to listen to on Volker's website, so if you have a notion to, check it out: http://www.sonicmarket.de/index.php?rubrik=shop&cdid=12 12. The Bloom'in Grass - Both Sides Now: I have to say when I got this off eBay I figured it would be a bluegrass take, but it ends up being a very slow, lazy, acoustic guitar instrumental. Not enough going on to keep my interest. 13. Julie WIlson - Big Yellow Taxi: Pop/Country vocalist from Australia, Julie offers up a solid and very spirited cover of BYT, though pretty much a mirror of Joni's, it does feature a nice organ riff. 14. Dan Aitken & Friends - Urge For Going: From a 2004 collection of Celtic music, a lovely rendition of one of my fave Joni tunes...and not just me, with 47 covers (and counting) it's one of the top tens. 15. Dennis Buck - I Don't Know Where I Stand: This is a real oddball, because it comes from an Instructional Dance CD - this is the background music for you to practice doing plies (plee-yays) and it's really lovely, unfortunately it's only 1:27 long, or short as the case may be. 16. George Schutz - Both Sides Now/Suzanne: A pretty & simple solo piano medley of the classic Joni & Leonard Cohen songs, sounds like a recital piece almost. 17. Jansen & Tilanus - River: An acapella quartet/kwartet from Holland; two male voices, two female. Pretty and a nice arrangement - I guess when River is sung as a group as opposed to a solo it loses some of its lyrical strength; still, this crew has some outstanding talent and a wonderful ear for harmony - hear a little bit of it at: http://www.music-and-art.demon.nl/jansen&tilanus/ 18. Penny Lim & The Silverstones - The Circle Game: Inspired by Hong Kong pop singer Agnes Chan, many many Asian femmes have recorded TCG, all to Jerry's delight. Poor Penny has a larger dialect/language barrier than most, plus the fact that she's flat every third or fourth note doesn't weigh in her favor either. Deliciously cheesy! 19. David Lahm - In France They Kiss On Main Street: Nothing cheesy about this one! Several months ago, David gave me the A-OK to sneak a recording or two of his into the mix, and I'm delighted to do so. The arrangements are always fresh and original, the players are state of the art, and the recordings are a delight. This one comes from the "More Jazz Takes On Joni Mitchell" release and is simply fabulous - takes Joni's jazz/pop arrangement and transforms it into pure jazz ecstasy. If you're uninitiated to David's work, you're really denying yourself some instant bliss. 20. Roxana Amed, Amelia (English): Which brings us back to the beginning, only this time Roxana gives us her English-language version of Amelia - for my money the Catelan language version is much more soulful and inspired, but this is nice as well. And there it is...20 tracks, 20 stops along the Roadway of Joni covers. Let me know if you're interested in getting a copy of it, and you too can become a prisoner of the fine white lines of the Covers 66 freeeeeeeeee....freeway. Gentle Arms Of Eden By Dave Carter, offa "Drum Hat Buddha" On a sleepy endless ocean when the world lay in a dream there was rhythm in the splash and roll, but not a voice to sing so the moon shone on the breakers and the morning warmed the waves till a single cell did jump and hum for joy as though to say this is my home, this is my only home this is the only sacred ground that i have ever known and should i stray in th dark night alone rock me goddess in the gentle arms of eden then the day shone bright and rounder til the one turned into two and the two into ten thousand things, and old things into new and on some virgin beach head one lonesome critter crawled and he looked about and shouted out in his most astonished drawl this is my home ... then all the sky was buzzin and the ground was carpet green and the wary children of the wood went dancin in between and the people sang rejoicing when the field was glad with grain this song of celebration from their cities on the plain this is my home ... now there's smoke across the harbor, and there's factories on the shore and the world is ill with greed and will and enterprise of war but i will lay my burden in the cradle of your grace and the shining beaches of your love and the sea of your embrace this is my home, etc, etc... ... - ------ :) its great you are putting this together for you students. So this will be the last one for awhile. I've got to tell this little story though, then I'll stifle myself for a change. Promise. Bob wrote, re: Live 8 etiquette: You're spot on about Waters, I bet, Bob! This is true: Roger Waters performed a few years back at Bill Graham's beautiful Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California. South of SF a piece. I love the guy's music and performance art style of concert production. By hook or by crook, I had scored 2nd row tickets for the show. I'll try long-story-short: It was a freakin' transcendent rock show! Like none other I've seen, and believe you me, I've seen quite a few. Still trying to cut to the chase. Sorry. Here it comes... So, Waters and his band start into their white-hot, bass-heavy rendition of "The Wall." I came unglued in my chair, because I've always really dug that song, and I'm damn near in front row, mind you! I was ecstatic! And Waters is strutin' the stage, like some some proud rock-cock, thumpin' that bass with his thumb and fuck you finger, like it ain't nobody's business if he do! Then he came to that part of the song where the song's character rap-sings-yells about who he wants against the wall. In the middle of this section of the song, Roger Waters singles out some poor, innocent effeminate in the front row, points straight at him, from point blank range, and virtually screams into his handheld microphone: "There's a FAGGOT!! GET HIM AGAINST THE WALL!!! (and the colored girls chanted out in response: "Against...the...WALL!!!") And I guess that struck folks kinda funny, because I heard some laughing, and I guess I giggled a bit, too. I think they might've even shown the hapless chap on the stadium's huge "Jumbotron" video screen. Just then, I swear, Waters struts right over to exactly where I sat, points directly at me, and exclaims: "There's a NIGGER!!! GET *HIM* UP AGAINST THE WALL!!! (The women, again, dutifully, went: "Against...the...WALL!!!). Waters stood there for a pregnant pause, right in the middle of the song, awaiting my reaction, or so it seemed to me. First, I was stunned. And I'm sure my face showed it. Then, almost instantly...talk about proud! I don't think I've ever smiled more broadly and sincerely in my life! I stood up, applauded like a madman, and then I winked back at Waters. Happy Independence Day, everyone. Wherever and whosoever you are. Chances are somebody's trying to pin your ass right up against the WALL.
