Ah yes, "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte". Originally slated to be another pairing up of Bette Davis & Joan Crawford to cash in on the success of "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" But Crawford dropped out officially due to illness although there is some old dirt that circulated about Bette being pigsh*t mean to her during initial filming. Also rumors that Joan's drinking got the better of her. The movie also features Joseph Cotton, Agnes Moorehead (delightfully slovenly as Velma, Bette's cracker housekeeper) and Mary Astor as Jewel Mayhew. Some great old Hollywood stars in this campy 'grand guignol' flick from the 60s. This movie contains such classic lines as: Bette to Olivia: "What line of work did you say you were in? Public relations? Sounds like something pretty dirty to me!" Bette to Olivia: "You're a vile, sorry little BITCH!" Olivia to Bette: "I'm NEver going to SUFfer for YOU aGAIN!" And Bette has a scene on the staircase where she screeches and hops around like a crazed chimpanzee. Due for release on DVD in August. High-tone stuff! And loads of fun! I wish I could have seen the production you saw, Walt. My sisters and I wore the tape out when we were kids, laughing hysterically at "You're a vile sorry little bitch" line. I had that as a ringtone for a while...Olivia is great, but Crawford would have been a hoot as Miriam. There are some great stills of Davis and Crawford perched on tombstones in the cemetery. I have a great photo somewehere of Davis, DeHavilland, Robert Aldrich (the director) and others posing on the set around a coke machine that Davis had brought in after Crawford's departure. Joan of course, was the Pepsi queen...
