Hi everyone. I think the Turbulent Indigo songbook also had alt tunings. The few books with alt tunings were a huge influence on my own playing and writing style. I wish I knew where they got to in the blurry 70s and 80s... But Catherine is so correct about the jmdl guitar site. It is the best. Ok. Back to lurking. Over time, the tunings become so weird and out there, that I don't have a lot of patience trying to work them out. Wish I had a VG-8! I've got the "Taming the tiger" book, too, but don't remember if it has any alt tunings & couldn't be bothered going to look for it. P.S., Patti, I've got a bunch of your CDs and I love them. I arrived a little early and while she was out walking the dog I had to stay in to wait for the other guests. She had a guitar on a stand so I kept myself out of trouble by playing 'Stewart's Coat' by RLJ - the only song in standard that i like singing - after dinner and drinks the guitar was brought out. It seems this girl is a singer-songwriter and her friend played the guitar while she sang. It came out that I sang and played as well so they got me to play that. Then someone said, 'Does anyone know any Joni Mitchell?' I said yes.. can I detune this guitar? and we had a lovely evening of various Joni songs. Lhasa's Dad was Mexican and her mum American, but I believe her mother spent a lot of time in Mexico. They travelled around a lot. I think they had a whole bunch of kids and the father was a professor of Spanish or something like that. Lhasa was probably born en route to somewhere. She likely spent a lot of time in Mexico as well. Her partner, musically and I think romantically, is French-Canadian and I believe she now lives in Montreal. I think she has an amazing and haunting voice and the musical arrangements are kind of funky - a lot of very strange percussion that's hard to identify. One song on her first album, La Llorona (the song is "De caro a la pared") has a weird percussion that sounds to me like feet stepping through water. I will check out Erika Luckett, as you suggest. Joni? Hi gang, I didn't read this weeks (6/19-6/25) TV Guide until today since the cover story was Kelly Ripa saying "My body is so much better since I had kids", and every time I looked at it, I swooned in an avalanche of WHO GIVES A FLYING CRAP -- but then today I finally got past the cover and in a special article/listing of "Classic TV on DVD" I noticed one called "The Dick Cavett Show: Rock Icons" Joni isn't mentioned specifically in the short blurb in the Guide (Janis Joplin, Stevie Wonder and David Bowie are), but the shows date from 1969-1974, so surely the day-after-Woodstock show, and therefore notre Joni, must be on the first disk, no? Anyhoo, I didn't spot a distributer, but the release date is reported to be 8/2. Sorry if this is old news, and (this directed at jmdl newbies) if you're only interested in the show with Joni, it's available in various formats -- I have it on VHS myself (I think I taped it when it was finally reshown after 30+ years, on VH1 or some such), and I'm pretty sure other nice folks here have it on DVD -- ask, and one or another big-hearted jmdler will likely offer to make you one for cost, or nothin'. Hi, gang, I recently got in the mail a nice small sheet-music book of Donald Fagen (solo) pieces -- three from '82's Nightfly (The Goodbye Look, I.G.Y. and Green Flower Street), one from '93's Kamakiriad (Tomorrow's Girls) and one song I've never heard of or seen mentioned before -- and I couldn't find any mention of it at Steely Dan's "official" website -- it's dated 1981 and called "True Companion". Does anyone know anything about this song? Was it originally intended for Nightfly, was it a leftover from Gaucho (no, because then it would have Walter Becker's name on it too), was it (my guess) from the soundtrack of an obscure Movie (like the wonderful F.M.)? If I learned to Google like a grownup (sounds kinda oxymoronic, doesn't it?), would I not be forced to ask questions like these of my friends at jmdl? I can't imagine that Steely Dan has a list like us'ns as they would all be sour, withdrawn misanthropes... Just kidding, I love their music, and I'm a sweetie. Hi Walt - leave it to the music slut & Steely Dan-atic..."True Companion" was a song that Fagen contributed to the animated film "Heavy Metal" back in '81. It's a great song - I used to have that soundtrack on cassette, but alas it didn't hold up as was the case with most pre-recorded tapes. Oh, that many? Anyway, right after my previous posting, I did a better google search and found the following information regarding "True Companion", a Donald Fagen solo song that wasn't on Steely Dan's "official website": < Yesterday I got a record from Australia - a 45 by Erana > Clark (anyone downunder heard of her?). "Circle Game" was > actually the "A" side, so this would have been the 'hit' > side, but it was released in 1973 so it was a while ago. > Anyway, the shipper secured the record between two pieces > of a box from a six-pack of "Woodstock", whatever that is > - I assume some type of alcoholic beverage but I've not > heard of it. I can kind of answer this one ;o). Erana Clark is a Kiwi who relocated to Australia after a brief career as a singer here (one site called her a "child star", but I don't know how old she was - she appeared on several TV shows and apparently had a few hits), and went on to become a session singer in Sydney and is now the vocal coach on Australian Idol. Woodstock is a sickly-sweet RTD (ready-to-drink) bourbon and cola (note it's "cola" not Coke!). It's also available as a straight bourbon apparently, but I've only seen it in it's RTD form. Here's a link: http://www.independentliquor.co.nz/ibuilder.aspx?tabid=240 Does that help? I guess Kentucky is a kind of bourbon? I don't > know much about the hard stuff - I'm a King Cobra man > myself. Since I belong to a group of staunch bourbon, sorry, "Jim Beam" drinkers (although I tend to stick to beer myself, 'cos it's "safer" - I won't elaborate.....) I think I can also answer this question. As far as I know, bourbon cannot truly be called bourbon unless it's made in Kentucky (and only bourbon made in Kentucky is allowed to mention the state - so Woodstock MUST be made there). A bit like champagne can't be called champagne unless it comes from the Champagne region of France, otherwise it gets called "methode champenoise" (sp?). Numerous names exist for bourbon-like liquor, for example, sour mash whiskey (and as far as I'm concerned whisky isn't whisky unless it's single malt, like Glenmorangie or Glenfiddich). I think I'm heading into the realms of "too much information", so I'll stop!
