If you just burn the files straight from the Finder, you end up with a bunch of files on a disc. Just because it is a blank DVD doesn't mean it will play as a DVD. A blank DVD is just a 4.7Gb disc. No different, apart from size to a blank CD. If you put it into your DVD player or computer, nothing will happen. You need to encode the disc so that your DVD player will respond. Toast Titanium is the quickest and simplest way to create a DVD movie disc from existing DVD files. Remember, the files must be DVD files to start with. It won't create a DVD from, say, an mpeg file or an avi file. You must also have enough hard drive space for it too. You will need at least twice the amount of space that's on the DVD on your hard drive ie. 9.4Gb. Once you have Toast running, click on the DVD option on the left, then drop all the files on the main window. Don't forget to name the disc. Click "burn" and it will do the rest for you. You can also "verify" it after. Obviously you can buy Toast Titanium at many stores worldwide or online but if you're cheap and immoral like me, you can download it using a peer to peer file sharing program. I've found the best ones for Mac are acqlite and iSwipe. They are both free to download from the web. acqlite.org and hillmanminx.net If you haven't used P2P before, they are just simple search engines that search through everyone's hard drives who use the same program for the file(s) you specify. iSwipe is very thorough because it uses about 5 or 6 networks so, you can find just about anything. My preference is aqlite because it is simple to use and easier to keep track of although it only uses the Gnutella network. You are sure to find Toast Titanium on either. Make sure it is a Mac file by its tag; .sit, .dmg or sometimes .rar. Finally, don't forget to get the serial number for it too. Otherwise, you won't be able to install it. Use a search term like "toast sn" or something. The Joni Tree files fit snuggly onto a blank DVD although, there are no chapters. If you have time and are creative, you could re-edit it using various other software. I'm not IT trained and am far from an expert. This is just what I've learned from trial and error. This is the unraveling. Sigh. What happened was that I infiltrated the Young Republicans club at Texas Military Institute in order to commiserate with one Miss Lisa Harrison, whom I suspected of being a quite curvaceous Soviet Young KGB club double agent! Clearly, I had to, um, get to the, um, bottom of this! That's my story anyway, and I'm sticking to it. :-) Now to gloat over my SAN ANTONIO SPURS demolition of the sputtering pistons of old motown! Can you say "Ginobili" yet, Vince? Sure. I knew you could. Now say: "TIMMY!!!" As in Duncan. He'll be your MVP this series, please just let him know how you want your pistons served. Where's my little whisk broom for these pip-squeaks from the East? ;-) Van Morrison remains the man, by the way, ya'll. His performance in San Francisco tonight was one of the best I've seen from him in decades. And Kakki, our friend Shana Morrison, who we hung with in Bel Air that time, sorta, Van's daughter...well, she joined Dad for a heart-rending duet of "Sometimes You Cry." The band was great. Van played sax, guitar, harmonica and sang like the dynamo of Irish soul that he is. He slammed his mike stand with microphone still attached to the stage floor at one point, such was the passion with which he sang and emoted his "Burning Ground." Pretty jazzy set, all things considered. Band was comprised of an organist, pianist, sax, trumpet, drum, stand up electric bass. A whole mess of great musicians. These guys were tight. Then dinner at Brazenhead, Kakki. Two of Eddie's bloodies and an amazing pluot salad with feta cheese and the pork loin special in a semi-sweet wine sauce. Owner Eddie was all jazzed because his 8 year old girl had just performed the role of Artful Dodger in "Oliver." He was pleased as punch and everyone in the joint was in high spirits. It was as if everyone had been to the Van show or had seen a good playoff basketball game, or had fallen in love, or had some manner of humble good fortune this evening. At least I hope that's so. So now, God bless you, my dear jmdlers. All snug in your beds. Worked a treat! In general, I like songs to be sung with the original lyric (kd lang's liberty with A Case Of You really grates with me); a really good singer can usually ride over any sexual ambiguity that may arise, or even use it to add a layer of mystery or intrigue to a song, as with Sarah Jane Morris's version of Me & Mrs Jones. That said, a little tweak to make a song more gender-relevant for the performer isn't such a terrible thing. I wouldn't complain about Esther Philips's exquisite version of the Beatles' And I Love Her just because she makes it And I Love Him. And when Christine Collister sang Paul Carrack's song Always Better With You and changed "... the man in me" to "the woman in me" she also made it scan better! Nice enough that I might even consider paying the extra $$ to get one, if they had 'em here. We do have some speciality plates, but they're pretty lame and not much different from the regular ones, which are very boring - white with blue lettering. The only thing different about the "special" ones is they might have a firefighter's logo if you're a firefighter, or a Toronto Blue Jays logo if you're a fan (pfffft!!!) and that kind of thing. No special different colours or anything. I'm cheap and I wouldn't pay the extra unless it was something really spiffing. Even though I wouldn't mind making a living doing something I love to do and surviving off of it, I know in my heart that it's not the reason I am in music. My friend the playwright who is a little eccentric but has a good heart was struggling to get things done with the musical play I recently did about Roberta Flack. I did not take much of a salary, in fact I know I didn't because he needed whatever money we made to pay off the ensemble as some of them were yelling louder for their pay day than others. He also put on another event at Southeastern University a month later called Diva Night (I hate that word!) and it was a tribute to Billie Holiday, the late Phyllis Hyman, and Anita Baker. I filled in for someone who dropped out suddenly and sang, "God Bless the Child", "Betcha By Golly Wow" and "Just Because". I did it as a favor to my friend and through doing that, I hooked up with some tremendous musicians who are excited to work on my original compositions with me! So in my own way, I got paid!!!! (Smile) These guys are going to prove to be invaluable! I truly did it for the love of putting on a good performance. Kate, I so hope you are getting everything you want out of life musically and every other way!!!! You live in a beautiful state and in a beautiful area so that is a big plus! A dear friend of mine just moved to L.A. and is so happy there! She just lost her husband of over thirty years six months ago and so I am especially happy she is at peace there. I would like to live there one day too! NJC Good ones, Bob and Kate! I must admit, I get a certain tingle upon hearing the opening lines of Otis's "Try a Tenderness." "*Oh, she may be weary* / them young girls they do get wearied / wearing that same old fancy dress, yes, yes..." And it's Goose Flesh City whenever I hear Joni's hexagram of the Heavens slow six string guitar strum on "Amelia." So simple, yet so damn powerful emotionally. How does she do that? "Then there's the way she sets the melancholy mood, instantaneously, at the exposition of "Cold Blue Steel." I always follow her down, down, down that dark latter in my heart of hearts. Makes me feel her character's pain, she does. - -Julius - -----Original Message----- From: Bob Muller To: kate@katebennett.com; joni@smoe.org Sent: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 11:53:06 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Re: What gives you the chills? From the town of Snohomish, in fact. It seems a high school student in Snohomish had a t-shirt printed up with the words 'Sno Hos' on it. The kid wore it to school and got suspended. He said he hadn't intended to imply anything off-color by the shirt. 'Sno Hos' was meant to refer to students and sports teams at Snohomish High School. The suspension was ultimately lifted but I don't remember whether he was allowed to wear the shirt to school again or not. This made the local news in Seattle. Now you'll have to excuse me 'cause I just have to turn on Court TV & check out the latest in the 'Michael Jackson Verdict Watch!' Omigod! The fans are bored outside the courthouse and the jury has selected a foreman! And it's Otis again in another, singing "Looks like nothing's gonna change, everything still remains the same...I can't do what 10 people tell me to do, so I guess I'll remain the same"....a major chill. Then there's a little record called Court & Spark...one chill after another for me, starting with those opening chords. Which reminds me of an idea....you know that chat room we have on the jmdl site? Is anybody up for a listening party? We pick a time and a Joni CD, pop it in our cd drives, and listen and chat about it. I thought maybe that might be a cool thing. Thoughts?
