Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Rain" from the soundtrack of "The Last Emperor". That string quartet's sudden launch to a running-speed tempo gives me the goose bumps everytime. It is quite similar to Kronos Quartet's "Dinner Music For Hungry Cannibals". New York Voices' version of "Oh Lady Be Good" that sampled Ella Fitzgerald's legendary 1947 performance of that song. The rapid-fire scats of the quartet gave way to Ella's almost tinny-sounding version complete with the tinny sounds of big band sound, but when the members of the New York Voices wrapped their cooing vocals around Ella's voice with an almost God-like homage, chills chills chills galore are all over me. I love the album "Whales and Nightingales", on the front cover of which, Ms Collins is wearing a pair of very groovy boots, which I coveted at the time. I recently purchased the CD after wearing the vinyl pretty much out. Also it just seems too inconvenient anymore to hook up the turntable, so the CD is good. I believe I bought it new (not a used copy). So I think it *is* available. Time to update alot of my Baez stuff, I think. I didn't listen to it for years and years after "soaking" in it all through the 70's. And now its sounding REALLY good again. That was another thing I found SO cool about "The Life Aquatic" was when he was up in the balloon with that reporter and in the background is playing the "here's to you Nicola and Mark" chorus from Sacco And Vanzetti, sung by Baez! LOL! I was just FLOORED! Who would have thought to stick that in there??? and it didn't really relate to anything really...just an interesting "touch". :) Em - --- Catherine McKay wrote: > Em, thanks for the reminder. They created enough heat to freeze Alaska. But I DID love that he held the last note longer than she did and out diva-ed her! She was here a few weeks back and got blasted by the critics for her bad performance. Certainly lacked the excitement she created with Nessum Dorma a few years back on the Grammys. As for Hugh, seeing him in The Boy From Oz will always be a highlight for me. He was electrifying. Or did he change it to "Strange girl"? I don't remember. Which leads to my next point... I don't think it's necessary, or a good idea in most cases, to change the sex of the person you're singing. It's too distracting and in some cases, it just doesn't work without having to rewrite the whole song. I don't have a problem with men singing love songs about other men, or women about other women; or with people singing as if they were the other sex. It's kind of like acting. If the person is good at what they do, then you don't sit there thinking, "Hmm, weird. Here's a woman singing as if she were a man. I can't just listen the this song because I can't get over that..." You just realize what a great song it is and that human emotions are universal (if you're a human, that is, in whatever part of the universe.) It's an odd little movie, but well acted, with Holly Hunter, Danny DeVito (for once not chewing up the scenery) and Queen Latifah, who sings the version of Lush Life heard on the Dana Owens album, or one close to it. The movie is quirky, with fantasy sequences, but I liked it. It's Nicola and Bart(olomeo), though (Sacco and Vanzetti.) I've heard the English version by Baez, the French version by Georges Moustaki, and the music (beautiful music) is by Ennio Morricone who has written so much amazing film music. LOL - no, I pretty much looked exactly like I do now (but now with a few more lines on my face and pounds on my ____ ;-). I hate to say it but I think it was something about a similar spirit of sorts! That's cool - I liked her and thought she was a fun character - just didn't get into the music at the time. But we know now there was something deeper there. And I think RLJ really made a BIG mistake not scooping up your property! (I don't see how you can leave it). Joni. Um, I guess what I really mean is that I cannot see Judy singing some of Joni's more let's say directly "raw" and "earthy" lyrics or exhibiting some of Joni's underlying rage and anger that sometimes comes through on certain of her songs. See, even now I can't come right out and recite them but I think you get the gist. I do appreciate the insights brought up in this discussion. It brings forth in so many ways how Judy is not just someone with a beautiful voice that made some Joni Mitchell songs famous. You already know so much about her, but I don't know that generally she is known in too much depth. I used to just wallow in her music. Remember babysitting in the 60s and carefully rifling through the parents' album collections to see if she was there and putting her on the turntable. There are many songs of hers that I adore but her version of In My Life completely takes me out every time. "We've got Joni Mitchell, David French and Daniel MacIvor, who is arguably one of the fastest-rising stars," said Thomason. "So I'm really thrilled that we're showing three major Canadian talents." I think I get what you mean, Kakki, because I can't see Judy singing about steaming stains or peeing anacondas either. - --Smurf NPIMH: "Someday Soon" "The best music is essentially there to provide you something to face the world with." --Bruce Springsteen __________________________________ Discover Yahoo!
