I love almost all of Joni's songs but I too think there's something extra special about the piano songs too. There's an 18 minute piano driven piece called "Paprika Plains" on "Don Juan's Reckles Daughter". Except for "Song To A Seagull", I think most of the first 8 albums have a piano song or two. Without looking, I'd say "Clouds", "Ladies Of the Canyon", & "Blue" are rich in piano songs. There's a latter day piano miracle called "Chinese" Cafe" which starts off the "Wild Things Run Fast" album. Mr. Brown's talent was the prolific ability to create. In a career that spanned more than 50 years, he became a jazz giant, revered as a lyricist, songwriter, composer, singer and performer. Mr. Brown, 78, died of complications from a blood infection Sunday, May 29, in St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago. "He certainly was a genius," said Joe Segal, owner of the Jazz Showcase in Chicago and a longtime friend. "He was really a dramatist. He was more than a vocal artist because his shows were very easy and dramatic at the same time." Mr. Brown's father, a real estate agent and lawyer, set an example of helping others and emphasized showing pride in the community, especially the black community. Although his father helped others by finding housing, Mr. Brown saw music and songwriting as a way to enrich lives, said his son, Napoleon. At age 15, Mr. Brown made his professional debut on the national radio show "Secret City." He graduated from Englewood High School and attended classes at the University of Michigan and Lincoln University, a small college in Pennsylvania. He never finished his degree, instead concentrating on writing songs and musicals. "He found his niche early on in life," his son said. Mr. Brown released his first album, "Sin and Soul," in 1960 and received glorious reviews as an emerging jazz musician, said his daughter Maggie, who performed beside him for many years. "He enlivened the music," she said. "He painted pictures with his songs, poetry. He could really deliver a lyric." In the 1960s, Mr. Brown hosted "Jazz Scene U.S.A.," a television program broadcast from the West Coast that introduced jazz to a nationwide audience. As his success grew, writing musicals such as "Kicks and Company" and "Great Nitty Gritty," Mr. Brown remembered to reach back to the community. He worked with gang members, sometimes casting them in productions after discovering they could sing, his son said. Mr. Brown said, "I want people to be `hip,'" according to his son. "He said, `I want `hip' to stand for human improvement potential because every human has some potential within them.'" During his career, Mr. Brown wrote more than 1,000 songs, 125 of which were published, his son said. Despite the respect he received from the jazz community, his family never felt he received adequate acknowledgment from the recording industry. "He spoke very candidly about the situation in America in terms of racism and politics," his daughter said. "If you don't fit the mold in the industry, then they don't use you." Still, Mr. Brown continued to write and perform. A documentary about his life and a book of his poetry are scheduled to be released in the fall. His daughter said she enjoyed performing best with her father. "Sometimes things might have been helter-skelter, but things always came off very polished when you hit the stage. It was magical." Other survivors include his wife, Jean Pace Brown; three other daughters, Donna Kane, Iantha Casen and Africa; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services are pending. - ---------- jfrancisco@tribune.com OSCAR BROWN JR., 78 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 May 2005 12:49:47 -0400 From: vince Subject: deep throat njc from today's trib (and the identification makes sense) NEW YORK -- A former FBI official says he was the source called ``Deep Throat'' who leaked secrets about President Nixon's Watergate coverup to The Washington Post, Vanity Fair reported Tuesday. W. Mark Felt, 91, who was second-in-command at the FBI in the early 1970s, kept the secret even from his family until 2002, when he confided to a friend that he had been Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward' s source, the magazine said. ``I'm the guy they used to call Deep Throat,'' he told lawyer John D. O'Connor, the author of the Vanity Fair article, the magazine said in a press release. Felt was initially adamant about remaining silent on the subject, thinking disclosures about his past somehow dishonorable. ``I don't think (being Deep Throat) was anything to be proud of,'' Felt indicated to his son, Mark Jr., at one point, according to the article. ``You (should) not leak information to anyone.'' Felt is a retiree living in Santa Rosa, Calif., with his daughter, Joan, the magazine said. He could not immediately be reached for comment by The Associated Press. The Washington Post had no immediate comment. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 May 2005 09:54:16 -0700 From: "Mark Scott" Subject: Re: Piano Dominated Albums > Except for "Song To A Seagull", I think most of the first 8 albums have > a piano song or two. Wow, it seems like just yesterday when our little child, the Joni Covers project, was in its infancy, and Volumes 7 and 8 were coming out. Now we're already at 65, but this old-timer has no thoughts of retiring, nope he's still very much kicking even though he can start drawing Social Security! Anyway, here's what's on this month's edition, all rounded up by me, myself & I: 1. Mike Ragogna - Medley: Some Kind Of Wonderful/Night Ride Home: Carole King meets Joni in a nice lite jazz/pop reading of these two great songs. 2. Matt Flinders - Both Sides Now: I think Matt is from Australia...this is pretty much run-of-the-mill lounge BSN. 3. Volker Niehusmann & Christiane Weber - For Free 4. Volker Niehusmann & Christiane Weber - Conversation 5. Volker Niehusmann & Christiane Weber - The Circle Game: Last Volume introduced you to this dynamic German duo - this month features another triple play of LOTC covers, all very pretty and some nice original guitar & vocal work too. 6. The John Cameron Orchestra - Both Sides Now: Instrumental - sounds like there's a group of recorders/song flutes carrying the melodic line, nothing too fabulous but certainly pleasant enough. 7. Rose Mary Rees - Chelsea Morning (Purple Mix): This is the flip side of the 12" Dance record from last volume - not a whole lot different, still there for you to get your groove on with. 8. Wally Whyton - Big Yellow Taxi: We originally heard from Wally a long time ago with his version of Urge For Going. This one features a Jim Croce-ish guitar. Whyton was a fixture in early British folk, getting his start with the skiffle band The Vipers. 9. Ken Hamilton - The Circle Game: Very soft & tender voice/guitar folk indie version. 10. Joe Cantada - Both Sides Now: As I understand it, Joe was a Filipino boxing/sports announcer who sang on the side. He's got a good voice, like a Robert Goulet sorta. 11. Robert Mosci - River: New York singer/pianist Robert Mosci turns in a very lovely cover, features a nice accenting soprano sax ala Wayne Shorter. 12. Voce - Big Yellow Taxi: All-male acapella version....shoooo, bop bop bop. 13. Susan Jansen - The Circle Game: I can't tell if this one sounds more like corny country or kiddie show style; in any event I find it annoying with really annoying backing vocals. 14. Steve Situm - Both Sides Now: Why does he start with "Flows and flows of angel hair"? It's amazing how many different variations there are on that intro, from "swirls and curls" (Leonard Nimoy) to "Oors & Ploors" (Kathryn Grayson) and everything else as well. Anyway, Steve's voice has that Mel Torme velvet fog quality that sounds OK. 15. Steve Situm - Michael From Mountains - The same guy, so he sounds the same, as far as I can tell he sings all the right words on this one. 16. Patrick McGinley & Family Style - Big Yellow Taxi: This one's got a real country feel to it, but I don't know where the Family Style is as this is just a guy and his guitar - some nice guitar though. 17. Gary Shum & Carl Occhipinti - The Circle Game: Duo with guitar, some nice harmonies. 18. Alice Babs - Both Sides Now: Hey, Swedish jazz singer Alice Babs recorded her first songs before Joni was even born! Here she is 30 years later singing the franchise in a concert setting. 19. Debra Blaquiere - Michael From Mountains: Sydney Australia is home to this jazz vocalist, who turns in a simple but pretty piano-accompanied take on one of Joni's earlier songs. 20. George Kahn - Woodstock: Saving the best for last, we close out Volume 65 in grand style with this 2004 recording. George plays the piano and leads a very talented group of musicians through this cover with some great solos. The track is a terrific 6 minutes, you can hear about a third of it here: http://cdbaby.com/cd/gkahn5 And that wraps it up for Volume 65 - 20 more slices of Joni covers, proof that our project isn't just getting older, it's getting better!
