Speaking of Jaco, some of the patients at the clinic where I work are musicians and they are all rapt in Jaco's performance on S&L. One of them had the DVD and they were all dying to watch it but it was a region 1 DVD and were so disappointed when they couldn't play it. Thanks so much for the time and effort. And I actually recall her saying most of what you transcribed so beee-utifully (sic) below. And as I recall, the part where she talks about starting to smoke *filterless* cigarettes at the tender age of nine-years-old induced a collective gasp from this heart-healthy Northern California crowd. That's when she wound up adding "sorry," I think. Geez, I was even a little stunned by that admission, and I know the old girl pretty well, at least so I thought. And I smoke, a little bit. Well, more than a little lately, to be honest. But with regard to my idol, Roberta Joan, does she have a beautiful mind, or what? The way the imagery flows from even her most casual recollection. For instance, I could take this bit she spoke and fashion a whole screenplay or short story from it, or most certainly a song, if I was so inclined: "As a child in a small town, the kids where I grew up were pretty brutal and Jen used to chase the dog on the sidewalk with their father's wood hatchet." So could you. But I sure wish Joan was still doing fresh music discs, because to this day, nobody's done it better. Alright, now break out the photos, Kakk! OK, he's getting on a bit, but he has that avuncular walrus thang going on. For Graham Nash, I'm thinking Hugh Grant (if he can do the Manchester accent). Jaco would have to be Steve Buscemi. Larry I'm struggling with, any suggestion? What about James Taylor? It would have to be a very beautiful man with a lot of charisma and preferably some musical talent: Viggo Mortensen? I think of the actresses who have been mentioned so far, the ones who have some small resemblance to Joni are Deborah Kara Unger and Mariel Hemingway. It may be sacriligious to suggest it (I think someone already has), but Jewel might also be a good choice, in that, firstly, she knows one end of a guitar from the other, and secondly, she can actually act, as anyone who has seen Ride With The Devil will know. Someone at work on Monday sent around a link to the weather page which featured nine upcoming days' worth of weather predictions, and each day had a little gray cloud-with-rain icon next to it. This may not be such a big deal to you all, but where else could I share this "Joni on my car radio" story? These unexpected out-of-the-BLUE Joni moments are so sublime! Driving in to work, listening to our college station WHUS FM (HUS is short for Huskies, by the way), I perked up when I heard the DJ say "Joni Mitchell". Uh oh!!! State of arousal, quarter in my Wurlitzer! He went on to say that everyone should want to hear her music from "a million gazzillion years ago". (Huh?) Whatever. Then the Miles of Aisles version of "Circle Game" came on, with all the happy banter that precedes it. ("CAREY!!!!"......"Play what you want!""""......."Alrrrrrrighhhhhhhht!".........."Paint a starry night again man" with Joni's lilting laugh.) (Don't you LOVE that laugh?) So now guess who is smiling and singing out loud while travelling in some vehicle in Morning UConn Town? Make my day! And I'm thinking of Laura and her dad singing this at her son's graduation, how really lovely that must have been... After the song was over, he said he was dedicating it to his son who just turned 25, and that he can't possibly be old enough to have a 25-year-old son. I had to pull over to call "SteepleJack" (the DJ's moniker) on my cell phone. One ringy dingy. Two ringy dingys. Three ringy dingys. Damn! He's not going to answer! Then.... SJ: Hello? PP: Hey, SteepleJack! Thank you for playing my Joni this morning! SJ: YOUR Joni? PP: Yes. I'm a huge fan. Joni Mitchell is a goddess. SJ: Yeah, she is good, isn't she? PP: She is amazing. I am the biggest Joni fan on this campus. SJ: Are you really? PP: Yes. I have what my friends call JMOCD. You know what OCD is, right? SJ: Yes I do. (laughs) So what is Joni doing these days? Can you get her to stop smoking? PP: (Sigh) No, unfortunately. Right now she is writing her autobiography. And she is not performing these days because, as she said: "I sing my sorrow and I paint my joy." You see, she found her long lost daughter a few years ago -- she had given her up for adoption at birth -- and now she is just painting her joy. SJ: Wow, I didn't know that. PP: Yep. And if you ever want to know more about Joni, go to jmdl.com and everything you need to know is there. Or you can just call me. (laughs) SJ: What's the website again? PP: jmdl.com. Joni Mitchell discussion list. SJ: Oh, cool. So where do you work on campus? PP: In the language department. SJ: Which one? PP: Modern and Classical Languages -- all of 'em but English. SJ: Oh, so you teach those dead languages and everything? PP: All languages! SJ: So what's your pet peeve? (I guess that was the theme of the day, but I didn't know that.) PP: Ummm, I don't know. On campus you mean? SJ: Yeah. You must have one. Your boss or something? PP: Oh, no!!!!! I LOOOOOVE my boss. My only peeve is that he is LEAVING! SJ: Well, I'd say that's a pretty big peeve! Where is he going? PP: To California. SJ: So what's your name? PP: Patti. Do you still work in UConn Connects? (that's a volunteer program we both work in, mentoring students who are on academic probation). SJ: Yes. So that's where I know you from! (we went on to discuss some our of students and how to help them) PP: Well, happy b/day to your son. I know how you feel. My son just turned 26. SJ: Yep. We are not old enough to have kids so old. Well, thanks for calling Patti. Good talkin' to ya! I raced into the office with a breathless "sorry I'm late guys but Joni Mitchell was on the radio so I had to pull over and listen and call WHUS where is the radio Mary can you put on WHUS on the radio hurry hurry hurry" and everyone is just smiling and shaking their heads. Phew! Thank God Mary is quick and knows how to respond in these types of emergencies. In seconds she finds WHUS and then we are all listening to Bob Dylan and Van Morrison and then this: SJ: I just got an interesting call from someone named Patti, who is a big Joni Mitchell fan. In fact, she is a COMPULSIVE Joni Mitchell fan; says she has JMOCD. (laughs) You know Joni Mitchell, the one who wrote "Woodstock". VAL: OH!!!!! So THAT'S who wrote "Woodstock". I was biking throught Woodstock CT the other day and I stopped at the Vanilla Bean Cafe and that song was on and I was trying to remember who wrote it. I was thinking "Joan Baez? Judy Collins? So THAT'S who wrote it! Joni Mitchell!" (sheesh, this chick needs some educayshun!!!) SJ: I'd say YOU'RE a little OCD with your biking. (they went on to talk about biking, and my thoughts turned to our Maggie) (but don't talk about BIKING! talk about JONI!) SJ: Well, back to Patti and her JMOCD....I played Joni Mitchell's "Circle Game" for my son, she said she has a son who just turned 26 so we were lamenting our age together. But here are some of my belated thoughts on the topic. Below I have listed those buddhist writers that have introduced me to Buddhism. I particularly like the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh. His book "The heart of the Buddha's Teaching" I can highly recommend as a thorough introduction to the core teachings of Buddhism. I like his gentle nature and his emphasis on compassionate kindness. He has lots of book on various other topics such as anger; death and dying; love; etc... They are all outstanding. http://www.iamhome.org/tnh.htm Two great books that have left a deep impression are by Pema Chodron: "When things fall apart" and "Places that scare you". I also like to travel with her little book "Comfortable with uncertainty". Cheri Huber as I mentioned in another message is also a wonderful Buddhist teacher and a trained psychotherapist. She is extremely funny, intelligent and direct. Not a lot of Buddhist lingo to work your way through. She also has program that is aired on http://www.worldtalkradio.com/show.asp?sid=162 She has lots of insightful books and offers email classes occasionally which are VERY insightful. Shambala Sun is a good magazine that is not terribly expensive and features lots of different writers on different subjects. It's funny because now in SC and in the world of the far-right he's being labelled a traitor for sidin' with them dadburn lib'ruls. Anyway, we're certainly not out of the woods, and the judges that made it in as a result of the compromise are mighty nasty, but like Todd Rundgren says "give us just one victory and we're on our way". The result of the compromise is that the one appointee was confirmed today in the Senate. The House vote indicates that some Republicans are wandering away from the fold. But the actions are independent of each other. Sorry. One good deed does not erase a lifetime's record. Nor will it ever make up for his actions when he was in the House. His record is dismal. It was good he finally did one good deed; I didn't think he had it in him. I think someone is looking to run for higher office as a Republican John Edwards. Again, sorry. I gotta call it as I see it, and I have watched this ________ since he first entered the House. I'm tickled pink at my latest procurement: a mint copy of the Official 1997 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Dinner program. You know the story, Joni is inducted and honored, but she chooses not to attend. Nash presents her with the award months later, out of a paper sack? Read all about it in the JMDL articles archives, I'm sure, if you want to brush up. Upon very close inspection, I'm pleased to find that they did a very nice job on the design in Joan's section of the program. The entire publication is quite well done, actually. Also inducted that year were: The Bee Gees, Buffalo Springfield, CSN, the Jackson 5, Parliament Funkadelic, the Young Rascals, Mahalia Jackson, Bill Monroe and Sydney Nathan. Wow! Heavy-hitters all! All treated with the utmost respect in their respective sections, in terms of attention to detail, photo selection, art design and the like. Splendid collectible, if you can get it. There's a long bio piece on Joan by a Patricia Romanowski, which is well worth sharing, but it's prohibitively long. I got a major kick out of this sidebar by Chrissie Hynde about Joni though. Chrissie gets it said!: Joni Mitchell by Chrissie Hynde Authenticity is the quality I think best describes Joni Mitchell. The fact that she has the most gorgeous voice ever, plays the guitar like a man (figuratively speaking of course) and is a master songwriter, all come secondary to the authenticity that (like blood through an Ace bandge) seeps through everything she does. Many women in the last twenty years have played Joni Mitchell records during childbirth. I believe it's some kind of phenomenon. Why do they do it? Probably because people appreciate the truth more than ever when going through major life events. We have total faith in this woman. She's never fucked us around or tried to get our attention to serve her own means. In fact, we get the impression that she finds fame more than a bit bothersome and would rather be left alone to go off and paint pictures. Still, millions of us wait for her. We want her authenticity to lend credence to our own lives. She makes us feel better, and if you think about it, who doesn't love Joni Mitchell? Nobody I know. - -End- - -Julius ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 May 2005 18:36:16 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: A little good news njc I don't disagree with you on Graham's record, and of course he's smarmy (he's a politician, ain't he?) - I was just glad to see him break away from the lockstep this time - it was encouraging. You can hold a lifelong grudge against whomever you like, doesn't matter to me. My point really was that it was nice to see something politically positive coming from SC, not to lavish praise on Graham. Coincidentally, my Greenville buddy who was cousin to The Brains' Tom Gray was also Graham's college roommate.
