Emeka Okafor has been a tremendous ambassador for UConn -- graduated in an unheard of 3 years w/ honors (3.8 GPA), and he is an all-around nice guy, not to mention absolutely GORGEOUS. He led us to our second national championship in 2004 along with "Gentle Ben" Gordon, another class act. And Vince, your Pistons have our Richard ("Rip") Hamilton. You will do well! I think he's the only UConn alum with both an NCAA *and* an NBA championship ring. He led us to our first-ever national championship against the much-hated Dookies (DUCK FUKE!). I'll never forget it -- our OWN shining hour. I brought a big poster of a tombstone to the parade that said: - ------------------------------------ R.I.P. Roy Williams will have a challenging year in recruiting competent new players. By the way, one source of joy for our department in UNC is whenever a group of prospective students and their parents are toured in campus, the studentguides always stop in front of Saunders Hall -- where our department is housed -- and they tell students and parents that in all UNC campuses statewide, the Department of Geography of UNC-Chapel Hill has the highest income/salary of all because of Michael Jordan. That piece of info while already tired for this tired ears never fails to elicit smiles from people hearing that for the first time. Actually, SCJoniGuy's NC State took us down this year, and Mrs. SCJoniGuy's and Joseph's UNC won the whole shebang, and we're still talking, so there would be no hard feelings. I don't like it when they leave early. I know the money is irresistable, but what can be more fun than playing college basketball? Several of them live in my building and the stadium is maybe 3 blocks away. I went to the pre-clinch game Saturday night. And since Joni has referred to hockey, I thought maybe you'd all want to salute the Fury! Vince FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Muskegon Fury captured the United Hockey League's most coveted prize for the second straight year with a 4-2 victory over the Fort Wayne Komets on Sunday night. Within minutes of the final horn, the word "dynasty" came up and Fury coach Todd Nelson was more than willing to speak on that very subject. "Dynasties are few and far between," said Nelson as he watched his team celebrate on the ice at Fort Wayne's Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. "If this isn't one, it would be pretty close to it." Advertisement When the final horn sounded and the Fury players streamed onto the ice to mob goaltender Sylvain Daigle, it marked the second straight year, the third in four years and the fourth time in seven years the Fury had captured the UHL's playoff championship. "Three cups in the last four years is pretty good," said Brant Blackned in an intentional understatement. The winger was presented the Most Valuable Player trophy for his efforts during this playoff run. "Hats off to the organization, year in and year out we're right there." The title makes Muskegon the winningest team in UHL history. Since the league's inception in 1991, no other team has won four cups. While Sunday's victory was played in enemy territory, several hundred Fury fans followed the team to Indiana for the series-clinching game. "The fans in Muskegon have always been very supportive," Nelson said. "People come down here to support us. It's a great hockey town." The hometown fans will get their chance to celebrate twice this week. Tonight, the team's road jerseys will be auctioned off as part of the live Fury Hotline radio show at Racquets Downtown Grille, West Western Avenue and Fourth Street. A community celebration is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at L.C. Walker Arena. The post-game celebration, which began on the ice, filtered into the team dressing rooms, into the corridor outside the dressing room and back at the hotel, where dozens of Fury fans gathered waiting for the team bus to arrive. Players' families and friends came from far away to get in on the festivities. The celebration continued into the wee hours of the morning today as some players celebrated their first title ever and several others celebrated what could be their last. Fury veterans Scott Hollis and Robin Bouchard both indicated Sunday's championship could have marked their last games with the Fury. "Yes, probably," said Hollis when asked if he'd just played in his last game. "It's unbelievable winning the last two years. I can't think of a better way to end it." Bouchard said his long, successful career with the Fury may also be over. He said he would talk it over with his family before making a final decision, but "there is a good chance it was my last game." For Bouchard, it was his fifth Colonial Cup title; four with Muskegon and one with Flint. Next on the Fury's agenda? Talk has already begun about a "three-peat." "Now they're going to say, 'what have you done lately' and expect another one next year," said Nelson. ) 2005 Muskegon Chronicle.
