I tend to want to define "profound," in our context, as "characterized by intensity of feeling or quality." Hi Julius, Yes, definitions are important. I was thinking of profound as "deep." And deep to me means complex or heavy I guess. So, I thought I'd hit the other end of the spectrum with least profound meaning superficial or simple, more just fun-loving or silly, light-hearted... not intensity of feeling or quality in my definition although I see how profound can mean that too. There can be lots of feeling in some very superficial phrases in songs, and some very good quality superficial phrases. Want to play? Yes, we agree... but we've got to be on the same page definition-wise or there's no connection. Got it now with you Julius. Smile! At last someone in the USA has seen "The Sea Inside"! (It had to be you, wonder Joseph!) Belen Rueda... I'm not really sure, but I think that is her first appearance in a movie. She's very well known here in Spain for a role in some very popular tv sitcom (or two, I don't know), so when Amenabar choose her for her role in Mar Adentro the expectation and curiosity about what would her playing be was very high... of course the reactions were very positive. Julio Medem is, without any doubt, my favourite spanish filmaker (along with Amenabar, yes, and Fernando Leon de Aranoa is very good, too); I must confess that I didn't like too much his "Vacas/Cows", though, but with The Red Squirrel he really captivated me, only to increase my enthusiasm with new each film from him. To me, The Lovers of the Polar circle is one of my all-time faves... I thought, I desired it was a very uplifting film... if not for his tragic end. You should watch Lucia & Sex: I confess I like films with explicit sex (just like some french movies, you know ;-) when they're interpersed with such amount of imagination and lyrism. As for Bigas Luna: The Tit and the Moon is a (bizarre) masterpiece: he really hooked me in with this (I kept singing Les Mots D'Amour for months after seeing it)... and Jamon Jamon is good too, but in my opinion he's (like Robert Altman, for instance) someone who really can't do two good films in a row: I mean: he's capable of doing very boring (or at least unsuccessful) films just after doing one great work. I'm also a fan of his La Camarera del Titanic (The Chambermaid of the Titanic) although it seems this is not a very personal work for him. Do you know Borau? if you get the chance to see Leo (with Iciar Bollain) don't miss it. Nino Nadie is also a good example of his outstanding senior activity. As for Almodovar... he's very reputated here, indeed, but he's not at all the only one (despite his attitude). Yes I think that Talk to Her was undervaluated here, but The Bad Education... don't get me started on this. Now I think: possibly the real critical acclaim for Almodovar came with the New York's reaction to The Law of Desire: that's the one I think it will survive. Ah! I've not watched yet Talk to Me (I looove Jaoui) nor Palyndromes (Solondz? I guess I won't pay for it... maybe when it shows in cable tv), but I'll keep your recomendations! Have a Wonderful time! Emiliano PS: I think I'm going to watch Lucia and Sex again... tomorrow NP: Iain Matthews: Tiger Will Survive ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 May 2005 18:31:36 -0400 From: jrmco1@aol.com Subject: Re: least profound Joni verse, njc I mis-keyed: >Fact is, I'm not glad to discuss this, or any issue, with you, Laura, and this list, obviously. Bryan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 May 2005 22:40:55 +0000 From: "Patti Parlette" Subject: njc, all this talk about films and synchronicity Dear Joni Comrades/JMOCD Enablers: Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest, but all the rich exchanges on this list the past few days have my heart and mind swirling. I have so many Joniemails in my head that I don't know where to begin! Okay, deep breath. I will begin with films. I'm wondering if Joni's admission that she is a "frustrated film-maker" has led everyone to all this talk about films recently. Now you all have added to the list of films I must see, but I think I'll put Lost in Translation at the top of my list. (And, of course, Carl Jung's "Memories, Dreams, Reflections" is now at the top of my reading list.). Also, I should sign up for some of my own department's film courses, so I can learn more and appreciate more. And Joseph in NC is so good with film stuff, maybe I should invite him up to UConn to teach a film course for us someday? Sigh....so much to do when life is for learning and you want to belong to the living and you want to renew yourself, again and again! Life is our cause, and when I think of all I still have to learn, my mind see-saws. And now some amazing personal synchronicity.....sitting on my groceries an hour ago, I had the urge for: Julie Child's braised Belgian endive. Okay. So I got them in the oven, and then realized those 7 little roots would shrink into nothing, so I decided to add some Brussel sprouts (remember our thread a while ago about rutabagas and brussel sprouts and all those earthy vegetables? lol.....). Okay, are you still with me? If you've got no good reception for me, then just tune me out. I have all these great JMDL posts swirling in my heart and my mind (BOTH sides now: those I just read, and those I want to write -- I want to welcome Oddmund strange strange boy back, and thank Jim Lamadoo for his kindness), I'm thinking about films and Joni's love of synchronistic events, I'm thinking that I really love Bill Murray (I'm with Catherine -- he's like the bad little kid in school who wants attention. Just seeing his face has always cracked me up, plus I think he's pretty hot which I really can't explain just yet -- I dunno, "when you're hot, you're hot!"), I'm cooking Belgian vegetables, and then I decide to sit down and read the news, hoping it's not all bad. Maybe reading the news will help me get me out of this JMOCD/sychronicity/"it all comes down to Joni" thing for a while. NOT! The first headline story I read is "Belgian Film 'The Child' Takes Top Prize at Cannes. (Uh oh! Films.....Belgian....France, where they kiss on Main Street....). Calm down, Patti! Deep breaths. Keep reading......it will go away. "Receiving the second-place grand prize was U.S. director Jim Jarmusch's "Broken Flowers," a droll drama starring * BILL MURRAY * (oh, for laughing and crying out loud!!!)....Jarmusch said, "I would really like to accept this on behalf of all the filmmakers who follow their heart and make films in their own vision..." (like our frustrated filmmakerJoan has always done with her art, with her heart on her lonely painter sleeve, you know?). Now, that leads me to continuted JMOCD/free association/synchronicity here: when Joni finally releases her autobiography, will she make it into a film? Can you imagine???? Can we be extras? YES, in a concert hall!!!!! A Joni tribute to beat all Joni tributes! Wooo hooooo!!! Who will be the 16 JMDL gentlemen to escort her to this hall? Do we use Julius's original list? (Hi, honey!) But who could POSSIBLY play Our Lady SIQUOMB? Would the JMDL lunatic fringe come out in droves and costumes, like the Star Wars fans? Okay, loves, I'm going to have to pull the plug on this whirling Wurlitzer brain and try to do my Sunday crossword puzzle. (But gee....I wish I were in Canada -- O Canada! -- where they have Joni clues in their puzzles! lol....) Enjoy the rest of this Sunday and keep Papa's faith in people! Laughing it all away, Patti, twisted, up in my Joni-ized computer room, with the aroma of roasting Belgian vegetables letting me be crazy P.S. Is anyone on this list from Belgium? My inner child just came out to wonder about that.... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 May 2005 19:43:20 -0400 From: jrmco1@aol.com Subject: Re: buddhism NJC I don't know if it's literally "buddhism," but one of my all-time spiritual favorites is: The Prophet, by Kahlil Gibran. I suppose that if you're talking about the core of a planet or moon, it is a legitimate term but it doesn't make a lot of sense in the context of Carey.
