It is an amazing hour of insights into music, the citizen in the world, global responsibilities, and so much more. I have heard it twice and just very high;y recommend that anyone with any concerns for the world check it out. http://www.commonwealthclub.org/archive/index.html The Joni content is that her recent visit with the Commonwealth Club has not been broadcast to my knowledge or archived but we can all keep checking. But do, please do, take the opportunity to listen to Chuck D. I heard it on Saturday morning on my local western Michigan NPR station, and got really lucky and heard it again on Chicago's WBEZ on Sunday coming home from a quick trip to Chicago. It is one of the most insightful conversations that I have ever had the opportunity to hear. Those in the music biz will find his comments on the industry most interesting. Beyond that, he speaks of the role that each individual of this country has in a global community, and he speaks with the most rare insights, I feel blessed to have heard this. Life is for learning more and more about Joni! I saw some of those lyrics in the database, and I PARTICULARLY love these: "Now is the wrong time But maybe if a dozen days are warm and right You'll hear him say "I've wanted you baby for such a long time" God, doesn't that just perfectly capture "what a wonderful world it would be" if your unrequited love someday came out w/ THOSE lines? (Has anyone here ever suffered from unrequited love? Huh????) Talk about a Dreamland! Joni just nails it once again. And Em, I gotta tell you, babe, how much you crack me up! The way you said: "Let's not do that" (when I jokingly threatened to "blow my freakin' brains out" on your small white bed)....... I had a picture in my mind of a trouble child (in kindergarten, maybe) with a kind and wise and experienced teacher. Maybe the kid is throwing a tantrum or pencils or something and the teacher gently takes his/her hand and says: "Let's not do that, okay?" Never lose your free-stylin' spontaneous wit...you stand out like a ruby on this list! Joyful Julius -&-Joni-in-the-elevator-type hugs to all, Patti, in Morning UConn Town, wondering how I will find Boopsie today. Maybe she'll pop in singing Chelsea Morning, huh Bree? Date: Sun, 15 May 2005 22:59:20 -0400 From: Gary Z Subject: Re: fruits and cheeses Hi Patti, Interestingly, I believe that "grapes and cheeses" was part of Joni's original lyrics to "Conversation" also called "He Comes For Conversation" and she sings them on a version of the song contained on "The Second Fret" CD. It's a very early rendition, and also includes a great third and final verse, which was omitted from the version on "Ladies of the Canyon." Even a line of these lyrics taken from the JMDL pages, don't match exactly what she sings on the disc. In parentheses (on one line) are the lyrics she sings on the "Second Fret" CD: (As sung at the 2nd fret on Oct 12, 1967:) He's acted down all evening Maybe it's over now Maybe she's finally leaving I'd like to show her now But friends are friends forever So hard to change their role Laugh with him, cry together A friend feels so old (Hey friend, it feels so whole) But you keep your feelings deep inside You talk of them and think of pride Now is the wrong time But maybe if a dozen days are warm and right You'll hear him say "I've wanted you baby for such a long time" So here are even more lyrics for you to explore and have fun with! I enjoy your posts!! According to recent stories in the tabloids, this book says that Joni is now celibate because she will never find a lover as good as James Taylor. Well, there's nothing mentioned to that effect in the rather pedestrian entry on Joni. I'm wondering whether Joni made some casual remarks to the editor, Nancy Alspaugh, and she used them for her own publicity purposes. Not very nice, IMO, although Joni should know by now not to make casual remarks to journalists. Weird coincidence: in the same book, I came upon a picture of a woman I went to high school with! At the Handlebar, they either have seats on the sides (if they anticipate folks standing up) or full rows of sets from front to back (for shows like Cassandra Wilson, Dan Hicks, Joan Baez, etc). If everyone's seated, it really doesn't matter and I'll usually go for the 5th or 6th row back. I saw Scott Miller & The Commonwealth Saturday night (he rocked!) and I sat for the first half of the show but ended up standing along with everyone else because otherwise all you're looking at is other folks' butts and the backs of their heads.
