Hi Mark, yeah I always sensed an underlying hipness as well - altho I can't abide her singing ( tho I respect it). ONe day in the mid 80's I was house-sitting for a friend and was in the bathtub with the windows open (2nd floor) and I became aware of some very very faint music somewhere far away. The only part I could even hear at all were these very high loud parts and I strained and I strained to hear...and finally I realized "thats Barbra Streisand". seemed funy at the time..because I still wasn;t sure..but then when I got out and went downstairs, someone was indeed playing an album of hers. Anyway, we saw "Meet the Fockers" the other day, and even tho the flick itself was "questionable but fun" I really adored her in it. I thought she looked great. And her aging hippy-mama character was right up my alley - like a Lady of the Canyon - only down in Miami. It was a silly flick, but I liked her in it alot. I feel she fared better than Dustin Hoffman did. Although maybe its because his role was so much more difficult? not sure... :) Em ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 May 2005 11:11:11 -0500 From: "mack watson-bush" Subject: Re: Babs/ was swingin' chicks of the 60s njc Em wrote: I feel she fared > better than Dustin Hoffman did. She shone as she usually does and that kind of take is exactly what she says happens in Hollywood and in the world. Dustin Hoffman? Can take him or leave him and find most of his acting pretty predictable these days. Barbra? Like buttah, to borrow a phrase. There's none so pathetic as those who rigidly hold to their stubborn views. People have the right to change their minds, and so they should, if they realize there's a better way. It's too bad so many, including most of our politicians, are afraid to say, "I'm sorry. I made a mistake. There may be a better way to do this." And why do you feel Em that his role was much > more > difficult? HI Mack, I'm thinking it's just maybe that he *made* it difficult. Dustin Hoffman, over his career, has lent dignity to many many different characters - some you'd think would be categorically devoid of dignity. And in this movie, he didn't (I feel) imbue his character with dignity of any kind. His character just came off as frenetic and frantic. Whereas even in times when he's played characters in sometimes frantic situations (thinking Tootsie) the character maintained a grounded dignity or grace, despite the circumstances. But, to be honest, I should watch it again. Maybe it was there and I just missed it. I've always loved Dustin Hoffman. Anyway, hope you are enjoying your warm Texas afternoon. Kramer" Dustin Hoffman would deliberately not follow the things they rehearsed so much so that it unnerved her to see him doing something else other than what was originally planned/rehearsed. She thought that he was trying to throw her off since she has not established herself as an actress. But I do like Hoffman's screen roles esp. in Sidney Lumet's "Family Business" and was also great in "Wag the Dog" and "I Heart Huckabees". As for that Fockers movies, I like his role more than Streisand's esp. when you see the outtakes from the movie, where he deadpans and did a lot of really funny things off-screen. Barbra Streisand was a subversive force in the music scene of the early 1960s. The way she chooses non-traditional tempi and unconventional album covers are great but her singing was something not heard of in a long while. I have I think her first five albums and still consider them exemplars on good singing (however subjective), but I just dont dig her later stuff. As one music critic once said, she is like a rich old relative who is a snob and who comes to Christmas dinners to bitch around. While I dont buy that stuff I really think her early albums are just flat-out great but then I never own any of her later albums but heard them on the radio, or in someone's house, or being written about in magazines. Like Hoffman, I respect her but I don't find them likeable. But that's just my highly-personal subjectivity.
