Heehee, boy, when I first read it I thought "oh is this one ever going to get people talking and start a controversy." I have to think the people who put it together are really clever - suck you in because of the list aspect and the seemingly shallow methodology that is ripe for argument, but ultimately getting a point of view out there that one really cannot fault. Kind of different fare than one usually expects from the mainstream media. I give them 20 gold points for a very unique and creative approach! ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 May 2005 12:50:34 +0000 From: "Sherelle Smith" Subject: RE: OREGON IN CHICAGO, with a bit of Fred (njc) Hi Fred! Apologies for the brazen self-promotion, but I hope you'll join me in welcoming that venerable and merry band of musicians, OREGON, featuring Ralph Towner, Paul McCandless, Glen Moore, and Mark Walker. OREGON has been serving up profoundly beautiful, and beautifully profound, music for well over 30 years, and their occasional visits are events not to be missed. As I did last year, I will again have the honor and joy of serving as appetizer for their sumptuous main course, and will hopefully be joined on a few tunes by various Oregonian friends. Also, it's likely that there will be copies of my recent album, Remember the River, which features Paul McCandless and Steve Rodby, available for sale at the gig. Come on down and dig on up. Okay, loves, I think this is my best ever "Joni in the Workplace" story. I hope you enjoy it. I'm thinking you will! The other day one of our Ph.D. students was in my office chatting, when all of a sudden, out of the BLUE, she said: "That's Joni Mitchell." I said: "Huh?" She pointed to my computer and said: "Your screen saver. Those are Joni Mitchell paintings!" (Uh oh! A quarter is going in the Wurlitzer!! Hold her down, boys! Full-blown JMOCD attack coming on!) Hearbeat quickening, eyes full of discernment, I said: "Do you like Joni Mitchell?" She looked deep into my eyes, into my heart, into my mind, into my soul, and said very seriously: "I LOOOOOOOOVE Joni Mitchell." I gave her the same look and after a moment I said: "Get out of here! Are you SERIOUS???" (I'm thinking: "Now don't you be playing with me, girl!") (Sherelle, does this remind you of the time you met that keyboardist? And everyone else, you have had these magic moments, too, I know! Shared Joni-love is instant touching souls!) Suki and I went on the share the most wonderful Joni memories (that's her real name, she said it's okay to use it -- I don't need to protect HER identity as I do w/ my other co-worker, the infamous Joni-basher Boopsie). I told her about the jmdl, the concerts I've seen, the time I shook her hand (I'll tell you about that some other time...). Background: Suki is a transplanted NYC person (she mentioned John Kelly's Joni impersonation, and has written dance reviews for the NYT), a beautiful tiny dancer who is getting her Ph.D in Comparative Literary and Cultural Studies. She taught a film course for us this semester. I have always liked her and admired her, but now, of course, we have that special Joni bond. She came for conversation, and this is how the rest of it went. Suki said: "When I got married in 1997, we walked down the aisle to Joni's "Love"." You all know the lyrics, of course, but here they are again (God, I LOVE that lyrics database!!! Who do I thank for that? Les? Merci mille fois!) Although I speak in tongues Of men and angels I'm just sounding brass And tinkling cymbals without love Love suffers long Love is kind! Enduring all things Love has no evil in mind If I had the gift of prophecy And all the knowledge And the faith to move the mountains Even if I understood all of the mysteries If I didn't have love I'd be nothing Love never looks for love Love's not puffed up Or envious Or touchy Because it rejoices in the truth Not in iniquity Love sees like a child sees As a child I spoke as a child I thought and I understood as a child But when I became a woman I put away childish things And began to see through a glass darkly Where as a child I saw it face to face Now I only know it in part Fractions in me Of faith and hope and love And of these great three Love's the greatest beauty Love Love Love Then she told me that she and her husband went to the Joni Tribute at the HammersteinTheater in NYC (in the year 2000?). She said she went up to Joni in the balcony at intermission (Suki is not shy!)....said she just HAD to talk to her. She told Joni how they had "Love" play as they walked down the aisle, and how she especially loved the lines "Love has no evil in mind." Joni smiled and replied, through puffs of smoke: "That's a lonnnng, harrrd road to walk." Suki said Joni was very friendly and gracious. After the show, Suki said she said just HAD to see her one more time. She went right up on stage. She said Joni's bodyguards or whoever those guys were were trying to get her off stage. I quipped: "You mean 16 gentlemen?" and Suki smiled, knowingly, and said "God, you DO love Joni!". Suki said to Joni: "I have one more thing to tell you." She said Joni was open and gracious, listening, shooing off the bodyguards. Suki told her: "I saw you at Woodstock in 1998. At that time, I was struggling to finish a ballet I was writing. You conveyed this creative power as a woman over the footlights and it gave me the strength to go back to the studio and finish my ballet the next morning." Suki said Joni gave her a big, compassionate hug. "It was like she totally "got it". She understood the creative solidarity, and understood that she had inspired another artist." Joni as mentor..... Isn't that awesome? I am so thrilled to have a REAL Joni fan now in my workplace. Not just Osvaldo, who says Joni is a goddess, and Stuart, who went along w/ me on the phone as I pretended I was Joni, but someone who has actually interacted with, and been HUGGED by, Notre Joan. After she left, I went in to tell David, my department head. I said, bright as a neon light: "GUESS WHAT??!!!! Suki is Joni fan!!" David just shook his head and smiled. I hope our next department head is as tolerant of my JMOCD. I'd hate to have to look for another job...I love it where I am. Later I asked Suki for permission to post her story. She nodded, and I said: "Love is a story told, it's second hand..." and she looked confused. I said: "That's from Ladies of the Canyon" and she laughed and said, "Sheesh, I can't keep up with YOU!" Maybe someday Suki will join us, but probably not right away....she's writing her dissertation (Hi Suki! I hope this was accurate. Bonne courage et bon weekend! Come back for more conversation in Humanities 228 and I will comfort you through the dissertation process). I also told her she should hook up w/ Ashara, since they are both dancers. Another grand story, Patti - keep them coming. The part about her getting a hug from Joni at the '98 show brought a little water to the eye. Well, they did cover Laura Nyro, so it's not so far out. It is far out to have them doing Ludwig though...nobody's taken that one on yet; matter of fact FTR is grossly underrepresented in the covers dept., perhaps because it has such a personal feel to so much of it. If you've ever heard The Supremes' cover of "All I Want" it sounds a lot like "Up Up & Away" by the 5th Dimension (at least at the very start of it). None of the members of 5D ever recorded a Joni cover, but they did lots of Jimmy Webb material, and Joni worked with Jimmy on some of his records, so there's a pretty strong connection there just the same. (I'm down to 311 now.) Technically I would say the beginning of Audrey Hepburn's stardom was the 50s. 'Roman Holiday' was 1953 and that was the movie that put her over the top. That being said, I would still definitely classify her as a 'swingin' chick of the 60s'. The movies 'Breakfast at Tiffanies' and 'Charade' will prove my point. Nobody looked better in the clothes than she did, not Joni, not Twiggy, not Shrimpton - nobody. And she had a kind of sophisticated innocence, stylish and elegant but completely unassuming and unaffected that effortlessly wore the style of the decade but somehow seemed to clearly reveal a genuineness and depth underneath the sometimes flashy, plastic 60s look. For me, anyway, Audrey is a big part of 60s culture. And speaking of 'Breakfast at Tiffanies', I remember seeing Truman Capote on talk shows during the 60s and I would have no problem classifying hims as a 'swingin' chick of the 60s'. Remember his Black and White Balls? (don't go there, Smurf) I also have to defend Babs' inclusion in the list. I don't think she was so mainstream when she first hit the scene in the early 60s. She was unique and there really weren't any singers that were singing quite the way she did or looked the way she did back then. Her look, her sound - very hip in her own way, imo. This bit about the Black & White Ball that follows is from << http://www.newsday.com/other/special/ny-ihny0605story.htmlstory >>: 1966: Truman Capote Hosts "Black and White Ball" Truman Capotes Black and White Ball was easily the social event of the year. The gala, held in the Grand Ballroom of Manhattans Plaza Hotel on November 18th, 1966, was modeled after the Ascot scene in the musical and movie, "My Fair Lady." Capotes 540 guests were among the wealthiest and most powerful individuals from the realms of politics, publishing, and the arts: from Andy Warhol, Frank Sinatra and Mia Farrow, and Norman Mailer to William F. Buckley, Jr., Tennessee Williams, and assorted Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and Rothschilds. Invitees to what was dubbed "the Party of the Century" were required to wear black and white evening clothes and masks, and women had to carry fans. Capote was fond of saying he invited 500 friends and made 15,000 enemies. Cynthia Blair Welcome back, Mark. Have a fun-filled weekend, everybody. - --Smurf "Who do you think you are...
