Those gorgeous words, as so often with Joni, always struck me as impressionistic, their very sound and intonation another facet of the music. Van Morrison is another who used words (the past tense is completely witting) as painterly sounds, to different if often mesmeric effect. "Painting in Words and Music" always was a nifty title. Is it different? Subtly, yes. The orchestra is mellowed out and pushed back just a bit. Some string notes have been extended. I think some of the piano track may have been re-recorded with a different instrument in a different studio and the new pieces sound a little brittle. To my ear, the vocal has gained some reverb. Is it better? That depends on whether you had a problem with it in the first place. Personally, I will take some time to see how the piece has been effected overall and that will need at least 5 listens. I will report here the most interesting and obvious change (you can even hear the punch-in): the dropping of Joni's first vocal statement, "I've got to get some air." After the event Darice, Julius and I were standing around and the young kid usher with the braces came up and tapped Julius to come with him. I said to Darice "oh oh this is IT." Awhile later Julius reappeared by our side slightly hyperventilating with a huge smile and tears streaming down his face. He was in complete euphoric meltdown! I heard Julius's recount of the encounter several more times throughout that night (I understand how it is when it's your first time meeting Joni ;-) I'm so glad Julius invited me up for the event and also took me all around the city and wine country during my stay. It was fantastic. Thank you SO much Julius for everything. It was great to get together with Darice and sweet to see Rich again and to hear of his own Joni encounter. It was also cool to see some of the S.F. luminaries in the crowd. The event was recorded and we are hoping that the Commonwealth Club will have it up on their web site sometime soon. Here is the links for those who may want to check up on it. http://www.commonwealthclub.org/archive/index.html and http://www.kqed.org/index.jsp?flash=true I brought an old digital recorder that didn't work too well but did manage to capture the second half. When I have more time, I may transcribe a bit of my favorite parts here. Joni had her hair up in a tight chignon with curly bangs framing her face. She looked like a bit like a Gibson Girl from the early 1900s - very Edwardian era. She spoke about the medicine wheel, the weaknesses of "western thought," read the letter from Chief Seattle (and did qualify that some think it is fictitious) and told the story of bringing Iron Eyes Cody home from the Indian artifacts show to record on Lakota. She spoke of many other subjects, including her thoughts toward the music industry (very negative as can be expected) and a few delightful reminiscences of childhood experiences with the natural places of beauty around Saskatchewan (my favorite part). She also mentioned a couple times about the countdown clocks at the Hard Rock Cafe in L.A. that count how many trees are being cut down and how many people are being born. The audience was given cards on which to write questions for her. Only a few got asked. Julius wrote a question asking where the lost tapes of her and Jimi Hendrix were - LOL - unfortunately, that one was not answered. Deb asked about the old Mexican restaurant in L.A. where her friend heard that Joni hangs out. The only one I can think of is Lucy's Cantina on Melrose across from Paramount Studios. This is where nearly every musician from the 60s and 70s hung out (Lucy fed a lot of them for free when their money was short). There are tons of notes and photos from everyone on the walls. It was the place Linda Ronstadt and former Governor Jerry Brown used to hold court when they were dating. Jimmy Webb also immortalized it in the song that Linda recorded - "Adios." "Ran away from home when I was seventeen ,to be with you on the California coast, drinking margaritas all night in the old cantina, out on the California coast." Lucy's is a landmark worth visting. Yeah, "SONGS OF A PRAIRIE GIRL" is (are?) playing right now in Covington, Kentucky. New addition to the lexicon: "Songs of a Prairie Girl" = SoaPG New knowledge: the key to spelling "prairie": it contains the word "air". Paprika Plains is unchanged to everyone except perfectionists (Mingus), audiophiles (Simon, RR, Steve P., Em, & me) and scholars. Since everyone HERE is a scholar, I'll continue. According to my transcription of PP in the DJRD (LP/CD) versions, Joni sang, >Liquid soap and grass >and jungle gardenia crash on Pine-Sol (R) and beer. >It's stifling in here. >Gotta get some air. >'m goin' outside to get some air. In the remix, Joni Mitchell said, >Liquid soap and grass >and jungle gardenia crash on Pine-Sol (R) and beer. >It's stifling in here. >------------------------- >'m goin' outside to get some air. I think she wiped in some silence because none of it sounds like an alternate vocal track. Is that worth $15? Hell yes / hell no depending on how much you like PP and Bernstein's photos. There are a couple of other differences but they're even smaller. If you play PP at full volume, some piano parts sound like they were recorded with the lid up, then suddenly the lid is down, then it's up again. I can't say that I recognized pitch changes because (as anyone who's heard me sing knows), I have lousy pitch. The remix of "Paprika Plains" is credited to Al Schmitt; he gave us clearer piano parts than the pre-HDCD CD I'm familiar with. On the LP and the original CD, PP starts much quieter than the previous track. It had to be because there's a HUGE jump in volume when "the band plugs in again". Mr.. Schmitt's remix is much more subtle, like a normal CD. It lacks the Floydian, bombastic effect. Personally, I like Floydian, bombastic effects but I'm not second guessing. PP is more of an ensemble piece now and less of a tour-de-force from Jaco. I think the bass was truer on the promo LP. I'd say there's nothing below 60 Hertz anywhere. Mr.. Schmitt definitely spent some time on Guerin's cymbals; Wayne's solo is clearer now. Except for less bombast and Jaco, it's more of everything. Note to duplicators: Don't buy this disc! Played on a CD-ROM at work, "River" had many pops. It plays *perfectly at home* on the SACD player / external digital-to-analog converter. I've read that pops are due to minute flaws introduced by the manufacturer. CD players can read right through them but CD-ROMs make pops. No one should copy "catalog" anyway, right gang? "Come In From the Cold" is the edited, single version. The biggest surprise was "Let the Wind Carry Me". When I played SoaPG for the first time, (without looking at the track list), it was a jolt because it's lifted very, very cleanly out of context. It sounds like a stand-alone piano song. At the end, the piano just decays naturally to silence; that is studio magic because in the context of the 2 track master for FTR, it segues into the next track, a blistering number called "When the Levee Breaks". (No?) As Em mentioned recently, there are some places in the original CD issue of "FTR" where the sound shreds up. That's markedly improved on the SoaPG version. I guess credit for this probably goes to one of the giants of remastering, Bernie Grundman. Sincerely, Jim np: Joan (the cat) is napping while Joni sings "Paprika Plains" From: Bob Muller [mailto:scjoniguy@yahoo.com] Jim, it's TOMORROW (04/26) - new releases always come out on TUESDAYS. From what I understand the remix objective was not to "re-tune" the piano but rather to bring the piano up in the mix and de-emphasize the orchestra. I'll be interested to hear it, but not curious enough to buy it when it comes out. They didn't trim anything out of the running time, it's still 16 minutes plus. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Apr 2005 17:25:48 -0400 From: "Lama, Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: SIQUOMB in San Francisco YOU A LYING ASS, TOO, JULIUS. Since it's Tuesday, the day of new CD releases, I went over to Newbury Comics in Government Center, Boston, to check out "Songs of a Prairie Girl." Let me say that "SoaPG" is a beautiful package, perhaps my favorite Joni cover ever, featuring that gorgeous photograph of Joni skating away in a grey and white winter scene. The songs that were selected are a pretty good sampler for the uninitiated, in my opinion. There were about 5 copies for sale in the store's "just released today" section, and no copies in Joni's bin in the rock and pop area. (I didn't inspect the back room, interrogate the employees, or request to see bills of lading, however.) But a new release by Bruce Springsteen caught my eye, and that's what I spent my $10.99 on. ("SoaPG" was $16.99, by the way.) I chose Bruce because his CD contained new material. Since I am an incompletist, I don't regret not buying "SoaPG." Lord knows I have given Joni more time and attention than any other artist this world has ever seen. Besides, I already own all the songs on the CD, and many of them I've bought as vinyl, then as cassettes, and then as CDs. What I am really hoping is that she does the jazz combo thing she has recently talked about doing. Then I will skip jury duty or whatever else is going on the Tuesday it's released and savor new Joni. And the new Bruce? It's very nice, although there's some dirty talk and the F word gets used. (I blame Eminem for the ubiquity of naughty lyrics in modern music, and I'd really like to spank his nasty little bum for it!) Longtime JMDLers will be interested to hear that Bruce sings about schtuping someone named Rosie, but whether or not that's Rose from Joisey is Bruce's little secret. - --Smurf Tired of spam? Yahoo! I wouldn;t know the diff in the mix of PP, not having familiarized myself with it yet, even on DJRD. Does the "new" album, SOAPG, have anything from FTR on it? Interesting that none of the other NPR stations that I listen to, WUOM, WMUK, WBLV, or WBEZ has ever carried the Commonwealth Club to my knowledge and only since I loved here have I heard of it, but it is now a valuable hour in my weekly radio listening. The speaker speaks, then there are questions and answers, always very interesting.
