Since no one else has mentioned this, I figured I would pop in with this wonderful news. "Connecticut, in a historic step last week, became the first state to approve marriage-like civil unions for same-sex couples without the prodding of a court order." (David Crary, Associated Press). YAY!!!!! YAY FOR GAYS!!! Who says we're the land of steady habits? Three cheers for C O N N E C T I C U T ! However, "As in any civil rights movement,it's often three steps forward and two steps back," said Joe Solmonese of the Human Rights Campaign, the largest national gay-rights group. "Sometimes, we have all of that movement in the context of one week." He is referring to the the Texas House voting to bar gays from being foster parents (gee, what a surprise, eh?), and Washington state's 25-24 rejection of a gay rights bill. So close! That one particularly saddens me personally, because I have two dear friends at a university in Washington state who are on visas, and they could conceivably have to separate when S's visa expires. (V. is a professor and is getting a green card, but S. is not a professor.) I hope that never happens -- they are the most loving couple I ever met. Celebrate the progress where we find it, and keep on keepin' on, Joni brothers and sisters....we'll get back to that garden yet! Love and peace and human rights for all, Patti, eagerly awaiting more Joni reports from SF! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Apr 2005 13:02:55 -0400 From: "Lama, Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Combo for Joni I'd like to see Robert Sadin produce, because he got some great "takes" from Joni on Herbie Hancock's disc, "Gershwin's World". Piano: Herbie Hancock Bass: Ira Coleman (also on "Gershwin's World") Drums: Brian Blade Jim np: "The Man I Love" on the afore-mentioned album. Wayne Shorter is on this track; he plays an honest to goodness solo. When Joni produces, she gives him only enough room for tiny, 4 note phrases, between lyrics. I think we hear more interesting stuff from him when he has some room. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Apr 2005 10:10:29 -0700 From: "Mark or Travis" Subject: Re: njc, human rights in connecticut Patti Parlette wrote: Washington state's 25-24 rejection > of a gay rights bill. There is a lot of anger directed at Microsoft. They had supported this bill in the past but when it finally came up for vote in the legislature, they did nothing. A local evangelical minister is claiming to have successfully exerted pressure by threatening a boycott campaign against Microsoft. Microsoft, of course, denies bowing to pressure of any kind and says that they chose to focus on legislation that more directly affects their business. A California gay rights group is asking that an award given to Microsoft be returned. I'm sure there are many of Microsoft's employees who are not happy and I have heard some rumblings about a boycott amongst gays and those who are sypathetic. I hope your friends can both stay here. Many people just don't seem to realize how difficult it is for many gays. I don't like to get into criticism of anybody's religious beliefs, but it doesn't look like the new Pope is going to do anything to help us out and as long as religious institutions, particularly institutions as large and widespread as the Catholic Church, are maintaining that this basic, fundamental part of our lives is a sin, progress in gaining basic civil rights (right to marry and all that goes with that) is going to be nearly impossible. It's very discouraging. On a happier note, I'm flying to London this evening! I'm pumped! I'll be gone til May 11th and probably no internet access. I'm hoping to meet up with some of our British friends while in Merry Old England. Please don't talk about me when I'm gone.....(unless it's absolutely scandalous gossip!) The main reason to switch guitars would probably be that you're looking for a different sound, since all guitars sound different from each other, some radically. Same goes for amplifiers. So probably he just wanted a different sound, but maybe the playing style on these songs was easier for him on a smaller instrument. I don't know what he's playing, if electric, it could be a 3/4 scale. Lennon's Ric in the early Beatles was a 3/4 scale. If acoustic, in the old days, Martin made "parlor guitars" that were small, also tenor guitars with 4 strings. They now make one they call the "Backpacker" that is thin, small and light, and has a very dulcimer-like sound. And of course, there are still 3/4 scale acoustics, often a young person's first instrument. Then there are all manner of lutes, bazukis, chinese banjos, charangos made out of armadillo shell, little African stick-string things, mandolins.. None of these are guitars, but cousins anyway. The other catagory would be the traveler guitars that basically have their ends cut of, to fit into overhead compartments and such-these are usually electric, and a great way for a guitarist to take along an ax. "That's part of getting along with our friends and neighbours, who may have different ideas about everything from fashion to art, politics to regliion. We believe it's healthy to have an exchange of opinions, and we believe diversity makes our country richer. "We also believe it's important to maintain the core values and beliefs that support families as the cornerstone o society. That's why we're worried about the effect same-sex marriage would have on families and the world our daughter grows up in. "There's a time for debate, but there's a point when you have to take a stand for what you believe. If you believe that marriage is between a man and a woman, let your Member of Parliament know. It's crucila that we all speak now." "If you believe marriage is between a man and a woman, please contact your MP now. To find out how, go to: www.marriagematter.ca focusonthefamily canada" Canada may be having another election shortly because the current Liberal government has a minority and is in a wee bit o' trouble over the sponsorship issue. Conservative (or whatever they're calling themselves these days) leader Stephen Harper (a very scary person, IMO) is calling for blood and an election (not necessarily in that order) and is rabidly against the gay marriage issue, and so groups like Focus on the Family are ramping up to make this THE issue. My belief, and hope, is that most Canadians may be so pissed off at the prospect of another election being forced so closely on the heels of the last one, that they will NOT vote for the Conservatives for forcing the issue, no matter how pissed off they may be at the Liberals for the sponsorship biz. It's kind of a choice between the devil and the deep blue sea. In any case, we may also be in for a bit of a bumpy ride and it's bringing out the intolerant right, who like to paint themselves as tolerant. "I'm tolerant, but..." "I'm not racist, but..." "I don't mind people that are different from me, but..."
